Wildfires in Chile - a time series aproach

The chilean vegetation includes a variety of climate zones, that’s why biodiversity is very high and with a lot of hot spots within the country. Despite that, almost 99% of the wildfires in the country are from human cause, intentional or by accident. The next plot shows how many surface were burned anually sinde 1977 to 2021. Because Chile is to south of Ecuador, the summer time here starts nearly in november to march, so the time series and the year includes since november of the year to march of the next year. The database were collected from national forestry corporation (CONAF).

The Number column indicates the total number of wilfires that were identified per season, Hectares is the surface affected, and the mean.area is the surface divided by the number of wildfires.

Conclusion

The number of wildfires has increased but the affected surface seems to be relativetly stable. The season 2016-2017 was extremely high in wildfires, and was a national emergency.
