Winter 2023
Our project’s main question will focus on analyzing the weather conditions on Mars. This question is important because understanding the weather conditions on a different planet such as Mars will give us more insight into the potential of life in places other than Earth. To address this question, we will be analyzing how the minimum and maximum temperatures, pressure, and atmospheric opacity trends over time since Curiosity landed on Mars in order to draw a conclusion on what the weather looks like on Mars.

Our project will be analyzing a dataset containing the solar longitude, minimum and maximum temperatures, pressure, and atmospheric opacity of Mars over Martian and Earth times. To answer our main question of what Mars’ weather conditions are like, we will be more specifically investigating:
There has been much debate and exploration over the question of if life is possible on Mars over the years. While this analysis will not necessarily prove if this assertion is true, analyzing the weather conditions on Mars is an important and vital step to possibly answering this question. Thus, we decided to chose to focus on these questions specifically because we found it fascinating to learn and share about the weather conditions on another planet like Mars. Being able to understand Mars’ weather conditions could also bring insight to how we understand our own weather conditions on Earth. We were also curious to see if Mars’ weather conditions had any similiarties and differences compared to the Earth we live on. Our goal is to hopefully help others become fascinated by the notion of an extraterrestial planet like Mars having weather and different seasons

An analysis of this dataset would provide a more comprehensive view on the environments and conditions on Mars, which can help technologists, designers, and policymakers determine the amount of funding that is input into space research programs, such as NASA. A comprehensive view of this has implications beyond just simply finding out the weather on Mars—it can allow for a comparison between the conditions faced in Earth and the conditions faced in Mars. Due to the deteriorating health of Earth today from greenhouse gases, deforestation, pollution, etc…, a consideration for a more viable option for human habitation may be necessary for the future of human kind. Although an analysis of this specific dataset is not nearly enough for a consideration for the possibility of human habitation on Mars, designers can use this concise method of comparing the weathers between Earth and Mars and expand further upon them, and technologists may want to update and implement more relevant technologies for space research, perhaps including an updated design for future rovers to collect more data more efficiently. Scientists and world leaders may benefit from a proper analysis of the conditions of Mars if Earth is no longer a viable option for human life.
Analyzing data about Mars’ weather conditions creates some major challenges and limitations. For one, it is incredibly expensive to collect this data, as space research can cost billions of dollars. Because this process also takes a long time since we have to wait years to collect weather data in order to draw conclusions about seasons and cycles, this can create a less comprehensive data analysis with what we currently are able to analyze. Moreover, as previously mentioned, Curiousity collects all the data from the southern hemisphere, which may create some ambiguity when trying to extrapolate an interpretation about Mars’ entire global weather conditions. Finally, as addressed in the limitations portion of the dataset, one last challenge concerns the accuracy and variation of the data. It’s already expensive to have one rover collect data as is, but it creates questions about how accurate the data could be since Curiousity is only able to collect information from one location, instead of averaging out the same data points from maybe different rovers from different locations in the same general area. This would help to reduce the variation in the dataset caused by the rover’s inconsistencies, such as taking measurements during different times of the day, or dust deposition.
Our analysis revealed that over the 1977 sols, or Martian days observed, the maximum temperature difference is 85 degrees Celsius which occurred during month 7, while the minimum temperature difference is 45 degrees Celsius, which occurred during month 3. The highest temperature recorded during one Martian day was 11 degrees Celsius, which was observed during month 7, while the lowest temperature observed is -90 degrees, which occurred during month 3. Finally the average atmospheric pressure on Mars overall is 841.0664167 pa, with month 9 having the highest pressure of 925 pa and with month 5 having the lowest pressure of 727 pa.
| Month | Average Minimum Temperature | Average Maximum Temperature | Average Temperature Difference | Average Pressure |

| 1 | -77.2 | -15.4 | 61.7 | 862.5 |
| 2 | -79.9 | -23.4 | 56.5 | 889.5 |
| 3 | -83.3 | -27.7 | 55.6 | 877.3 |

| 5 | -79.3 | -16.7 | 62.6 | 748.6 |
| 6 | -75.3 | -7.8 | 67.5 | 745.1 |

| 8 | -68.4 | -0.6 | 67.8 | 873.8 |
| 9 | -69.2 | -2.2 | 66.9 | 913.3 |
| 10 | -72.0 | -3.3 | 68.7 | 887.3 |
| 11 | -72.0 | -4.2 | 67.8 | 857.0 |
| 12 | -74.5 | -7.9 | 66.5 | 842.2 |
This table shows aggregate information of mars’ average weather conditions by each of the twelve months, ordered numerically. We thought that this grouping was interesting to view how the average minimum and maximum temperature (measured in Celsius), as well as pressure varies, or doesn’t vary month by month. By finding the average temperature differences between the average minimum and maximum temperatures, we were able to see that temperature on Mars varies extensively each day throughout the 12 month cycle. Some other insights, is how average pressure on Mars varies somewhat more during months 5-9 compared to the rest of the months.

The graph shows the seasonal temperature changes on Mars from 2012-2018. The y-axis of the graph represents temperature in degrees Celsius, while the x-axis represents the date, incremented in 6 month intervals from 2012 to 2018. The graph shows clear, consistent fluctuations in temperature over time, with the average temperature on Mars ranging from about -60 degrees Celsius to about -20 degrees Celsius.
Understanding the seasonal temperature changes on Mars is important for several reasons. First, it can provide insight into the planet’s climate and weather patterns, which can help scientists better understand the planet’s geology and potential habitability. It can also help assist in the planning of future missions to Mars, as extreme temperature changes can affect spacecraft and equipment and a general understanding of the conditions on Mars is crucial. Finally, studying the seasonal temperature changes on Mars can provide important information for understanding its relationship and similarities with Earth. With an increasingly deteriorating condition of the atmosphere and land on Earth, it is helpful to have an understanding of alternate human habitable planets.
