Does the movie distributor have a significant impact on the amount of theater showings? By looking at the three different years, before, during, and after covid, I am hoping to create a greater understanding of if the distributor matters and why. Film distributors are responsible for the marketing of a film. It is an important part of financing a film. *** Affirm Films: Division of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE): Took a hit from COVID in 2020 and invested in creating a streaming platform. Launched Streaming Service “SONY PICTURES CORE” in 2021.
CBS Films: Went out of business in 2019.
Lions Gate Films: Had a $50 million hit over COVID-19 production shutdown. Did not make any changes initially. Signed deals with Roku and Peacock in 2022.
Neon: Surveyed viewers on preference of in theater or digital releases. They received an overwhelming response of in theater requests. Pulled all their digital windows and continued to release in theaters only.
Paramount Pictures: Formed through a merger of CBS and Viacom in 2019. Paramount + launched 2021.
Roadside Attractions: Small distributor who is frequently outbid by larger competitors. Don’t believe in overbidding for films. Solely makes films to put in theaters.
Saban Films: Saban does a lot of deals internationally, but still keeps steady numbers in America.
Twentieth Century Fox: Bought by Walt Disney company in 2019. Partners with Hulu.
Universal Pictures: Peacock streaming service launched in 2020.
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures: Disney+ launched in 2019. In March of 2020 they announced they would no longer report box office figures as films began to cancel world wide.
Warner Bros: HBO MAX created in May 2020. *** Right-side Panel for Panel 5
