Displaced Palestinians

The Data

• The data set was collected by The UN Refugee Agency to keep track of forcibly displaced Palestinians. I wanted to conduct a difference between two proportions test on refugees from 2022, so I redefined the Population.Type variable to 2 levels (Refugee, Other), then looked at the totals for males and females. Looking only at the year 2022, the total number of males and females under the “Refugee” category was 53, (31 males and 22 females); on the other hand, the total number of males and females under the “Other” category was 67 (37 males and 30 females).

Research Question

• Is there a difference in proportion between the sex of displaced people and weather they are classified as refugees or other*?
  • The other category includes both asylum seekers and others of concern.

Hypothesis Test

• Conduct a difference between two proportions test between each sex and the altered population type variable.

Graphs and Plots

• In the graph above, the population of displaced Palestinians is categorized by the three different levels for the population type variable. ‘Asylum-seekers’ are people who are waiting to get a refugee status, and ‘Others of Concern’ are other groups of vulnerable people. A log transformation was performed on the y-variable (Total Number of Displaced People) to adjust to Egypt accepting the largest number of refugees by far.

• Fail to reject the null hypothesis

• With a p-value above 0.05, we do do not have enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis meaning amount of male and female displaced people is equally proportionate, and that the sex of the person doesn’t likely affect their population type.

Overview

• This data set put into perspective the amount of people who lose their homes due to the Israeli Occupation/ illegal settlements even when there isn’t and “official” war going on. I was surprised at how many more Palestinian refugees Egypt takes in compared to every other country.
