Difference in Two Proportions Test

Hypothesis

  • \(H_0:\) \(p_1 = p_2\)
  • \(H_A:\) \(p_1 \neq p_2\)

Testing Assumptions

  1. Independence within and between:
  • Within: both populations are < 10% of population of displaced male and female Palestinians.

  • Between: Male and Female are independent.

  1. success/ failure counts
Male Female Totals
Refugee 31 22 53
Others 37 30 67
Totals 68 52 120
  • \(\hat{p_M}=\) 0.456 [Male Displaced]
  • \(\hat{p_F}=\) 0.423 [Female Displaced]

Z-Statistic

  • Z-Stat = 0.359

Calculating the p-value

  • p-value = 0.6402

Decision

  • Fail to reject the null hypothesis

  • With a p-value above 0.05, we do do not have enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis meaning amount of male and female displaced people is equally proportionate, and that the sex of the person doesn’t likely affect their population type.

Overview

  • This data set put into perspective the amount of people who lose their homes due to the Israeli Occupation/ illegal settlements even when there isn’t and “official” war going on. I was surprised at how many more Palestinian refugees Egypt takes in compared to every other country.
