Avengers Assemble
Marvel & DC Gross Revenue
Marvel is a well known movie franchise beloved by all geeks and nerds alike. Many fans have flocked to movie theaters to witness the grandeur that is marvel movies. But even when movies flourish in opening sales, do they continue to accrue more movie sales than other movies made by the DC franchise? My question that I am solving is do movies created by Marvel make more and rate higher than DC movies.
I will answer these question by creating visualizations for sales data and rotten tomato ratings for marvel & DC movies. I will use a data set pulled from IMDB containing a list of movies and their revenue.
Success of Marvel
These show that on multiple websites Marvel ends up being the most enjoyed franchise. They gather higher rating scores on both IMDB and Meta. Even though this data is insightful, most of the movie-watchers online would agree that Marvel always reigns supreme. Now that we know this, let’s dive into some specific Marvel questions. There are many people who believe over time Marvel movies have gotten worse. Marvel has over four phases, each one creating new universes and collabs within the marvel cinematic universe. So the real question is, did Marvel really get worse in the eye of the public over time? Did they lose money after changing some of their content and characters?
For both categories, audience score and world-wide box office sales, it is clear that with every new phase, there is more revenue and higher ratings. However, when it comes to phase four, it seems to be taking a dive in box office sales. One reason why I think this trend is important is that according to the data base, Infinity War: Endgame was one of the last movies within the phase two. This was one of the most popular movie, as it included every mcu character in the end battle seen. It pulled in major sales and allowed for some fans to be excited moving into phase three. But there was major backlash moving into phase three as fans felt marvels movies and shows were much weaker than the previous phases, explaining a big drop in phase four.
Choose Your Side
Anybody who loves marvel has heard the age old question. Captain America or Iron Man? This question is not just brought up by fans but also throughout the comics and movies such as Captain America: Civil War. So today I intend to answer this question through analysis of fan reviews. I plan to scrap the reviews of the official IMDB website for both movies. I am choosing to review the second movie of each characters franchise due to both second movies being considered the best character movies among the marvel fandom.
Character Analysis
When it comes to Captain America, he is associated with the emotions of joy, trust, and positive-ness. Which aligned with the general on-screen prowess of his movie character. When it pertains to the actual wording of online reviews, he seems to be known for “helping” which adds to his emotions scores being trusting and positive. In fact, other than his name, Captain America, the most used word within his reviews is “helpful.”
When it comes to Iron Man, he is also associated with positive feelings and trust, but had a higher negative word score. Iron man is often sarcastic which can blur the lines between something being funny but also mean at the same time. His actions within movies can sometimes be seen as morally gray, where he is doing the right thing but being a bad person while doing so. This could result in both his positive and negative scores being so high.
Something I also found interesting is that Captain America’s name was only used within a positive connection; meanwhile, Tony Stark’s name is equally positive and negative. This could make sense as his dry humor is only loved by a select amount of people, which can add to people using his name in a positive and negative way.
Overall, Both of these characters are loved by millions of fans throughout the world, and the question about their popularity will continue to be discussed. And as the marvel cinematic universe expands more characters will be brought into this discussion.
