39 In this problem, the population was teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 living in the United States. The sample, in this case, were the 1028 teenagers contacted in the study.

PROBLEMS #11,13

11 This is an example of a designed experiment because, initially, when the students are divided and taught differently, the researcher controls and assigns the groups. Because the groups were taught differently, the researcher also intentionally varied the amount of the explanatory variable (method of learning) to record the response variable (test proficiency).

13 This is an example of an observational study. The sole intention of the survey was to measure the response, and not to influence the outcome in any way. Therefore, while the response is still recorded, the researcher is not able to claim causation.
