Introduction

The Premier League is one of the most presitgious football leagues in the world. Every season it captures the hearts of millions of fans worldwide as 20 of the best teams in the world fight for champion status.

The most intriguing aspects of the Premier League and most sports worldwide, is the difference in performance when playing at home versus when playing away from home. The home advantage phenomenon has been a topic of discussion for many years.

In this analysis, I will deep dive into the Premier League 2020/21 Season and examine the performance of Home teams vs Away Teams to better understand the dynamics of home advantage

Data Collection

The data for this analysis was collected from Kaggle. An open source data collection tool that provides access to sports data in a number of file formats

Data Overview

Below is the data to show the total number of games played in the Premier League in the 2020/21 Season. The bar chart breaks down how many total home wins there were that season vs away wins

Home vs Away Goals Scored

Now that we have seen the overview of the data, lets break down the home vs away goals to see if home teams are taking advantage of home field advantage by scoring more goals

Home vs Away Teams Shots

Now we will compare the amount of shots taken on Goal between the Home teams and the Away team

Hypothesis

I hypothesize that home teams perform better than away teams in games because they take more shots and score more goals.

This can be represented mathematically as:

\[ H_0: \mu_{\text{home}} \geq \mu_{\text{away}} \]

Where: - \(H_0\) is the null hypothesis stating that there is no difference in performance between home and away teams. - \(\mu_{\text{home}}\) represents the mean performance of home teams. - \(\mu_{\text{away}}\) represents the mean performance of away teams.

Scatter Plot

I created a Plot that shows the data of every home and away game and plot home team goals vs away team shots for all games in the 2020/21 season. On this plot we see the distribution between home and away teams in terms of performances as shots and goals is a big indicator of performance.

Conclusion

The analysis investigated the performance of home teams compared to away teams in the Premier League 2020/21 season. My hypothesis suggested that home teams perform better than away teams due to their advantage in taking more shots and scoring more goals.

After examining the data, my findings support the hypothesis. Home teams, recorded higher numbers of shots and scored more goals than their away counterparts. This suggests that playing at home provides teams with a performance boost, potentially due to factors like crowd support, familiarity with the stadium, and a psychological advantage.

In summary, my analysis indicates that home teams indeed have an advantage in the Premier League, which can be attributed to their superior shot-taking and goal-scoring abilities. This insight provides valuable information for understanding team dynamics and performance in the league.
