Develop a visualization dashboard based on a series of data about your own life. The actual data used for this project can range from daily sleep regimes, TV shows watched, types of food eaten, spending habits, commute times to work, travel habits, to blood pressure and nutrient intake. The amount of data you collect and harvest will differ based on your specified objectives.
Ultimately the project must meet certain key objectives:
You must provide an written summary of your data collection, analysis and visualization methods, including the why you chose your methods, and what tools you utilized.
Your summary must outline ≥ 5 questions that can be evaluated using a data-driven approach. These questions should be more than just “How many miles did I run”, although a couple of your questions could be stated that way.
You must collect, manage, and store the data necessary for this visualization.
You must design and create an appropriate set of visualizations (try not to use just one type of visualization) within a dashboard/storyboard that provides insight into your specified questions, with a minimum of ≥ 1 interactive graphical element.
Create a dashboard using my credit card company’s (Chase) monthly statements for Fall 2022 (August - December).
The idea behind choosing my credit card statement was to learn more about my spending habits. I did have a sense of my spending, but using this dashboard to see my actual spending amounts in visual forms put reality to check. This initiative aims to expose any areas of needless expenditure so that I can better manage my finances.I could adjust my expenditures, regulate my budget, and boost my long-term savings as a result.
To answer my questions via the graphs:
Q1) What category do I spend the most money in? A1) By taking a look at the pie chart, we can instantly see the most spent category was in Shopping followed by Food & Drinks and the least spent was on Hotel expenses.
Q2) What day of the week do I spend most money? A2) Not surprisingly, I spend the most on a weekend i.e. Saturday. However, I was surprised to see it’s in close spending amounts with a Monday. Which I guess is true to an extent as I sometimes do my shopping that was not done during the weekend, during the weekdays.
Q3) How often do I use my credit card each month? A3) Each month has various spending amounts. Although there are always some fixed payments such as rent, electricity, wifi, mobile bill, etc. that were not included in this data set of mine. Keeping the fixed payments aside, looks like I spent the least in August as it was the start of the semester and I had just come back from home with a ton of things for free that lasted me for while. However, we do see I had a peak in spending during the holiday season Nov & Dec.
Q4) Any potential spending habits to change? A4) Based on the boxplot graph, I have understood my weak point to be shopping. I will now try to control my spending in this category to avoid such outliers in the future.
Q5) Do monthly transactions predict the future spending? A5) It is difficult to predict an exact future spending as month-month defers whether it is a holiday or birthday month, or just staying in at home month. But an average of $1,000 could be taken into account.
