This API is designed to show the travel log of buses in Oahu, Hawaii. The data extracted shows each bus’ ID, trip ID, direction it is headed in, vehicle number, and estimated time of arrival. I have attached the link to the data dictionary below if you wish to view all the fields. Locals on the island could utilize this service to see the planned schedule for the buses in their area. Public transportation can be difficult to plan around, as delays and traffic can affect the estimated times of arrival for each bus. Bus riders can see the updated estimations and adjust their planned bus rides.

The setup is straight forward, as I have established an endpoint and have gained access to my unique api key. All users will need their own api key and a stop id they wish to see. Users can go to http://hea.thebus.org/api_info.asp to gain access to their unique api key. There is an api available for bus arrivals, vehicles, and routes. I have chosen to use the arrivals api, so please make sure to chose that api. There is also an option to use the XML and JSON files, so please use the JSON option. To find what street or stop id you wish to find, you can look it up at http://hea.thebus.org/default.asp?q=&c=Find+bus+stop. You will need to find the stop id in order to use the function built into this file, so please take the time to look at your most common stops.

The table below is an example of what information can be found after the user puts their api key and stop id. All users will have a different api key, but can chose whichever stop id they wish to view. I have chosen South King Street and University Avenue, or stop id “2107” to illustrate the results. It is important to note that the “stopTime” is in Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time, so they are 5-6 hours behind Eastern Standard Time depending on the time of year. After typing in my api key and stop id into the function, these are the results that can be found.
