Background

In the current design, we manipulate both PT (PT_10 vs. blank control) and framing (competitive vs. cooperative). The PT manipulation is as before. For the framing manipulation, we used the words “opponent” and “power game” in the competitive condition, and “partner” and “trust game” in the cooperative condition.

Attention checks

Before we keep going, let’s see how many passed attention checks.
att_1: If you, as Sender, forwarded $5 to the Receiver, how much would the Receiver then have in their account?
att_2: If the Receiver had 15 dollars in their account and returned 6 dollars to you as the Sender, how much would the Receiver end up with?

att_1 att_2 N
0 1 7
1 0 4
1 1 190

Great. That leaves us with 190 participants who passed both checks.

Off-task time spent

Let’s also see who spent a lot of time off-task during the manipulation page. To that end, I gathered everyone’s on- and off-task time per page. Then, I took the mean off-task time per participant per page for any page that isn’t the manipulation, as well as the manipulation page. If a participant spent more than double off-task time in the manipulation page, as they did in all of the other pages, their responses are flagged. Let’s see how many flagged and just how many seconds we’re talking here.

comp 0 0 Daddy is gong to eat well tonight. I am going to keep every red cent, there is no penalty for me doing so and the chances that this decision actually executes are non-existent because the whole thing is rigged, these ‘researchers’ have no intention of giving anyone anything.
comp 0 0 They would feel good, as hey got a lot of money from them. not the fill amount, but is still is a lot.
comp 1 0 They’d be grateful for receiving $30. At the same time, they’d be wondering about the sender’s intentions.
comp 0 0 They would feel lucky, deserving, and trusted. They might also feel incentivized to take advantage of this luck and not return the favor adequately (fairly). I would feel a little bit hesitant to send them this money because I would feel they would keep a lot of it.
comp 0 0 If I were the receiver and I received $30 from the sender sending me their $10, I would be overjoyed and would have to choose between keeping all of the money or perhaps splitting it with the sender. If I split it with the sender, we would both end up with more than we started with. On the other hand, I could keep all $30, and that’s most likely what I would do in that scenario.
comp 0 2 Wow that Sender took a big risk and believes in me. I feel like they deserve some of this money back.
comp 0 2 As receiver I’d be happily surprised that the sender sent me all of their allotment and wouldn’t flinch in sending half ($15) back to them to show my gratitude for their generosity and trust.
comp 0 3 Oh thanks so much for sending me these profits I feel sincere gratitude! I would also like to give you feedbacks and benefits, here’s 10 dollars for you and we can all get rich.
comp 0 3 They would feel great having a nice chance at winning a $30 bonus. Then they would have to think really hard about if they are going to give any back to the other player.
comp 0 3 I feel that the receiver would feel completely surprised by this gift and that they would feel the sender had commited a very generous and selfless act. I feel this would make the receiver feel a sense of good will and positively boost their mood on that day.
comp 0 3 After reading a little about the receiver, i think they would be very appreciative to receive the 30 dollars. I also think they sound like a person who would be quick and happy to offer help when needed. So, there is a high chance that they would send back a generouse amount from the 30 dollars.
comp 0 5 I would think they felt good to be given such a large sum of money. Hopefully they’ll remember this leaves the sender with $0, and decide to give some money back.
comp 0 5 I would feel grateful to have received that amount, and would think the sender was a generous, caring person.
comp 0 5 I think the receiver would feel elated about receiving the said amount and also feel like they’re are important as a person to be considered for such an amount. Overall, I feel the receiver would be happy.
comp 0 5 I would feel grateful and thankful for the trust that the Sender gave me. I know that it is hard to trust a stranger and a gamble because they are gambling weather I am trustworthy or not. I will not break this trust by sending back half of what I received.
comp 0 5 I feel like they would be very happy to have received such a large amount. They must feel on the other end is a kind and happy individual.
comp 0 5 I could leave this study right now with $30. There aren’t many opportunities to make $30 in one single study. It wouldn’t be a friendly move on my part, but I don’t know the other person. There will be no other repercussions. On the other hand, since this person trusted me, then I should reciprocate that trust. It may just be best for both of us to get $15. That is still a lot of money to make in a survey.
comp 0 5 I think they would be happy that I, the sender, was so generous in giving them everything I had been originally endowed with. I think they’d suspect I wanted to maximize cooperation and they’d feel pressured to be as kind to me as I was to them, but they might not want to act on full reciprocity.
comp 0 5 I feel very thankful but I am unsure of how much to send back, I may want to keep my profits for myself.
comp 1 5 I suppose they would be happy to receive the whole $30 but it would be difficult to guess beyond that. Most people would probably at least think about sending money back, maybe anywhere from $1-$15, so that person might think or do the same.
comp 0 5 I would hope that they would feel really grateful and excited to get that amount. They could use it to buy something to use while cooking; food, new gadget, etc.
comp 0 5 They would feel as if the sender is very trustworthy towards them. They also felt that the sender was fair and honest. They would be very happy.
comp 0 5 They would be glad that the other individual trusted them enough to send them that amount of money. They would want to act in kind and split the money between themselves and the sender. They want to be respectful and kind.
comp 0 5 happy to receive 30 dollars. Would probably send 15 back. He seems like a fair person who likes to work remotely. I as an honesty test think would be fair and honest .and would take the game
comp 1 5 If i received 30 dollars from the sender, I would personally feel grateful and fortunate. I’d be considering returning a fair amount to thank the sender while keeping enough to meet my needs
comp 0 6 I would feel a sense of responsibility and trust placed upon me by the Sender. I’d be thinking about to reciprocate their trust and perhaps considering returning a fair amount to maintain a positive and cooperative relationship in this power game.
comp 0 6 I think the researcher would feel grateful to have received the bonus and also more willing to share the outcome with the sender.
comp 0 7 They would probably feel gracious and glad that they received such a sum of money, that they would probably think about giving a little bit back to the sender as a gesture of good will.
comp 0 7 The receiver might feel grateful for the unexpected surprise and excited that the Sender has entrusted them with the task of deciding how much to send back. They may also worry about “doing the right thing” in reciprocating the gift, since this was perhaps done in good faith.
comp 0 8 I would feel lucky and grateful that I received the full amount possible. It would make it difficult to decide what to send back.
comp 0 9 They would more than likely be grateful that someone sent them so much money. It might even be surprising as most people are not that generous.
comp 0 10 I would feel as the receiver completely grateful and happy that the sender trusted in me. I would send the sender back half of what they sent to me.
comp 0 10 If I was the receiver, id probably be putting a lot of blind faith into humanity. But at the end of the day as long as its house money, the risk reward ratio is worth it.
comp 0 10 Wow! Thank you! It’s nice that a stranger would be willing to share all their wealth with me. I should pay it forward.
comp 0 10 Flattered that someone who doesn’t really know me would trust me so much. I would then feel obligated to return the favor and at least split the total in half.
comp 1 10 As I reading the Receiver’s notes I was feeling like if I was them and I had that whole \(30 on my side at the time, I might just take it and return nothing. They stated that they love baking and cooking and entertaining friends which made me feel like they might take that latex2990a063ff05be4a5659624984407677 and send me 10\), or if they were feeling generous, maybe a 50/50 split. My receiver seems to be a generous person
comp 0 10 I’m slightly concerned they are going to have issues grasping the game because their command of English was pretty terrible and it showed in the typed response they provided. This alone makes me skeptical of them grasping the whole “work together to make more” sorta concept.
comp 0 10 I imagine the Receiver might be thinking that the money is an unexpected bonus - in the spirit of cooperation and working together, they could return/match the trust of the Sender and return half of the money. On the other hand, there is no obligation to act in this way, and the Sender is not losing out because the money is a bonus; the Receiver could justify a choice to retain all of the money or return less than half although this is less in the spirit of cooperation and teamwork that they said was important to them.
comp 0 10 They might well consider the Sender to be a very kind person. Whether or not they would want to reward that kindness is another question. It might well be that they would do so, but a survey response may not be accurate as to how this person would handle the windfall.
comp 0 10 I would probably be thinking if the amount that I was sent reflected selfishness from the sender or not. The sender could theoretically send 0 and I would not receive anything. I think how much the sender sends, describes much about who they are and also how they view this game. As a competition or cooperation in which both benefit.
comp 0 10 This person is an idiot but he took the leap of faith. I will give some Back. LOL. They might be feeling good seeing my generosity and send some back. I dont know if it said that the other person knows the rules as well but im basing it off of them knowing.
comp 0 10 I think they would welcome a bit of extra money. As a retired person, I am sure it can help out. I also think they might feel warmly about me as the sender.
comp 0 10 They’d think the Sender trusted them and was also an altruistic person. They’d likely want to send some of the money back in order to show appreciation and goodwill toward the Sender.
comp 0 10 I’m thankful that I’ve received this money. I appreciate what was giving to me, and I will find a way to pay it forward in my volunteer activities.
comp 0 10 I would be happy that they trusted me with the money. i would want to be fair and send them half back.
comp 0 10 That was the smartest move. They want my cooperation so we can both make out on this deal. I figure if I send them back $15.00, that will be a good day’s work.
comp 0 10 I would not blame the Receiver for keeping most of the money. I’d personally split the balance because we’re supposed to be working together.
coop 0 0 The Receiver would probably be in disbelief that the Sender sent the $10 maximum, thus giving them $30. I know I would be in total disbelief.
coop 0 0 They would feel some kind of invisible social pressure to return at least some of it, probably at least half to be a fair person. They may also think about how they can keep it and justify reasons why that would be ok, possibly about how many bills they have or other reasons why they need it. They may think about how they owe nothing to a random person and how they were odd to trust a random stranger.
coop 0 0 They would feel happy about receiving so much money. They would also probably start thinking that they should keep it all.
coop 0 0 I think they would be very happy that the sender sent them the maximum amount. I think they would be considering to do the trustworthy thing and send back 15 to the sender.
coop 0 0 I imagine the receiver, feeling appreciative of the $30 I sent, possibly thinking about how to respond positively to maintain trust in our interactions. They might also be considering the mutual benefits of returning some money to foster cooperation and future rewards.
coop 0 0 They would be happy to recieve the 30 dollars and woukd be tempted to keep the whole amount for themselves. There are no consequences for keeping the full amount, but the right thing to do would be to split it.
coop 0 2 They would be very happy I would imagine. I doubt they are expecting much and i think they would be really surprised if someone sent the whole $10 to them.
coop 0 3 I truly feel like they would expect me to keep the money and send nothing, hoping that they would be wrong.
coop 0 3 If the information they offer about themself is honest, then, they would be happy to ‘share the wealth’ so to speak. They would feel happy to be trusted and would want to be fair.
coop 0 3 I think it is only fair if I received $30 from a sender, I would send $15 back so that what we have both received is equal.
coop 1 3 They would be feeling grateful for the amount received. They are in the midst of thinking about being kind and sharing and doing the right thing or thinking of being selfish and keeping it to themselves.
coop 0 5 If they got that much from the sender they should feel extremely grateful and happy for themselves. And in return they should give at a minimum half of it back because if it werent for the receiver they could have got nothing.
coop 1 5 I think that receiving the thirty dollars would make the receiver feel good. I think that they would also gain a sense of trust.
coop 0 5 First and foremost, they will be thinking about how much they need the money at the moment. If they really need the money, I doubt they would send back much, if anything. If they don’t really need the money, they would try to send half back to be fair.
coop 0 5 They would feel very good. They did not have money and then was forwarded a nice amount and would be happy. I also think they would like me as a partner. I think that getting this money would probably also make them happy and that they would want more money as well.
coop 0 5 Wow, I did this little bit work for $30. I think I’ll keep it all. They will never know who I am. I was so easy to make this money.
coop 0 5 They would feel pleased. 30 dollars would be a significant bonus. Perhaps the other participant is very trusting or perhaps they don’t really need the money. Its tempting for them to keep all or most the money for themselves.
coop 1 5 I think they would be happy to see the extra money in their account, and possibly conflicted about how much to send back.
coop 0 5 They are probably feeling really excited to have thirty dollars and they may or may not be feeling obligated to share. I think they would be inclined to share maybe less than half.
coop 0 5 Receiver triples in value. reciever send to $10 dollar. whatever the receiver doesn’t return, they keep.
coop 0 6 I would be grateful to the sender. I would make sure that I returned a fair amount to them as well.
coop 0 7 They are probably thinking that they are in a beneficial position because they can choose to be greedy, or choose to be generous. They should think in terms of what they had before and the total net gain if it were to be cooperative
coop 0 7 If I received $30 I can use it to pursue my hobbies. And I would be very thankful to whoever have me the money but I might not return it
coop 0 8 I am thankful for the $30 and appreciate your trust and collaboration. I know it is hard to trust strangers sometimes but your compassion is meaningful.
coop 0 8 If I received $30 I would feel grateful towards the sender. I think many people wouldn’t be as selfless as the sender.
coop 0 8 Wow, I didn’t expect to receive this much money. The sender must be feeling really generous, so I think I’ll return half of it: \(15. </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align:left;width: 1cm; "> coop </td> <td style="text-align:right;width: 1cm; "> 0 </td> <td style="text-align:right;width: 1cm; "> 10 </td> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> I feel that hey would be thinking about deceiving me. To thank them I would return the favor and send them back the 15 so that we split the amount equally.
coop 1 10 I would feel that they really trusted me to send their entire amount. $30 seems like a lot of money so it is nice that they trusted me. It would make me feel obligated to do the right thing and send them a large amount back.
coop 0 10 I think they would be feeling pretty happy that someone sent them the entire $10 ($30). Maybe they think the person trusted them since they are someone who in their professional lives helps others in times of need.
coop 0 10 As the receiver I would feel good that the sender trusted me and sent all their money. I would be grateful and I would then send $15 back to the sender so that it is a fair situation.
coop 0 10 They would probably be thinking to send back half if they imagine the person sending them money needs a little bit of it back.
coop 0 10 Wow! I can’t believe I received $30 from the sender. Since I only have $30 I want to use it to my life’s content and for something that will make me happy.
coop 0 10 I believe they would be very happy about the amount they received and very appreciative. They would feel that the sender was very generous and a very giving person.
coop 0 10 This means that the sender put a great deal of trust in the receiver, and I would reciprocate that trust.
coop 0 10 This person wants fast and easy money doing freelance activities. Having said that, I fully expect this person to keep the entire $30 for themselves and give nothing back in the receiver role.
coop 0 10 The sender is probably confident that we will want to maximize the amount for both of us. If we work together, it’s a win for both of us.
coop 0 10 I am believing they would be excited as first of all they are doing the surveys for pennies on the dollar. Secondly, I believe he would not want to be bothered too much by any complications, and may simply keep the money.
coop 0 10 Wow, they shared a lot with me, I should share half of what I was given, it seems fair. They trusted me to share so I should follow through on that trust.
coop 0 10 I think I would be feeling happy to be trusted to make a good choice with the money. As a restaurant worker, I would be used to working for tips and depending on others to treat me fairly.
coop 0 10 Assuming they know that the maximum amount one can have is $10, then I’d assume they’d feel pretty grateful/good. They’d then hopefully send half back ($15).
coop 0 10 I would feel grateful. My faith in humanity restored. I would also be very shocked that someone trusted a stranger with all of the money.
coop 0 10 If I were the receiver, I would be happy to receive the $30. I would want to return enough to make things fair + a small amount extra to recognize the risk the initial sender took in sending all their money.
