Cost-burdened households pay more than 30 percent of their income for housing. The US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS) provides estimates of US households based on the percentage of income spent on housing. This report uses nation-level single year population estimates from the ACS for the years 2005 through 2021, excluding 2020, for which 1-year estimates are not available.

Data was accessed through the US Census Bureau’s API using the tidycensus package for R. Data was visualized using the ggplot package in R.
