For this month’s SheffieldR Group, we’ve invited Dr Tom August of the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Wallingford, to talk about the rnbn.pkg, an ROpenSci package he developed, allowing users to access the National Biodiversity Network Gateway directly through R.
Tom will also be giving an APS departmental seminar, 1pm wed 23 Sep, APS Common Room on Using technology to enhance citizen science.

We also take this opportunity to introduce plans for a SheffieldR Group Biodiversity Hack. During the hack, scheduled to begin in Feb 2016, we plan to focus on the NBN data to collaboratively develop outputs that could be of use either to Sheffield Council or local wildlife organisations.
We are still working on the format, which is likely to run over a series of sessions, but the main outcomes for participants we are aiming for are to:
Improve R skills and experience collaborative working and version control
Explore the potential of resources on the open web to build insight, services and education.
Understand the potential of open scientific computing to provide solutions to real world challenges
So come along to find out more, get involved, give us your feedback and help develop the sessions to maximise outcomes for participants at all levels.
