Introduction

In the United States, there are a vast amount of people who speak a language other than English at home. According to the Census Bureau report, there has been a significant increase from people that speak another language at home other than English. A huge difference is seen from 23.1 million people in 1980, up to 67.8 million people in 2019.

Being able to speak more than one language, if it is at home, or even out in public, is a huge benefit for many people. The number of people in the United States who use more than one language is growing. Nowadays, being multilingual has advantages.

English Language Knowledge in Counties of New Jersey

In this data set, the data shown shows the counties of the state of New Jersey, and the estimate of how many adults English at home. It might be that certain counties have only a few amount of people that either speak english, or even only know a certain amount of English. It can be seen that the highest counties with the more percentage are the one’s that are mostly in areas with more diversity, such as Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, Union, Hudson counties. The difference might be due to the fact that each county is in a part of the state. This difference may be looked into as the state of New Jersey being divided by either North or South. Depending on the location of each county, may just be the reason why people have a different knowledge of the English language, due to their surrounding areas.

In the state of New Jersey, there are over 150 spoken languages. Among them, there is a certain amount of estimates of how many languages are spoken. In the graph above, it shows a rough estimate of how many languages are spoken in the different counties in New Jersey. As English is one of the main languages spoken, it can be quite interesting to learn that with the surrounding areas such as New York City, and Philadelphia, there can be a huge difference on the amount of languages spoken in a certain area, or in this case, a county. Since New Jersey is densly populated, it creates newer opportunities for other languages to make its way into a person’s way of communicating with others around them.

Proficiency of Spoken English Language

Being able to speak, write, and even read in English, may be a huge accomplishment for people. In this case, as a spoken language at home, there are a couple of differences in a person’s proficiency. In this graph, it is shown the levels of proficiency that a person has of English. It varies from speaking English well, less than well, and whether a person speaks only English, and even only Spanish at home.

The main reason why this difference in proficiency may have to do with a difference in background. Some people may have different opportunities such as being able to go to educational classes, or even have the ability to speak the same language with the people around them. Others may start learning a language from a young age, and that gives them an advantage of learning English, and changing the levels of fluency of how you speak the language. This “native-like” performance is how one is judged on what your language proficiency is. It all comes to show how much a person is capable to speak a language, and be understood.

In Conclusion, it is shown that there is a huge difference on how many people throughout the state have a certain knowledege of the English language. Not only is English a well spoken language, but this data set shows that there are well more than one language spoken at home other than English. We are able to see a huge jump from English, to German. It seems that the most spoken language at home, other than English, must be German, and close to that, is French. Many immigrant people who migrate from Europe, or even Latin America carry on their native language with them. Even after all of the many years, languages still manage to survive long enough to be taught and learned by many people around the world. Even if it is not spoken at home, any language can be learned through communication and teaching. It is important to make sure that language is a huge part of our communication system. Without language, the development of societies and even cultures would be severely impacted as we know it.
