Background

Participants played the trust game – all as Senders. We previously collected Receivers’ responses to pipe into these surveys.

In the current study, participants did the following:
1. Completed individual difference measures: General trust and trait perspective taking (from the IRI_PT).
2. Read instructions of the trust game. They received $10 in their account. They can choose to forward any amount they choose to the receiver. That amount is then tripled, and the receiver can decide how much they want to return to the sender. Receivers indicated in advance how much they will return for every amount the Sender sent.
3. Then, Senders were randomly assigned a Receiver. They read that receiver’s short description of what they enjoy doing for work.
4. Participants in the PT condition were then asked to “step into the Receiver’s shoes” and write a few sentences on what is going through their mind in this game. Those in the control condition were just shown a blank screen.
5. Then, they indicated how much they wish to forward.
6. Then, they predicted how much their Receiver would send back for every hypothetical amount that they forwarded.
7. And finally, they answered some questions about how they feel about the exchange and how they think the Receiver felt.

Attention checks

Before we keep going, let’s see how many passed attention checks.
att_1: If you, as Sender, forwarded $5 to the Receiver, how much would the Receiver then have in their account?
att_2: If the Receiver had 15 dollars in their account and returned 6 dollars to you as the Sender, how much would the Receiver end up with?

What if we take advantage of the tri-modal distribution? What we can do is dummy-code responses base on the three peeks: 0, 5, and 10. So, each participant will get a 1 or 0 for each of these amounts. And then we’ll compare each of them on condition. Let’s see.

Open-text responses

forwarded traitPT PT
0 4.000000 I feel that the receiver is thinking that they want me to give them the maximum amount of money that I can. They may want to give me some back as as help to me, but they may want to keep the entire amount so they can make as much as possible
0 3.333333 As the Receiver, I might feel cautious about returning too much to the Sender, even though they’ve sent me $15. I’d consider keeping a reasonable portion for myself while also showing goodwill by returning a fair amount to maintain a balanced exchange.
0 3.333333 This person sounds like someone who is generous and friendly. They enjoy interacting with new people are making connections. They would want to help the other person as much as they could.
0 4.000000 The receiver is planning on keeping whatever they earn for themselves. The receiver believes there is no point in giving money away to a stranger you know nothing about.
0 4.000000 There probably thinking about what possible way or whatever stradagy they could potentially use to maximize there potential bonus winnings
0 2.000000 I think that the Receiver is hoping that I will transfer a large amount of dollars to them, so they have a chance of the bonus. I think they are somewhat likely to transfer what they view as a fair amount of funds back to me.
0 5.000000 He seeks adventure and excitement in his life and he wants to go places. He wants to try something new. He’s seeking a break in meaningless, routine life. In this case, I don’t think the receiver expects much from sender. He’s probably hoping for a compassionate heart.
0 4.000000 As they seem to like manual labor, they like to feel accomplished and put in hard work. Based on that, I feel that they like to feel rewarded as well, as mowing the lawn feels accomplishing. Its also apparent they like individualized success. As such, I don’t think they would send much back to me or care much about my outcomes.
0 4.000000 They could be thinking about how much they could possibly keep for themselves. They could also think about returning the generosity of depending on how much they receive
0 1.666667 This person is a normal person, that means they are just as selfish as any stranger I’ve met. This person sounds self centered because they said they exercise to live as long as possible.
0 4.000000 The Receiver is thinking about how much money I am going to send them. They are feeling positive. I believe that they won’t mind if I send them nothing at all as he/she is a creative person. I am considering sending them nothing at all because her description about themselves is a bit vague. I know nothing about the person and don’t feel comfortable sending her any money.
0 4.333333 I think he will feel happy and grateful at me helping him out. He will probably send me back half of what I sent.
0 4.333333 The person getting the money might be careful about giving back too much, wanting to keep some for themselves. They might also be thinking if it’s safe to trust the person sending money and if both can gain from this
0 5.000000 They are thinking that they hope they receive at least some money from the sender. They are thinking that if they are lucky enough to be rewarded, then they should at least return some of it back to the sender.
0 4.000000 They are thinking about keeping the money for themselves. A lot of people on Connect are competitive in regards to earning money. If they are competitive, their choice will reflect that.
0 5.000000 By stepping in the receiver’s shoes, I’m definitely beginning to feel a bit apprehensive. I’m mostly thinking that I shouldn’t get my hopes up too much and if I were to receive anything, it would be a nice gesture but not really expected.
0 4.000000 They are thinking that they hope the sender will give them some money. They would feel happy if that happened. But they are not sure and that is what makes them uneasy.
1 2.666667 They would likely be thinking for themselves and hoping that they can maximize their money. I don’t think they would be caring much about the other person.
1 3.666667 They are thinking that they will get a generous partner who will share the money fairly and not a selfish partner who will keep all the money.
1 4.000000 I think that the Receiver has mixed feelings. I feel that the Receiver is unsure that the Sender will send them any money. However, they are hopeful and trusting that the Sender will be generous and trusting as well.
2 5.000000 This person seems fair and honest. I think he or she will return half of whatever amount that I send. But I am not sure, so I will only send a small amount to test my theory.
2 3.666667 I am the receiver and wonder how much are they going to send me. Are they going to be generous and give a goof amount. Or are they going to be selfish and give very little. Or are they going to be even.
2 4.333333 I am hoping that the sender will send me at least 5. That way, I will return the same amount back to them
3 4.000000 i think they are hoping for a good outcome in this game. i hope they will be trustworthy as we complete it together.
3 5.000000 I think they would enjoy playing the game. But, I do think they are very competitive. For this reason, I am doubtful that they will return anything at all. Perhaps a small amount.
3 2.666667 As the receiver, they will be wondering how much the sender will send and if they will send any back. They will feel excited and try to guess the amount they will receive.
3 4.000000 I think that the receiver is probably thinking out this game and what they would like to get out of it. They are probably really enjoying the thinking process and aspect of this game. They are probably thinking about how they can possibly maximize their earnings.
3 2.000000 They will end up wondering if the person will be nice and give them some money. They will think the other person is greedy and won’t give them anything.
4 3.333333 They may feel nervous because they don’t really trust anonymous people. They may be wanting to take all the money I send.
4 3.666667 I couldn’t really figure the way the recipient is thinking but I can guess the receiver is somewhat smart and reasonable. He/she could at least giver a favorable return. It will be fun to play the game with the recipient.
4 4.333333 They are thinking that I may choose not to send any money which means they get nothing. In a way they have to trust me to share some of the money with them.
4 4.000000 I will want to make sure both the receiver and I both get to keep some money. I don’t mind if the receiver has more than me because itis free money and i don’t have to be stingy about it.
4 3.666667 They probably like to help people that in need, and would offer extra at no money. I think they will return at least 1/3 of their amount to me
4 5.000000 I feel like I can see them as being shy and kept to themselves, but any nice gesture from someone they would be elated and thankful. I would think they would go with 4 or 5.
4 5.000000 as a receiver will be excited and delighted to participate in this survey and about the game am in suspense for what my sender gives out and will do the same and give back equally
4 5.000000 This seems like a worthwhile game, so If I was the receiver I’d be thinking about the sender’s decision and how I’d multiply my earnings.
4 3.666667 they thinking how beneficial it is to them being the receive rand how much to return to me as the sender
4 3.666667 they are probably thinking about my what is their profitable as a receiver and feeling a bit cautions
5 4.333333 They are thinking about how much they should send to respect the sender. They likely want to retain most of the money but want to seem reasonable sending money back.
5 2.333333 I think the Receiver is feeling hopeful that the Sender will send them money. The Receiver has no power at the beginning of the exercise, so all they can do is act on faith that the Sender will send them money. I think the Receiver might be a little anxious not knowing what to expect from the Sender.
5 4.000000 They might be overwhelmed by the amount of thinking required, particularly around the math portion of the activity (my initial deposit tripling, how much to send back, etc). They might choose to keep all of the money.
5 4.000000 I think this individual would be content with whatever they received. Their described personality leads me to believe that they are quite content and laid back.
5 3.000000 I am a trustworthy person and believe in being kind to people. I will do what is fair because I think society is important to me.
5 5.000000 Since this person runs a business and must have and keep satisfied clientele in order to stay financially successful, my guess is that they must balance out thinking of others vs. thinking of their own needs and wants. That tells me that this person is willing to trust others and develop positive, mutually beneficial relationships.
5 4.000000 I think that I wouldn’t trust the sender to send me more than they kept, so I would want to keep the majority.
5 4.333333 The receiver seems to like being in the position of running a team. They probably feel like they would want to ensure success for others in addition to themselves.
5 4.333333 I feel like they would think about helping another person. Since they like to help people and it makes them feel good, I believe they would feel good about sending me back at least a decent amount.
5 4.333333 I think they will be conscious in their approach to the problem and try to come up with a maximum fair reward for both parties. I think they are rational and organized, and will bring those values to the task.
5 4.333333 I think they might be intrigued by this game, and by the research behind it, and what conclusions can be drawn.
5 4.000000 I think that the receiver is considering how much I sent them and that considering the fact that it would be nice to return the favor, at least partially. They are deciding how much would be a decent amount to send back to me.
5 4.333333 The Receive feels good because the money end by sender gets triplet and that money should keep in the receiver. The Receive keeps as much as he wants and remaing money is added to the sender account.
5 5.000000 I am looking forward to this game, I’m excited to interact with and reciprocate with the sender. I hope the sender is a good hearted person.
5 5.000000 If i was a receiver I would look at the amount that sender sent. it can show how truth worthy the sender is and what his agenda is
5 4.000000 I feel like this would weigh how much trust one has for the other. I like this game cause i barely have trust issues.I feel like i would get a nice amount from the sender
5 4.666667 The person might feel a bit anxious in the receiver role. They are probably unsure if they can trust me as a stranger to do what they desire.
5 3.666667 I think that the Receiver sounds like they’re looking forward to seeing how this game goes. They seem like they really enjoy games and puzzles.
5 4.333333 i’d say they are nervous and somewhat excited at the same time. nervous because he doesn’t know how much i as the sender would be sending but also excited that i might at least send something. i guess he would send half or close to half of the money sent back
5 3.333333 They are thinking that most people cannot be trusted and if the sender does surprises them with money sent then in their heart they will return the favor to show support.
5 3.000000 They are probably wondering if the sender is a selfish person. They are also probably thinking about how much money they would share if any was given.
5 4.000000 I feel very excited and happy about the game, and hope we both enjoy the game. Do Return fairly, $5. Goodluck
5 2.666667 Receiver probably relies on the trust of the sender. If sender keeps all the money to his own, receiver wouldn’t get any money. However, sender also does this for his own benefit and expects something in return, so he would feel betrayed if receiver don’t return anything.
5 3.666667 They probably have the expectation that either both of us gain from this activity or they receive free money without any obligation to give back. They know they depend on my good will to benefit from this task as long as I agree to give any amount of money to them.
5 3.666667 If I were in my receivers shoes I would feel like this is a good opportunity to make money. Since they like remote work that is easy this should be just another easy task for them or a quick way to get money. With this said they would have to look at their moral standings to see how to share the money if at all. They could make real quick easy money by not sharing and it would be tempting but they would also realize that the other player was human. This would make it difficult to rip someone off just because they like easy work doesn’t mean they are not to be trusted.
5 4.000000 Being an upholster he knows the value of hard work. Knowing how valuable money is he would want to share it equally with the sender.
5 5.000000 They are probably thinking about sharing the money equally. He might be feeling that this would be an exciting game.
5 3.333333 They might feel obligated to return some of the money if I send it to them, fulfilling my faith in them. However, they might feel like they should be obligated to themselves first and that they should keep whatever they receive, as it’s not on them what I decide to do.
5 5.000000 The receiver would be hoping that more than half of the money is sent to him. The receiver would also hope to be part of those that the bonus would be awarded to.
5 5.000000 I think the fact that this receiver is so organized means that they have the patience to think about the decisions they make, which means they will have to consider if the extra money is worth the betrayal of a partner. They would probably be thinking about how similar I am to them, and I assume they would understand we have similarities and should make the money an even split.
5 5.000000 I imagine that this individual is expecting me to demonstrate generosity and send them money because they have every intention of returning the favor. In addition, their love of the outdoors suggests that they may use the money for enjoying the environment which is something that I can appreciate.
5 3.000000 They are probably anxious with some excitement. Also we should consider to help each other make this money so we both come out good.
5 4.333333 The receiver will be thinking that I might not be a flexible person. And that I might not play well to his liking.
5 3.333333 The receiver is probably thinking about not to trust the sender because a lot of people are totally not truth-worthy. As the sender i will return half of what is left.
6 3.000000 I think that this person won’t make decisions based on impulse and that they will have a reasonable approach to how the do this. They talk about leading a team, so I hope that if I am generousous to them they will respect that and return the favor
6 2.666667 They are probably annoyed that they didn’t start with money. They are hoping that they will be sent at least something and want to do anything they can to show that they’d be willing to send some back.
6 3.666667 I’m thinking I’ll send back 50% of what they send to me, that way we’ll both end up with something. And then I’ll donate my leftover amount.
6 4.333333 they might be feeling anxious and worried about how much to return back to me, because i the sender too is feeling curious and anxious about what the game will look like
6 4.000000 Hello, you don’t know who I am and probably not to trustworthy of me. But hear me out, we are in this together and you will receive triple what I send. Meaning if you send back half of the triple amount its a win win situation for the both of us.
6 3.333333 As a data analyst they are going to first analyze why they received the amount they did and then try to figure out if the person sending them the money is sincere in giving it to them or if they are just trying to make a good impression. As a receiver I think they would be happy to get a fair share of the money given to the sender. Hoping they are the type that also shares.
6 5.000000 I believe that they may be thinking that they are hoping that the Sender is generous and trusting. They are probably hoping that the Sender sends at least something and that they will probably return something to the Sender as well.
6 3.000000 The receiver getting the money might feel both excited and unsure. They might think about how much to give back, wanting to keep a lot for themselves but also be fair.
7 4.333333 I think this person would not want to think too much about the choices or consequences so they would choose quickly and more than likely selfishly.
7 2.666667 They are thinking about being creative and helpful. seems like they are interested in maximizing the money and being altruistic
7 4.000000 They are hoping I send money so it triples. I will send half of whatever I get back to them because they helped me out.
7 4.666667 Hey! Let’s share the wealth and hopefully get chosen for the bonuses. I trust you, so I’ll send $7 so we get at least $20 to start out with :)
7 3.333333 I think that most people are hoping to receive the max amount. Most will keep all of it. I think that this would be typical of the majority regardless of any information relayed about them.
7 5.000000 I think this person would understand the value of trust because he seems like someone who values hard work. I believe the person will return an amount they believe is fair back to me
7 4.000000 from the senders point of view and what i have seen from the short way he described himself , he feels like a pretty trustworthy person who loves remote works and love to be alone they are feeling confident about the trade and i believe he or she is an introvert and would be kind to send the money back
7 4.333333 They lead a small team so know what teamwork is like and how to achieve goals. I believe they would be fair in returning some back seeing as they would see me as a trustworthy person for sending.
7 4.666667 As the Receiver, I’m feeling glad to be chosen to take part in this experiment and help someone who might need it. I’m inspired to decide an amount that reflects my values around giving and receiving, and I look forward to the opportunity to positively impact someone else’s life.
8 4.333333 They likely will send very little back as they want to do little work and not think much. It’s possible they could give an equal amount back - just by not thinking through anything and simply cutting it in half - but it’s unlikely.
8 4.000000 If I were the receiver I would hope the other person would trust me but I know that is hard. I would be willing to send back half of what I would get. I would understand if the sender didn’t feel like they can trust someone they have never met or know very little about.
8 3.666667 The receiver is probably thinking about sending back about half of what they have received. They may feel some anxiety depending on the total amount if it is large.
8 4.000000 The receiver is probably thinking will the sender do the right thing and provide a higher amount to triple the amount so it benefits both of us.
10 5.000000 I think they want to be fair. They want to treat me as well as I treat them. They know that we both can benefit it we share with each other.
10 4.000000 The receiver seems to be interest in doing work in creative outlets rather than “left brain” activities in the IT industry that they perform currently. I presume that IT pays well and with 30 years of experience they could retire somewhat soon to pursue this new occupation.
10 3.333333 I would think that in their situation, they would want me(sender) to send them as much as I could so that they can receive as much h as they could. I would also think that once they receive the amount, they’ won’t be fair with the amount that they would send back to me.
10 2.666667 They probably are wondering how much the sender will trust them with. They also will likely be wondering whether they should return anything or just keep it all for themself.
10 3.666667 At this moment I feel they might play fair. I feel anyone with these instructions might want to play fair and benefit each other by sharing generously.
10 4.000000 They are putting their trust in a stranger, hoping that the person will send them money. I think they would be grateful for whatever is sent their way.
10 2.333333 I believe they like the game. they feel we should work together to split the money equitably. They should return half of the money received to sender.
10 4.000000 They stated they like to work together so i’m hopeful that they will return the money in an equitable way! it’s a lot to trust a stranger but i’m willing to try!
10 4.333333 I would guess they are feeling hopeful that they will get a cooperative partner. I think most people try to be hopeful in these types of situations and I think this person would feel similarly.
10 5.000000 I’d imagine the Receiver’s are excited because they have the final say. I could chose to send them all the money, and they could chose to send none back. It all depends on the type of person. If it was me I would return half.
10 3.333333 They want to make some money, as do I. Although they cannot say this outright. They are probably feeling excited and nervous as they are unsure what I will send them.
10 5.000000 Honestly they seem a bit lazy and I feel like even if I sent them the max I wouldn’t be likely to get much back. That said, I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope for the best. Prior to this study we were all at 0 dollars so we might as well see how it turns out.
10 5.000000 They are weighing whether I am a person with integrity and will treat them fairly if they try to maximize the return. They are thinking “How much do I trust this person?” Then they are probably thinking, “Does it really matter in the scheme of things.
10 3.000000 They might be thinking about making the most money and maybe splitting it in half. I think that is what they are thinking since they like to make a lot money.
10 2.666667 I think they might be interested in wanting more money since they are going on a trip soon. They may want extra money for the trip.
10 2.333333 I believe the receiver may be very optimistic about the outcome. The receiver seems they are familiar with peoples patterns.
10 2.333333 I want to maximize the payout and try to make them equal for both people involved. I will return half of my total amount.
10 5.000000 They might be assuming I may send all and they may return half. If not, at least they might return some.
10 3.333333 They are probably thinking they can use a little extra money in groceries for their dinner they are likely cooking. Splurge a little on something they normally wouldn’t buy themselves.
10 5.000000 I strongly believe that my counterpart is looking forward to making a very positive impact on my life. Volunteering sharpens the perspective of those involved in it.
10 5.000000 I feel the receiver is quite assertive and dominant but places trust in his team and can be quite fair when it comes to sharing in this game. I believe the receiver would return as much as I give him which I believe to be half of his receipt.
10 5.000000 I think you should take into consideration of being fair and practical. While the sender didn’t have to send you anything at all, they choose to. Ultimately, the decision is yours!
10 4.333333 They like to be busy and feel productive. They seem to be a hard worker and might be trustworthy. On the other hand they may like to get paid in order to feel like they have accomplished something.
10 4.000000 I think that the Receiver would send back half the amount that they were sent. Most people are honest and realize that in order to get the max benefit they would need the sender to send the full amount that would triple and then send back half the amount so that working together all becomes fair.
10 4.333333 Well, because they volunteer maybe they would give money back to me and play fairly. but it’s hard to say for sure
10 4.333333 Sometime it is easier cleaning and organizing things, but people are fascinating and intriguing. Putting things in their places is comforting and satisfying. Making decisions with consequences makes the day adventurous.
10 3.333333 As a Receiver, I am thinking that the Sender could possibly not send me anything which would be a bit upsetting. Though, if they do it triples the amount. If they send me any amount, I will send them back half as this is only fair. They do not have to trust me at all so whatever they send is them showing they have faith in me that I will do the right thing.
10 4.333333 The could be thinking about how to maximize their own earnings, which would be to keep all money sent. They could also be thinking about the most equitable decision and how to handle the money fairly.
10 3.666667 The receiver is retired and in need of a little extra money. They love doing studies and learning about new things. I believe the receiver is a generous person and would take a chance and possibly send a substantial amount or 100% back in hopes the other person does the same. I agree that taking studies are very interesting and fun to do.
10 5.000000 As someone that enjoys puzzles and solving problems with clear and definite answers, the best possible outcome for this game is clear: the more money the Sender gives to me, the more I can send back to maximize our reward. I am hopeful they will send me $10 so I can return $15 to them.
10 5.000000 I know it is very difficult to trust strangers these days and times. but in the spirit of the game let’s trust each other and believe that the best is achieved in the spirit of trust on any given occasion.
10 4.333333 I think that they are hoping that everyone involved will be benevolent and realize that if we all seek to invest in one another that we can all benefit in the end.
10 5.000000 They are thinking about how things might turn out during the game. They are wondering how much they should send back based upon what they have received.
10 4.000000 I think they are hoping that I will send them some money. If I send a small amount, they probably wouldn’t be happy. If I sent a decent amount, I believe they would want to send some back to me.
10 4.000000 I would share the money equally with the giver so that we could get the max amount. This would benefit both people equally.
10 3.666667 I think as the receiver I would honestly act in good faith and would be willing to send back half of whatever amount of money that the sender sent me if its the full amount(full $10 that’s then tripled to make $30). If it’s not the full $30 that I’d send back half of the amount minus the amount the receiver kept for themselves. That way both me and the sender would be ending up with the same amount of money from the game and it’d be a win win for both of us. I don’t know how much the sender would decide to send but I’d be willing to send back however much to make sure we’d both get the same amount in the end; that is of course if the sender decides to send some or all of the $10.
