Using data from NHGIS and Bob Rudis’s streamgraph package, I’ve charted shifts in the immigrant population in metropolitan Chicago over the past 90 years. Like much of the country, the immigrant population has changed from predominantly European to predominantly Latin American and Asian. I’ll post the code shortly in a GitHub repository - it is rather involved for an RPubs post! Also, I think this chart is best for interpreting general trends rather than exact numbers, as immigration definitions/categories can change from Census to Census, and the available data vary for each Census as well. For example, in 1960, aggregate data for “foreign stock” persons are available, which lumps foreign-born individuals with individuals of foreign-born parentage - so I’ve omitted 1960 data here, for which values are interpolated.
