Class-Based Anti-Establishment

Pilot: Analysis

Background

This is an exploratory pilot study. Broadly, we’re examining here whether the driver of anti-establishment (social/racial vs. economic/class-based) is associated with class-based solidarity / economic policy.

To that end, participants did the following: (1) listed 5 groups that are short-changed by the way things are currently done in the US; (2) listed 5 groups that are benefiting from the way things are currently done in the US; (3) indicated who they think is responsible for each of these groups’ position; (4) indicated if people like them are short-changed or benefiting from the way things are currently done in the US (and why); (5) completed an anti-establishment scale; (6) indicated their attitudes toward racial and economic inequality; (7) indicated their support for progressive policy; (8) indicated their group identification and inter-group solidarity; and (9) completed ideology and demographic measures.

We want to categorize responses as either social/racial, economic/class, political, or other. To that end, I looped the responses through chat-gpt. I prompted chat-gpt with the following:

roups in society can be drawn along economic/class lines or social/racial lines. For example, categorizing groups as the poor, the working class, the rich, and the upper class is doing so based on economic/class standing in society. Alternatively, categorizing groups as racial minorities, women, lgbtq, and men is doing so based on social/racial lines. Is the following group categorized along economic/class lines or social/racial lines? If it is economic/class, please respond with class. If it is social/racial, please respond with social. If it is neither of these two categories, then detect if it is a political group or not. For example, a political group can be a certain ideology, political party, or the government. But, I still have to budget out what I’m going to spend and still try to keep money in savings just in case. With costs rising everywhere, it’s hard to catch a break anymore.

However by favoring special groups based on race and sexual orientation, they are excluding and short changing the other groups, who may be just as needy yet are excluded based on their race or other arbitrary characteristics.

My reproductive rights are now restricted in many areas of the country which mean I cannot move to certain parts of country without considering what the means for my health. I cannot move to certain very conservative areas of the country due to people considering me less than a person. I would have to deal with the potential of racial violence. This is a systemic issues that I cannot solve.
2	I am a gay women and have friends in the LGBT community. Some states are attempting to ban abortion, which harms my rights and body autonomy. There are also laws to limit the rights of trans people, such as requiring teachers to out trans youth, which can put them in danger.bI can imagine that transphobic policy makers are coming after gay marriage soon.
2	The system is designed so that those who have the most money and power can keep as much control and wealth as they want to, Meanwhile those at the bottom struggling are always told they need to sacrifice so that the wealthy do not have to.

It is a lot on one person but it is also necessary. I cannot afford to not work when providing for children and oneself has become so expensive. Cost of living is excessive today.

Other groups are given preferential treatment in hiring and education,all in the name of “equality” and “fairness.”
2	I am a stay-at-home mom and I strongly feel that I’m looked at as less than I am. Most people act like this is not a job, when in reality it is a job I never get to clock out of or even get paid for.
2	If we want to bring about real change then the choice isn’t only between protests and politics. We have to be willing to do both and that’s raise awareness and cast our ballots to vote.
2	Being a white female, many other groups are given priority in jobs, college acceptance, etc. The minorities, including illegals, get free everything - housing, health care, food, phones, schooling. I don’t make much money, but still have to pay taxes which goes to paying their way. This is wrong.

There is still underlining discrimination against people of color, for example: take a trip to a grocery store chain in a poor Black neighborhood vs the same grocery store chain in a wealthy white neighborhood. It simply is how the system works.

Participants indicated their support (1 = Strongly Oppose to 5 = Strongly Support) for the following policies:

Policy 1: Congress has not increased the federal minimum wage, currently set at 7.25 Dollars, since 2009. Some Congresspeople are proposing a policy that would gradually raise the federal minimum wage to 15 Dollars an hour by 2025. After 2025, the minimum wage would be adjusted each year to keep pace with growth in the median wage, a measure of wages for typical workers.

Policy 2: Some Congresspeople are proposing a policy that would help to address the student loan debt crisis by forgiving up to 50,000 Dollars in loans per borrower. Approximately 42 million Americans, or about 1 in 6 American adults, owe a cumulative 1.6 trillion Dollars in student loans. Student loans are now the second-largest slice of household debt after mortgages, bigger than credit card debt.

Policy 3: Some Congresspeople are proposing a housing affordability policy that would help ensure that every American has a place to live. The policy would allow for smaller, lower-cost homes like duplexes, townhouses, and garden apartments to be built in middle- and upper-class neighborhoods, and would build new nonprofit homes.

Policy 4: Some Congresspeople are proposing a bill which would phase out the use of fossil fuels, with the government providing clean energy jobs for people who can’t find employment in the private sector. All jobs would pay at least 15 Dollars an hour, and include healthcare benefits and collective bargaining rights. This would be paid for by raising taxes on incomes over 200,000 Dollars a year by 15 percentage points.

Policy 5: Some Congresspeople are proposing a bill which would expand Medicare to every American, with the government providing health insurance to every American citizen. All out of pocket costs such as copays and premiums would be eliminated. This policy would change Americans’ insurance provider but would not prevent them from accessing medical services already available to them under their current plan. Individuals could supplement the public plan with a private option if they wanted.

Policy 6: Some Congresspeople are proposing a bill which would lead to comprehensive marijuana reform legislation. It would help rebuild communities that have been the most impacted by marijuana criminalization under federal law. It would also remove marijuana from the federal list of banned substances, allowing states to set their own marijuana policies. It would also create pathways to erase previous convictions and prohibit discrimination based on the use or possession of marijuana.
