Essay:
Positive and negative aspects of the data set: The data set is very broad and therefore can allow us to differentiate easily between different types of hate crimes while analyzing. It’s also very well separated to allow us to study different regions and the rates of crime in each. However, It’s very difficult to assess the accuracy and precision of the dataset. The hate crimes reports are made by police officers which can lead to a few different inconsistencies such as which type it was filed under or even if it was filed as a hate crime at all. I’m not aware of if there’s a standard code for which category to put these crimes into but to effectively use these results i think it would be necessary to find out.
2 more paths to examine: As I’m Jewish I’d be really interested in seeing the percentage of Anti-Jewish crimes in each region, especially compared to the percentage of the area’s population that is Jewish. It would also be really interesting to look at the rates of anti-gay hate crimes around 2011 when gay marriage was legalized in New York and see if it increased or decreased.
Follow Ups: I would love to see if there are any datasets of the demographics of some of these regions and see how heavy the correlation is between number of people of that demographic and number of hate crimes. Also, as I mentioned above, I’d be really interested in finding out about the systems in place for how these hate crimes are classified. That information could help us better understand the differences in types of hate crimes, point us towards the groups that have the largest problems, and let us begin to work towards having a healthy environment for everyone to live in.
