Methodology
To ensure accurate and comprehensive data collection for this analysis, I implemented HTML web scraping as the methodology. Since Untappd, the source of the data, lacks a public API and enforces strict data controls through a Captcha, web scraping was the best option. However, with the data retrieval limit of 25 beers per brewery, I narrowed the scope of the analysis to four highly-regarded breweries in the Cincinnati area and their top 25 most popular beers.
By focusing on the Styles, Alcohol Content, number of reviews, and score this analysis aims to identify potential differences and patterns among the selected breweries. With this methodology, I sought to provide reliable insights into the qualities that make each brewery distinct, allowing for a more informed understanding of the Cincinnati beer scene.

Average Ratings
To set the stage for our data analysis, let’s first gain a deeper understanding of the breweries we’ll be exploring in Cincinnati. The selected four breweries for our investigation are MadTree Brewing, Rhinegeist Brewery, Fifty West Brewing, and Braxton Brewing. These four breweries are prominent players in the Cincinnati brewing scene, with a strong presence in local grocery and liquor stores. Given their reputation for producing top-quality beer, we can expect to see similar overall average scores across these breweries.
| Brewery | Average Score |
|---|---|
| MadTree Brewing Company | 3.74 |
| Rhinegeist Brewery | 3.73 |
| Braxton Brewing Company | 3.68 |
| Fifty West Brewing Company | 3.67 |
According to the results, MadTree Brewing Company has the highest average score of 3.7388, followed closely by Rhinegeist Brewery with an average score of 3.7336. Braxton Brewing Company and Fifty West Brewing Company have slightly lower scores with 3.6804 and 3.6736 respectively. Overall, these results suggest that the selected breweries produce similar quality beer, with MadTree Brewing Company and Rhinegeist Brewery slightly outperforming the other two breweries in terms of their average scores.
Number of Reviews
Let’s investigate the number of reviews for the top 25 beers of the brewery, as this may shed light on any potentially inflated or deflated average ratings| Brewery | Number of Reviews |

| Rhinegeist Brewery | 526330 |
| MadTree Brewing Company | 331096 |
| Braxton Brewing Company | 136584 |

Braxton Brewing Company and Fifty West Brewing Company received 136,584 and 86,228 reviews, respectively.
Comparing Style counts
The objective of this analysis is to investigate the variation in brewing styles across four different breweries. The aim is to identify if there are any discernible differences in the focus of each brewery on particular beer styles. For instance, it is possible that one brewery focuses more on producing Light and Crisp beers compared to the others.
| name | Hoppy | Light+Crisp | Malt | Tart | Unique |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Braxton Brewing Company | 6 | 5 | 3 | 3 | 8 |
| Fifty West Brewing Company | 6 | 2 | 7 | 3 | 7 |
| MadTree Brewing Company | 9 | 3 | 7 | 1 | 5 |
| Rhinegeist Brewery | 6 | 1 | 7 | 4 | 7 |
The results show that there are differences in the brewing styles across the four breweries analyzed. Braxton Brewing Company’s top 25 beers are dominated by Hoppy and Unique styles, suggesting that the brewery places a significant emphasis on experimentation and innovation in their brewing process. 50 West Brewing Company’s top 25 beers are characterized by a balance between Hoppy and Malty styles, indicating a focus on a range of flavor profiles. MadTree Brewing Company’s top 25 beers are also Hoppy and Malty, suggesting a similar focus on a range of flavors. Rhinegeist Brewery’s top 25 beers, on the other hand, are characterized by Malty and Unique styles, suggesting a focus on creating unique and distinct beers with complex flavor profiles.
Number of Reviews
In this analysis, my goal is to explore which brewing styles are the most engaging for users by examining the average number of reviews per style. By doing so, we can gain insights into which styles are more popular among consumers and potentially why they are more engaging.
| Style_Catagory | Average Number of Reviews |
|---|---|
| Hoppy | 15191 |
| Malt | 10174 |
| Tart | 9645 |
| Light+Crisp | 8548 |
| Unique | 8362 |
Based on the results, it appears that the Hoppy style category receives the highest average number of reviews, with an average of 15,191 reviews per beer. The Malt and Tart styles follow closely behind with an average of 10,174 and 9,645 reviews per beer, respectively. The Light+Crisp and Unique styles have a lower average number of reviews, with an average of 8,548 and 8,362 reviews per beer, respectively. Analysising ABV
ABV, short for Alcohol by Volume, is the magical potion that turns water into a party elixir. It’s the little number that tells you how much of a good time you can expect to have with each sip. The higher the ABV, the more potent the potion, and the merrier the festivities.
But in all seriousness, ABV is an important factor to consider when comparing beers across different breweries. It directly affects the strength and intensity of a beer’s flavor and can have a significant impact on your overall drinking experience. Knowing the ABV of different beers allows you to choose the right beer for the occasion and avoid accidentally overindulging. So, it’s always a good idea to check the ABV before taking that first sip!
ABV Across Catorgories
To provide context on the brewing styles, I decided to explore the average ABV across these styles.
After examining the average ABV across different beer styles, it appears
that Hoppy and Unique beers have the highest ABV, while Light and Crisp
as well as Tart beers have lower ABV on average.
ABV Across Breweries
This graph
clearly shows that MadTree has the highest average ABV among their 25
most popular beers. However, it is important to note that all four
breweries have an average ABV of around 6% among their top 25 beers.
This indicates that while MadTree may have some higher ABV options,
overall the breweries are relatively consistent in their alcohol
content.
Anaylsis of ABV Across Style
In this analysis, I will be examining the ABV (Alcohol By Volume) levels across different beer styles and exploring whether certain breweries stand out in terms of their average ABV. ABV can have a significant impact on a beer’s taste and strength, making it an important factor to consider when comparing different brews. By examining ABV data, we can gain insights into the brewing styles and preferences of different breweries and see how they compare to one another
This table shows the average ABV across different brewing styles for the
top breweries in the area. Braxton Brewing Company has the highest
average ABV for Hoppy and Malt styles. Meanwhile, MadTree Brewing
Company has the highest average ABV for the Tart and Unique styles. The
Light+Crisp style has the lowest average ABV across all breweries.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Untappd is a useful social networking app for beer enthusiasts, providing a platform to discover and rate different types of beers, and connect with like-minded individuals. For this analysis, the methodology involved HTML web scraping due to the unavailability of a public API and data control measures. The scope of the analysis was narrowed down to the top 25 most popular beers of four highly-regarded breweries in the Cincinnati area. The analysis aimed to identify potential differences and patterns among the breweries, and the results showed that the breweries produced high-quality beer with MadTree Brewing and Rhinegeist Brewery outperforming the other two breweries slightly. There were also discernible differences in the brewing styles among the breweries, with Braxton Brewing Company focusing on Hoppy and Unique styles, while Fifty West Brewing Company produced more Malt style beers. Overall, the analysis provided reliable insights into the qualities that make each brewery distinct, and this will be useful for people looking to explore the Cincinnati beer scene.
