Mental Health

PG Dip Nursing (Mental Health) not in line with YTD figures, being -151 down on apps, -15 down on offers. This means for accepts it is down by -4 but up by 3 on UFs YTD.

PG Dip MH Nursing 40 places and 46 offers - department confident we will meet target 20 have confirmed (CF) and 2 are Unconditional Firm 9 UF) There are a further 45 holding offers who have yet to accept or decline

BSc Nursing (Mental Health) has a higher number of apps, but has made less offers and as a result less accepts (-36) and -26 UFs. It has an target of 80 and the department are confident can meet that, as they have made 140 offers, with 23 booked in for interview.

PGDip Mental Health Practice received funding from HEE for 60 students and we have received notification that we will gain an additional 20 students next year for September 2023.

Social Work

MA Social Work is -9 YTD on accepts and in line with previous years of UFs, and PGDip Social Work is down -4 in offers and -4 in accepts, however there is growth of international students from 6 MA in 2022 to 20 for 2023 intake. A further 9 applicants are booked for interview and 21 invited who have not responded yet. The likely reason is that the Social Work bursaries have only recently been announced yet. We have been allocated the 3rd highest number (47), so MA/PG Dip applicants should start to respond to this, meaning given the numbers already accepted we should be confident of meeting the target.

Target of 50 with 20 international students, with programme leader investigating if additional 10 students to increase target to 60 is feasible given placement capacity issues. given accepts and international numbers department should be confident of meeting target.

Diane Apeah-Kubi and Lucille Allain are responding to a tender by Herts Council -TCV is £100,000 for 4-5 Pg Dip SWK students for commencement in Sep 2024. They come with placements and that (if we win) plus SWK Apps will build income.

BA Social work is down on applications but only -4 down on offers YTD and then only -2 and -1 down on accepts and UF respectively, department looking to take into clearing with aim to recruit to target of 50.

Apprenticeship figures:

  • BA Social Work Apprenticeship
    NEW for sept 2023 will have 25 NEW apprentices from 5 organisations as detailed below:

    • 8 are confirmed (Brent);
    • 17 are being interviewed this week (for 10 places with Greenwich)
    • 8 are being interviewed for Hounslow for 5 places 2nd week of June and
    • 3 are being interviewed for 2 places with C&NWL 3rd week in June.
    • 9 SWK App entering year 2 in Sep 2023
    • 1 SWK App entering year 3 in Sep 2023

PG programmes are mainly in line YTD

UG programmes show a big decline YTD. BSc Midwifery is -303 apps down, but is up 17 on offers made and therefore only -6 and -9 down on accepts and UFs YTD

BSc Nursing (Adult) -269 down on apps, and -101 down on offers, leading to -31 accepts and -24 Ufs as a result. These figures do not include the planned 60 international students, so this would improve these figure significantly.

BSc Nursing (Child) -144 apps down and - 35 offers, leading to -24 accepts but the UFs are +1 YTD.

Reductions in applications reflect national picture and department expect to go into clearing with Adult and meet target figures.

Apprenticeship figures:

  • Nursing Associate Apprenticeship
    • Department anticipating up to 70 Nursing Associates starting in Oct 2023.
    • Anticipate 70 more Nursing Associates from March 2024.
  • Nursing Degree Apprenticeship
    • 25 students starting the 2-year BSc Adult Nursing top up (start will be delayed to at least December, as NMC need to approve shortened pathway). This will include 4-5 who will come from UCLH (new provider for our BSc provision for Sept 2023) in addition to 20 students from the Royal Free.
    • This will be an increase of 7 additional students from the October 2022 cohort of BSc Adult Nursing top-up where we had 18 starters.

Our current PG per credit fee is £64.25

For a 30 credit module the fee would therefore be £19275.50

Therefore the total fees collected for the first intake of 200 students, would be:

£19275.50 x 200 = £385500

The proposed overhead charge is 25% of fees,

So the first year minimum income if the above targets are met would be £96,375

Year on year this figure will increase, as student progress from PGCert to PGDip to MSc.

However if all agreed in the MOC our first year income from the Gosh partnership will be £96,375 based on 200 students starting.

  • CAW
    • BSc Vet Nursing
      • This programme could be returning for Sept 2023 if they meet quality review targets.
      • For Sept 2023 the students would only be through clearing and to the Huntingdon site.
      • In previous years they have met the target of 20 for this site through a usual recruitment cycle.
      • 10 students onto the foundation programme through clearing if allowed would be a reasonable target.
      • Remaining provision would reopen for sept 2024 start if quality targets are met.

Future Provision

  • Two year MSc in Adult Nursing with NMC qualification,
    • Optional specialist pathway (critical care, primary care, social care or surgical care)
    • Targeting international students,
    • Competitors fees are 44K per year.
    • Current PG resources could be reconfigured with minimal extra costs.
  • MSc Advanced Assessment
    • Looking to run at Campuses.
    • Residential in London for students to experience Stone X and gain skills training.
    • This could also be accompanied by a variety of CPD modules such as critical care.
    • CPD could run as a forerunner in Jan 2024 and is being explored with teams.

Comments

PG programmes are mainly in line with YTD figures aside from the MA HE programme which benefited last year from the Chinese market allowance for DE course last year having cohorts of 35 and 40, does not exist any more. The department are looking to run this in on campus mode in January 2024 which Gurdip and his team are confident they will be able to recruit the international numbers required, with targets in line previous course figures.

UG programmes BA Early Childhood studies are down -43 on apps and therefore -14 down on accepts and -5 down on UFs YTD, this programme will enter clearing. The other programme which is highlighted is the BA primary education, which is down -38 YTD on apps, and -40 on offers, however the programme is up on accepts by 7 YTD which is encouraging and interviews are ongoing every week, this programme will also go into clearing to meet target.
