Building VACS Data Visualization Platform using Power BI

Ermias Amene
Epidemiologist, VACS Data Analysis and Programming Team

Presentation Outline

  • Objective

  • VACS data repository(storage)

  • VACS Final Reports

  • Input Data Preparation

  • Demo (Power BI)

Objective

  • To develop data visualization platform for the VACS reports.

  • To make the data viz platform accessible to the public.

The VACS Final Data

  • The final data are available in SAS format

  • PUD available 3 years after the release of final report

  • Final reports are released through the TFG website

  • Currently the VACS data (raw) are stored in the Sharedrive

  • Access to the data is Restricted

Final Tables

  • Available as soon as data analysis is completed.

  • Can be available in word or excel formats.

  • Accessible to the public after the final report has been released.

  • The final tables are used as an input data for visualizing indicators.

Power BI

  • Free (corporate license).

  • Easy to develop reports.

  • Can connect to multiple databases.

  • Can be integrated with R for diverse visualization options*

  • Deploy and distribute within CDC network without any hurdle

  • Can be externally deployed for the public (require clearance).

Discussion points

  • What improvements can be implemented?

    • Layout?
    • Additional data to display?
  • Challenge in extracting data from reports

    • SAS macro?
    • Excel?

Thank you!
