Supervision Information

Some general ideas about supervision

When seeking licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), it is important to have the guidance and support of a qualified supervisor. Therefore, supervision is crucial for several reasons. It offers a structured environment for skill development, ensures high professional standards and client safety, it supports the emotional well-being of counselors by helping them manage stress, and completing a specific number of supervised hours is a licensure requirement in most states.

It is important for aspiring LPCs to be aware of the different categories of supervision and supervisor requirements set forth by their state’s licensing board. This is because each state has its own specific requirements for becoming an LPC, including the number of supervision hours required, the qualifications of the supervisor, and the type of supervision that is acceptable.

Thus, different types of supervision may be required or preferred by different states. For example, individual supervision may be required in some states, while group supervision may be acceptable in others. Likewise, supervision can be provided on-site (in the same location where the supervisee works/sees clients) or off-site (in a different location than where the supervisee works).

Ultimately, the choice between on-site and off-site supervision, as well as group versus individual supervision, will depend on the needs and preferences of the supervisee, the availability of qualified supervisors, and economic considerations. It is important for supervisees to consider all of these factors when choosing a supervisor and a supervision format, and to ensure that they are receiving the support and guidance they need to become competent and ethical practitioners.

Because this can be a tedious process, this document is intended to facilitate the search for a supervisor who can meet the needs of those seeking licensure. The following will provide information on potential supervisors from different states. Good luck!

Recomendations

Christina Kuo

How did you find your supervisor? I reached out to Lapde So through the Penn Alumni Association, and then she asked me to join her private practice. I was a clinician at Mountainside Treatment Center, where Erin O’Neil was my direct supervisor. I feel very lucky and thankful to have both of them to be my supervisors.

What are the factors that, based on your experience, support a positive supervisory relationship? Open and transparent communication. Specific strategies and trainings to improve skills, they hold me accountable, support my plans and career paths by setting specific goals. They are also emotionally supportive when needed. Know our boundaries as supervisor and employee.

Are there any factors that, based on your experience, have resulted in a less than satisfactory supervisory relationship? Yes, a supervisor and work environment that is not reflective of their company statements, staff and supervisor who is not culturally aware. Supervisor who does not support my career paths.

What do you think are important factors to include when looking for a supervisor? Openness, culturally aware, supportive of my career paths and goals, boundaries.

What are the factors that, based on your experience, support a positive supervisory relationship? Frederick was knowledgeable, intelligent, warm, attuned, empathic, holistic and his expertise aligned with my professional counseling goals. Christopher Eric Bondy

What are the factors that, based on your experience, support a positive supervisory relationship? Rapport is essential, and a good starting place. Also, the supervisor should work to understand the strengths and areas for growth of the supervisee, and be willing to build on the former while pushing into and guiding the latter.

Are there any factors that, based on your experience, have resulted in a less than satisfactory supervisory relationship? Having someone that does not know about a specific therapy one utilizes leaves a gap in support that may require a therapist to seek a second supervisor that has that area of expertise.

Demeanor matters as well. I had a previous supervisor, not Michael Hoober, that intimidated people in group supervision so people did not like to offer ideas or pose questions.

What do you think are important factors to include when looking for a supervisor? Experience as a therapist, areas of expertise, and therapeutic outlook are all important factors.

Colleen Cacace

How did you find your supervisor? N/A

What are the factors that, based on your experience, support a positive supervisory relationship? Deanna was fantastic at helping to explore countertransference, grow my EMDR skills, and identifying patterns that clients were presenting with. She was also supportive in my professional exploration as I realized that specializing in EMDR isn’t a great fit for me and sought other trainings.

Are there any factors that, based on your experience, have resulted in a less than satisfactory supervisory relationship? N/A

What do you think are important factors to include when looking for a supervisor? General framework alignment feels critical. I found it especially helpful to work with a supervisor who specialized in an area I wanted to grow in.

Colleen Tate

How did you find your supervisor? My information has been passed via word of mouth through Penn professors

What are the factors that, based on your experience, support a positive supervisory relationship? I provide a safe space that allows the supervisee to feel comfortable to be vulnerable and explore/challenge their role as a clinician.

How did you find your supervisor? Facebook group for LPC in PA

What are the factors that, based on your experience, support a positive supervisory relationship? Ease of supervision (we talked on the phone once a week for 3 years and we could be doing things in our homes while we were talking), previous supervisor experience (I think I was her 4th or 5th), easy to talk to, helped me see common cognitive distortions I had, celebrated my growth and successes.

I also did group supervision in my 4th year with Kelly Kampf LCSW (when I didn’t need a LPC anymore and wanted a Gestalt group instead of indiv supervision). It was $125/3 hours with 4 other therapists -I absolutely loved hearing about their work because I’m not in private practice yet.

Are there any factors that, based on your experience, have resulted in a less than satisfactory supervisory relationship? She never quite understood what I was doing at my job because it was not really a school (it’s self-directed education and she always worked at conventional schools) but I accepted it because there were still things she could help me with, and I liked hearing about her job.

What do you think are important factors to include when looking for a supervisor? Ease of contact! It should be something that enhances your schedule, not a drag. Also, the supervisor should be able to comfortably redirect you to “why is [work problem] a problem for you?” rather than letting the venting go on forever. They should make an effort to understand you and your work. Also, you should want to learn about their approaches and training so you can have new insights. I learned so much from Kelly’s background in hospice and somatics.

How did you find your supervisor? I was working in community mental health at Youth Eastside Services and he was on staff and assigned to me

What are the factors that, based on your experience, support a positive supervisory relationship? As a therapist who works from an experiential framework, I find it really important to bring self-of-the-therapist issues into the supervisory relationship. There are differences between individual therapy and supervision, and sometimes the roles of a supervisor can feel similar to a therapist. I think a great supervisor provides mentorship, practical advice/frameworks for thinking through ethical issues and clinical concerns, and instills hope: both for the healing process of therapy and for the strength/ability of the supervisee.

Are there any factors that, based on your experience, have resulted in a less than satisfactory supervisory relationship? The agency I worked at had a policy that prohibited supervision outside of the agency (which may not have been legal?) and I think this created some of the ruptures between my supervisor and myself. When a supervisor is responsible for upholding work policies (e.g. direct service hour requirements) and also supporting/advocating for the supervisee, there can be conflicts of interest. I was also working in a setting that reimbursed services for behavioral therapy, and my supervisor had a very strict interpretation of behavior therapy that differed from my theoretical leanings and personal strengths as a clinician. There is a clear power dynamic in supervision, especially while working toward hours for licensure, and when this is not acknowledged directly it is difficult to form trust.

What do you think are important factors to include when looking for a supervisor? Much like finding an individual therapist, I think it is important to be aligned with theoretical orientations (within reason), awareness/humility around culture and intersecting identity, and the safety that comes with working with someone who is reliable/predictable/stable. Also with supervision, I find that an attitude of curiosity and appreciation for the challenges of this work is crucial. We rarely have situations with clear cut “correct” responses, and it is so much more about the process of becoming a therapist than the content of what is discussed in meetings.
