1. Have you ever attended an event offered by the Disability Subcommittee at UAMS?

1a. How did you hear about these events?

1b. What did you think of the previous Disability Subcommittee activities you participated in?

excellent
The presentation/training was fine but I had recommended the speaker and it was much more complicated than necessary to make the arrangements.
They were well organized and informative.
I really appreciated the different perspectives to consider. Sessions provided helpful and impactful information. I hope that any barriers mentioned in the discussions are addressed by UAMS leadership.
I attended a webinar on disability assess on our campus.
I think they are great, but I wish more people attended.

2. Which of the following activities would you be interested in participating in during the upcoming year?

2a. What kind of webinar would you like to see?

Inclusive language/questions to use when it is unclear whether someone has a disability or not; how to intervene especially when witnessing a disability-related microaggression
Info on ways to include staff/patients who are neuro divergent or have head injuries
disability resource/information
neurodiversity (different thinking and communication styles)
most common disabilities in the workplace, how they are identified, and examples of accommodations. also how to encourage people with disabilities to apply for positions at UAMS and how to support them while they are here.
Common issues in the workplace that needs to be highlighted
How to apply for accommodations/ what accommodations are/ protective rights under the law/ introduction to who the UAMS ADA advocates are
Parenting the adult child with disabilities
Accommodations in the workplace
How to handle discrimination
Inclusion
Offer various workshops, programs for various disabilities.
Available resources for the disabled and caregivers. Explanations of how to access the resources.
Autoimmune Diseases (the unseen disabilities)
Increasing accessibility of clinic spaces
Learn more on how I can support others who have disabilities.
It would be useful if UAMS staff and faculty had a broader understanding of disabilities than just people using chairs. It would be helpful to have education on invisible disabilities, the social model of disability, and how chronic illnesses can function as disabilities.

2b. What other kind of activity would you like to see?

List of resources for employees with disabilities - how to get help with issues at UAMS
Disability laws in the workplace
Would like to know specific state services offered and how to go about getting access.
not sure
I’m not sure - time is a concern.

2c. Why wouldn’t you attend a Disability Subcommittee event?

I’m not that fascinated with disabilities.
not at work when events occur

3. What other feedback do you have for the Disability Subcommittee at UAMS?

I wish we had more participation
I would like to see UAMS pay more attention to access in regard to all of their events. Make sure venues are accessible, not just for mobility impaired but for sensory and other types of disabilities. Include information on access in announcements/promotional materials about the event. For example, provide information on how to request an interpreter or large print/materials; if it is a community event,is there accessible parking available, etc.
A quarterly newsletter distribution of UAMS and subcommittee events and/or new education.
Keep up the great work, I hope the subcommittee and events continue to grow.
This is definitely an area that needs more awareness. Disabilities in the workplace are in the shadows.
Do a lot of promotion in the UAMS announcements with plenty of notice for people to participate. With more notice, departments can help promote by including in their social media and internal newsletter outreach.
A disability can be physical or mental, visible or invisible. It is a range of actions that cannot be performed with or without an assistive device of some kind. Bathrooms, sidewalks, airplane seats, housing, replace step escalators with incline escalators, remove steps and replace them with ramps, so many places where we can do better. Our country is way better than other countries, and I have been to many, many of them, at providing those with disabilities a way to feel the value of being a productive member of society yet there is a lot of work to be done. Every day we need to look at things and ask ourselves how can I make this activity more achievable/enjoyable/possible for a wider audience.
I would like to know that my place of work at The Family Medicine Clinic is ADA complete. I also thank the disability subcommittee for their work to assure our facilities are ADA assessable. Not only because it’s the law but because this helps our patients to know they are important to us as people.
I am diabetic. No support on campus. I also have had 7 spinal surgeries, both knees replaced, and most recently my shoulder fixed. I have constant pain and parathesias in both hands and feet. No support, no nothing. I am a nurse of 43 years. No one has ever asked me if they can make my environment less painful. It might cost a little money! However, I am still walking and working full time!
Thank you for reaching out!
I think that this is a great idea a people with different disabilites need support as well
please provide virtual attendance options as well
Resources available on campus for people with disabilities. Information like where you can park, what services are offered and where on campus these are available.
Let’s be all inclusive: not all disabilities are visible. Super intelligent and motivated people are challenged with some type of physical or emotional disability daily. Support groups are a way to get people to admit and seek support for their disabilities. UAMS is not only known for their excellence in medical care, but for their kindness and compassion for all that enter their doors.
Keep doing what you are doing to make sure ALL employees feel valued.
Our Internal Medicine-Pediatric primary care clinic at Rahling Road provides care for many patients/families of children and adults with disabilities. If you design a T-shirt we would love to advertise this in our clinic lobby as I think there could be significant interest from our patient population.
Educate campus community as a whole on the various disabilities and provide data reflecting# of employees w/disabilities are employed and/or accommodations provided.
I have a few family members who are disabled, it would be nice to better understand how to help those family members. Knowing where those family members can find dentists and physicians that will see them. I’ve seen patients with mental illness don’t always get the best of care since aren’t always able to communicate where they have pain. Caregivers can burnout when they try to take family members appointments and the their doctors have no experience with treating adults or children with disabilities.
I rarely see much awareness for the resources available for people with disabilities. It would be nice to see more advertisements/flyers/emails detailing what resources are available and what is considered as a disability here in our UAMS community.
Hello. I work on the education team within the Institute for Digital Health & Innovation. I am also a Ph.D. student at UCA in a DEI leadership studies program focusing on digital-age education and curriculum development. Through COVID, my team provided education for telehealth/telemedicine to providers and patients. An area I felt needed more attention was telehealth/telemedicine for those with disabilities. I realized that the provider and the patient may need additional support/education/tools for an effective telehealth visit. I’ve been researching this topic as a potential dissertation, with the thought of identifying the needs and developing education/training support through an online workshop. I learned about your committee in the announcements yesterday. Would it be possible to work with your committee to research the need for this training and possibly present an online workshop once content is created? Thank you.
Include the Regional Centers when you have events. Just because we are not on campus does not mean we will not participate.
Just a suggestion to publicize the committee a little more, since I wasn’t aware of the committee or its activities until I happened to see this survey mentioned (and this may be the case for others as well)
A little more information and learn more about the employee resource group if one of the many disabilities that could possibly happen .
None.
Just want to thank you for all the work you do on behalf of the disability community at UAMS! It can feel really isolating to be disabled at a large institution, and I know firsthand how hard the committee works to advocate on behalf of employees and students.
I would like to see more discussion and resources for neurodivergence and hidden disabilities.
give an in-depth explanation or definition of what is disability, what laws have been set for disability, what current programs to help people with disabilities, what are the current ways UAMS is doing to celebrate disability month, ….

What is the point/goal of this subcommittee? I have a disability. I have worked for UAMS for almost 16 years, I’ve never heard of this group much less heard of any activities that were offered.

What is the point of a disability themed book club? or a t-shirt? I’m honestly confused about this. What is a disability-themed webinar? Do you mean a webinar about disabilities (that would be hard since they are all different)…maybe about what resources are available to employees (that would be a good one).
Promote events more within UAMS.
.
I would like to see the committee featured in a Town Hall meeting to disperse more information.
