Introduction

As a significant cause of death, suicide has gained more attention than ever in the past decade. Statistics on suicide are crucial for research aimed at identifying potential risks and finding preventive solutions. The following slides serve as an analysis of data published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) measuring international suicide rates by two major age groups and countries worldwide. Please note the data used in the presentation is updated until 16-07-2022. The plots included in the presentation can answer the questions listed below:

  1. Where do suicide commonly occur in terms of the countries?
  2. Which age group has the higher risk exposed to suicide?
  3. What can you do to help?

Countries with Large Populations

In order to inspect the dataset well, the following 10 countries with the most populations in the world were chosen in descending order:

## China
## India
## United States
## Indonesia
## Pakistan
## Brazil
## Nigeria
## Bangladesh
## Russian Federation
## Japan

10 Countries’ Actual Suicde

After choosing the 10 countries we wanted, let’s see how the results turn out for identifying their outliers for actual suicide. The y-axis represents the Actual Suicide.

Adding Age Group

Now we have two significant variables: Country and Actual Suicide in hand, next let’s take the two high risk age groups into account: 15-29 years and 30-49 years.

Identify Outliers of Two Variable

The following graphs serve to provide a further insight for two variables listed in original dataset: Suicide Rate and Actual Suicide. As you can see the patterns of two related variables are different.

Suicide Rate and Actual Suicide

The common sense of the higher the Suicide Rate, the higher the Actual Suicide won’t apply here in the 10 countries’ data according to the research.

Facts Check

Now you can check answers in your mind for the three questions listed earlier and know a little more here.

World

  • 70,0000 people die by suicide every year
  • 1 person die by suicide every 40 seconds
