Assignment 7 P2
Sentiment Analysis - The Hunger Games Movies
In this analysis, I will be looking at The Hunger Games Movies user reviews on IMDb. The two movies I will be comparing in particular in this analysis is the first movie “The Hunger Games” and the recently released prequel movie “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.” I am very interested to see people’s opinions on these movies because the book and the movie was released much later after the original trilogy of The Hunger Games was released.
Question #1:
The first question I am interested in answering is related to the positivity and negativity of each movie’s reviews and how they compare to one another.
In order to achieve this, I am going to use bing for a simple word analysis to create a barplot for positive and negative words for each movie.
Question #1 Interpretation:
From the barplot, it looks like “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” reviews have a much more negative reoccurring words compared to The Hunger Games. The most reoccurring negative word is ‘bad’ in “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” and the most reoccurring positive word is pretty, which is probably used to describe (someone could have used this for “pretty bad/good”). The most reoccurring negative word is ‘kill’ and ‘death’ in “The Hunger games” which does not necessarily mean it is a negative review. The movies are about people killing each other in a game so it is probably mentioned in reviews. The most reoccurring positive word in “The Hunger Games” is ‘lead’, ‘easy’, and ‘amazing’. The reviews may think that the lead (Jennifer Lawrence) and the movie are pretty amazing.
Question #2:
Next I am curious to see how the movie watching reviewers feel about the both of the movies by testing their sentiment score by using the NRC lexicon.
`summarise()` has grouped output by 'sentiment'. You can override using the
`.groups` argument.
Question #2 Interpretation:
This bar chart shows the distribution of emotional sentiment scores in the New and Original Hunger Games movies. The bars are the amount of emotive words found in the movies. Overall, “The Hunger Games” has more reviews with emotional sentiment. This includes positive and negative reviews.
Question #3:
Next, I am curious to see how the view’s sentiment scores changed overtime right after the movies were released. Because the movies were released in different years I am creating two different graphs to show the reviews solely in the year that the movies were released. In order to achieve this, I am going to use bing for a simple word analysis to find the positivity scores in that year.
Joining with `by = join_by(word)`
`summarise()` has grouped output by 'book_name', 'day'. You can override using
the `.groups` argument.

Question #3 Interpretation:
“The Hunger Games” came out on March 23, 2012. As you can see from “The Hunger Games” graph, it looks like the positivity score was wither very positive or very negative initially when the movie came out. After a few months the reviews seem to be more neutral.
“The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” came out on November 17, 2023. As you can see from the “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” graph, it looks like the positivity score has fluctuated (it has only been a month since the movie came out). The variability of positivity score is not as high as the “The Hunger Games”. This leads me to think that “The Hunger Games” was more controversial when it first came out and possibly more popular.
