Who am I?

Hello! My name is Allison Hartman (pictured in middle) and I
currently work as a Data Scientist at 84.51°. My grandfather taught
mathematics for over 3 decades, and it was during his weekend lessons
with me I developed a deep interest in the subject. My further
exploration of math through my undergrad studies and various internships
made me realize I could have a very fulfilling career in data
science/analytics. I am excited to be working in such a dynamic field
for which I feel I was made.
Academic Background
I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama
(“Roll Tide!”), and am now pursuing my Master’s in Business Analytics at
the University of Cincinnati.
- B.S. in Computer Science (University of Alabama,
Tuscaloosa, AL)
- B.S. in Mathematics (University of Alabama,
Tuscaloosa, AL)
- Concentration in Mathematical Statistics
- Minor in General Business
- (In Progress) M.S. in Business Analytics
(University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH)
Professional Background
Prior to working for 84.51°, I completed three internships.
- Lockheed Martin - Huntsville, AL
- During my time at Lockheed, I obtained both Interim Secret and
Secret level federal security clearances. It made me feel like I was a
secret agent as we were then allowed to work in the CLASSIFIED areas! I
primarily worked as a software developer, updating software installation
scripts for Linux compatibility and performing operating system
reconfiguration.
- Vanguard - Malvern, PA
- This internship was very special to me as it was during this time
that I realized I wanted to work in data science. Similarly to my
position at Lockheed, I functioned as a software developer and primarily
worked to enhance backend data processing functionality of various
applications and programs. This was enjoyable work, but I consistently
found myself listening to the data scientists talk about their work and
wishing I was with them. Vanguard’s team of data scientists was small,
so I ventured off the following summer in search of a company whose
overall mission was data science - 84.51°!
- 84.51° - Fully Remote!
- I enjoyed my internship with 84.51° so much and was excited to come
back full time. Even though we were fully remote in the summer of 2020,
I still felt the incredible culture and excitement of our work and
projects flow through. I worked on the former SCIE team to build the
first iteration of what is now one of our most foundational segmentation
packages!
Experience with R and other analytic software
Prior to this class, I had only toyed around with R to get to know
the language. I had not built any personal projects or used it in any
prior professional environment.
I have, however, used Python a fair amount and am familiar with
Jupyter notebooks. I have become much more knowledgeable with PySpark,
the Databricks/Azure environments, and Power BI since I joined
84.51°.
Life, Family, and Hobbies
I currently live in Cincinnati, but I grew up outside of St. Louis
and my immediate family now resides north of Kansas City. I have also
lived in Tuscaloosa, AL, Huntsville, AL and Villanova, PA.
I have two twin sisters (pictured on right) by whom I am constantly
amazed, and I am grateful to be able to call myself their big sister. We
all do very different things: Megan (left in picture) is studying
Nursing with hopes of future work in the NICU, and Taylor (right in
picture) is studying Dance and Advertising.
In my free time, I enjoy playing card games, reading (mostly
fiction), eating out at restaurants with friends, traveling to new
places, and practicing piano.
