The success of ChatGPT, which launched towards the end of 2022, marked a rapid foray of AI into many industries. However, notable challenges such as a lack of experts and strict regulation of data have limited implementation of AI innovations. The benefits of these potential innovations can already be seen in companies like the start-up BlueDot, whose algorithms detected COVID in Wuhan well before the United Nations issued a warning, or the Alphabet (Google) subsidiary DeepMind, whose AlphaFold model can accurately predict 3D models of protein structures.

Whether it’s document processing or patient recruitment for clinical trials, AI has the potential to accelerate research and development without being capital-intensive. It is essential that all companies, from start-ups to leaders, encourage experimenting with AI as well as push for data regulation that can support the use of AI in the industry.

Applications of AI in the Life-Sciences Industry

The article talks about a few major applications of AI in the industry, which are listed below.

My Thoughts about the Article

I was surprised to read that Artificial Intelligence is yet to make inroads in life-science industries, especially having read about how AI models such as AlphaFold have accelerated research and development in many companies. I second Mr. Vadakekkara’s call for obstacles such as data regulation and ambigous business goals to be mitigated. As someone interested in data collected as part of life-science problems, I would be interested in being a part of teams which try to incorporate AI into solving these problems, as well as become very versed in the data science that is core to this industry.
