Smartphones are becoming ubiquitous, with nearly half the adult population owning one. However, the small screen size of most smartphones presents a challenge when typing: pressing each letter individually is error-prone, as the touch screen does not allow for as much accuracy as a physical keyboard.
Enter predictive texting: as you type, the next word in your sentence is predicted and, if selected, added into your text. The Urbane Dictionary is the latest in predictive text technology. It features:
The Urbane Dictionary uses a sample of millions to train its predictive models. This sample was obtained from a comprehensive collection of Tweets, blogs, and news articles in order to encompass the full range of human expressions. With this data, we clean the text of any non-word features (emoticons, numbers, etc.), then identify and rank the frequency of the most common combinations of word, called n-grams. The predictive algorithm selects the n-grams containing your text, ranks the options by n (i.e., trigrams are preferenced over bigrams) and by frequency, then delivers the top three results.
The function of the Urbane Dictionary app is far simpler: as you type, we continuously run your words through our algorithm in order to present you with the most likely next words. If you click on a suggestion, it is automatically added to your text! Note that we suggest three words, as we want to give you several likely options to choose from as you type.
As smartphone technology changes, predictive texting must change. The Urbane Dictionary is committed to continuously developing the most advanced predictive text application, incorporating more data, more data science, and more usability with every update.
