Directions

In this chapter we discussed why well-designed data graphics are important and we described a taxonomy for understanding their composition.

The objective of this assignment is for you to understand what characteristics you can use to develop a great data graphic.

Each question is worth 5 points.

To submit this homework you will create the document in Rstudio, using the knitr package (button included in Rstudio) and then submit the document to your Rpubs account. Once uploaded you will submit the link to that document on Canvas. Please make sure that this link is hyper linked and that I can see the visualization and the code required to create it.

Question #1

Answer the following questions for this graphic Relationship between ages and psychosocial maturity

  1. Identify the visual cues, coordinate system, and scale(s)

  2. How many variables are depicted in the graph? Explicitly link each variable to a visual cue that you listed above.

  3. Critique this data graphic using the taxonomy described in the lecture.

  4. Position, length, color, direction, area and Cartesian systems of coordinates scales of time.

  5. Two factors are at play. Both menarche and psychological maturation occur during adolescence. They made use of location on two axes at once. Age is represented by their relative length over a given time period. the colors serve as identifiers. Indicating long term changes in endocrine and metabolic process, the direction of these variables is commonly used. as time progressed, so did the relative sizes of the two variables.

  6. In my opinion the use of color to differentiate between the two factors is fantastic but the position visual cue makes it difficult to read and compare bar’s length with other. i would rather use box plot.

Question #2

Answer the following questions for this graphic World’s top 10 best selling cigarette brands 2004-2007

  1. Identify the visual cues, coordinate system, and scale(s)

  2. How many variables are depicted in the graph? Explicitly link each variable to a visual cue that you listed above.

  3. Critique this data graphic using the taxonomy described in the lecture.

  4. Color, length and Cartesian coordinate system linear scale.

  5. The cigarette brand and total sales volume are two independent variables. sales for a given brand are represented by the length of the bar. Brands use color to set themselves apart from one another.

  6. To sum up graph is decent but one should be careful while selecting the hues. The color used for Marlboro should be different shade from winston’s because they come from different manufacturers and the sales values can be represented on bars so it will be easy to understand.

Question #3

Find two data graphics published in a newspaper on on the internet in the last two years.

  1. Identify a graphical display that you find compelling. What aspects of the display work well, and how do these relate to the principles that we have just gone over in lecture. Include a screenshot of the display along with your solution (Hint:use the following in a code chunk: knitr::include_graphics(“your_graphic”).
knitr::include_graphics("/Users/darklord/Desktop/Heat index forecast.png")

The above graph shows heat index forecast of Friday across different states in USA. It used a same color in different shades to differentiate the heat levels in different states. it uses geographical coordinate system and the content is given on the top of graph. All the necessary components of a graph are here, and the information is conveyed to the reader in an engaging way. Its uncluttered, straightforward and simple to grasp.

  1. Identify a graphical display that you find less compelling. What aspects of the display don’t work well? Are there ways that the display might be improved? Include a screenshot of the display along with your solution (Hint:use the following in a code chunk: knitr::include_graphics(“your_graphic”).
knitr::include_graphics("/Users/darklord/Desktop/Career points by age for top 250 scorers.png")

The above graph has too much of information and there is no proper use of colors. it uses Cartesian coordinate system but haven’t displayed axis properly. In this graph, it is difficult to read the data for a single player, making it difficult to read.

Question #4

Briefly (one paragraph) critique the designer’s choices. Would you have made different choices? Why or why not? Note: Link contains a collection of many data graphics, and I don’t expect (or want) you to write a full report on each individual graphic. But each collection shares some common stylistic elements. You should comment on a few things that you notice about the design of the collection.

What is a Data Scientist

Answer: A designers use of palettes is good and uniform. A great deal of background information is provided to illuminate the chart. color, size, numbers and angle are visual cues. Good use of visual cues in the form of angle and color are employed in the donuts chart but in the absence of reading the data labels determining the highest percentage is a challenge. I find bar charts to be the most straightforward and useful because of their widespread use. I favor using a horizontal bar chart ordered from the highest to lowest percentage. In the third graph the data is displayed by just numbers and little color differences which is not apparent without reading the labels, making this chart less than ideal for presenting the results visually. And same thing goes with the final chart. For graph four and seven there is good use of percentage bar charts.

Question #5

Briefly (one paragraph) critique the designer’s choices. Would you have made different choices? Why or why not? Note: Link contains a collection of many data graphics, and I don’t expect (or want) you to write a full report on each individual graphic. But each collection shares some common stylistic elements. Charts that explain food in America

Answer: The majority of visuals rely on the geographic coordinate system and the use of color to convey information. The author provide adequate background information to ensure that the visualization was fully comprehended by the reader. In the first graph there is good use of pictures which made easy for readers to understand whats happening in agriculture industry. Maps that use arbitrary color schemes to denote categories, however, can be a little difficult to read. To improve it, i would use variants of the same color. In the second chart there is no proper representation of y axis. In graph 10 the visualization can be improved by adding the values on the each bar same goes with graph 22. The crop cash inflows were visualized using a pie chart i would like to use the histograms with proper numbers on that will be easy to understand. I may make use vertical bar charts for graph 24,26 & 36 which will be easy to read. For graph 20 i choose to use bar graphs by changing the axes year to y and the source as x and will present the calories consumed values on the bars.
