Introduction
This report analyzes similarities between 50 upscale steakhouses and 50 sports bars that are all located in Cincinnati, Ohio. The data was collected from Yelp using the Yelp API, which we learned about in class.
Some of the variables that were collected include:
Name of Restaurant
Rating
Price
Review Count (number of reviews)
Latitude and Longitudinal coordinates
Address of establishment
Phone number of restaurant
Note: Both of the steakhouse and
sportsbar data frames were saved and stored as one .CSV
file.
Do steakhouses typically receive higher reviews on Yelp and sports bars?
This boxplot shows the median number of reviews that steakhouses get compared to the median number of reviews that sports bars get. As we can see, steakhouses typically received a higher number of reviews than sports bars. This is probably due to the fact that dining at a steakhouse is a noteworthy experience, so consumers feel more inclined to share whether their experience was a positive or negative one; whereas, dining at a sports bar is much more casual and usually requires very little thought.
Which restaurant type receives higher rating scores: steakhouses or sports bars?
This boxplot shows the median scores that consumers gave to steakhouses and sports bars on Yelp. It’s pretty interesting that both restaurant types received a median score of 4.0. Perhaps people unconsciously lower their standards when dining at a sports bar, so they are less critical in their evaluation of whether the experience was a positive one; whereas, the reverse is true for steakhouses. We can also see that the distribution of scores for steakhouses was more spread out.
Which restaurants, from this dataset, received the top 10 highest ratings on Yelp?
Higher Gravity was the only restaurant in the entire data set to receive a 5.0 score on Yelp! After looking at Higher Gravity’s website (found at https://highergravitycrafthaus.com) it appears that they host many fun events such as trivia night, partnerships with a local record store, and happy hours! There were many restaurants, predominantly sports bars, that received an overall Yelp score of 4.5, too.
