Convert from wide to long format
Look at each set of hate-crimes Convert the dataset from wide to long with the pivot_longer function. It will take each column’s hate-crime type combine them all into one column called “victim_cat”. Then each cell count will go into the new column, “crimecount”. Finally, we are only doing this for the quantitiative variables, which are in columns 3 - 10. Note the command facet_wrap requires (~) before “victim_cat”.

Hate crimes target people based on race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, etc. So tracking and understanding their frequencies is very important for safeguarding the well-being of citizens. The data set used for the assignment showed the hate crimes in New York’s counties in the year 2010-2016. This set was organized by individual New York counties, using the year 2010-2016. Each row of the data set kind of focused on a specific type of crime, these were “Crimes against Persons” and “Property Crimes”. And after that classification the data is broken down into crimes targeting specific groups (ex: anti-female, anti-age, anti-male, etc). One good thing about this data set was the clear breakdown of hate crimes by category, therefore allowing for specific analysis to be conducted. For instance at one point we focused on just anti-lgbt hate crimes and within that category we were able to see anti-transgender, anti-gay, etc. Also the county wise data was a good part of this data set so people can focus on the data by location. One possible negative aspect is the way the data was collected and the potential for bias. The data was collected by law enforcement agencies who are not obligated to submit data so there could be some under reporting. Two possible paths to study later one would be to compare hate crime rates with county population densities. This could shed light on whether or not hate crimes are more common in rural or urban areas. Also you could compare the population densities with specific hate crimes to see if one type is more common in denser or sparser areas. In order to continue building upon what was explored in this assignment I might want to integrate the hate crime data set with socioeconomic data. In 2012 the data showed a spike in hate crimes, especially crimes against Jewish people so I would want to see how time/seasonality impacts the prevalence of such crimes.
