Question #1
Answer the following questions for this graphic Relationship between ages and psychosocial maturity
knitr::include_graphics("http://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S1043276005002602-gr2.jpg")
Coordinate system: Cartesian coordinate system (x,y).The graph uses a rectangular coordinate system, where the x-axis and y-axis intersect at the bottom left corner of the graph. The x-axis is the independent variable and is positioned horizontally along the bottom of the graph. The y-axis is the dependent variable and is positioned vertically along the left side of the graph. Scale: The x-axis represents time in years and is scaled to range from 0 to 20 years in increments of 10 years. The y-axis represents time in backward years on a logarithmic scale from 20,000 years ago to present date.
#Answer) There are 4 pairs of variables listed in the graph. 1) Each 4 belong to both mearche (green bar) and psychosocial maturation (pink bar). 2) Age on the X-axis vertically. 3) Time on the y-axis horizontally. 4) The lines on the graph indicating their growth.
#Answer) Function: The function of the graph is clear i.e. to show a change in the menarche and physiological maturation. However, this could be improved by having the title and axis lables to be more descriptive. A title would have helped understand the context of the data better. Form: It is a line graph with multiple lines and bars representing menarche and physiological maturation through time. We notice that these two take place at a similar time, but after 200 years ago, physiological maturation takes place at a higher age than menarche.
Question #2 Answer the following questions for this graphic World’s top 10 best selling cigarette brands 2004-2007
knitr::include_graphics("https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2695/4149541331_482fbb0aaf_o.png")
Q2a) Identify the visual cues, coordinate system, and scale(s) #A)Visual cues: Title/Heading as World’s Top 10 best selling cigarette brands - 2004-2007 Color - Each brand has its own color Numerics - Each brand makes a different sale
Coordinate system: Cartesian coordinate system (x,y).
Scale: The Y-Axis represents each brands name. The X-Axis represents the amount of sales in billion dollars each brand makes.
Q2b) How many variables are depicted in the graph? Explicitly link each variable to a visual cue that you listed above. #A) There are two variables. The cigarette brand on the y-axis and the sales in billions on the x-axis.
Q2c) Critique this data graphic using the taxonomy described in the lecture. #A) As we can see in the graph, the cigarette brand Marlboro made the highest sales of around $470MM. Although, we do not know what year this exactly happened in between 2004-2007. While the brand, Wills Gold Flake, made the least amount of sales around $40MM.
Question #3 Find two data graphics published in a newspaper on on the internet in the last two years.
Q3a. Identify a graphical display that you find compelling. What aspects of the display work well, and how do these relate to the principles that we have just gone over in lecture. Include a screenshot of the display along with your solution (Hint:use the following in a code chunk: knitr::include_graphics(“your_graphic”).
knitr::include_graphics("C:/Users/apoor/Downloads/1833.jpeg")
#A) Referenced from the Statista
website online. This graph has its variables clearly mentioned i.e. the
title of the line chart, a sub title of the chart to give the viewers a
better understanding of the data as well as clear points mentioning the
TV viewership number for each year. The X-Axis has the TV viewership in
millions, while the Y-axis has the years from 1991 to 2013 displayed.
The background image of the graph adds a visual appeal when reading and
understanding the graph. Based off the graph, we can tell the highest TV
viewership of around 111MM was seen in the year 2011. The only thing to
improve would be to add the X-axis and Y-axix lables even though it is
understood without it based off the sub-title.
Q3b. Identify a graphical display that you find less compelling. What aspects of the display don’t work well? Are there ways that the display might be improved? Include a screenshot of the display along with your solution (Hint:use the following in a code chunk: knitr::include_graphics(“your_graphic”).
knitr::include_graphics("C:/Users/apoor/Downloads/fenty.jpg")
#A) This is a graph that represents the sales the brand Fenty has made in the year 2016 and 2017 against it’s competitors such as Too Faced, Kylie Cosmetics, etc. I found this graph to be a bit compelling to comprehend simply because the amounts were difficult to interpret for each month. The side table only outlined the September month’s sales. However, if one were to read the sales made by Fenty in July 2017, it would have to be a guess of around 38MM, but again even the scale used on the Y-axis is hard to interpret.
Question #4
Briefly (one paragraph) critique the designer’s choices. Would you have made different choices? Why or why not? Note: Link contains a collection of many data graphics, and I don’t expect (or want) you to write a full report on each individual graphic. But each collection shares some common stylistic elements. You should comment on a few things that you notice about the design of the collection.
#Answer: The graphic is somewhat ambiguous and difficult to read for people who are not familiar with the specific data analysis process being depicted. It would have been helpful for the designer to include more labels and descriptions to help the reader understand what each step represents and how they relate to each other.The graphic uses a limited color palette that is mostly blue and green. While this can be effective in creating a cohesive visual style, it may not be as effective in communicating the different elements of the analysis process. Adding additional colors or using color to highlight specific elements could help make the graphic more legible and easier to understand.
Question #5 Briefly (one paragraph) critique the designer’s choices. Would you have made different choices? Why or why not? Note: Link contains a collection of many data graphics, and I don’t expect (or want) you to write a full report on each individual graphic. But each collection shares some common stylistic elements. You should comment on a few things that you notice about the design of the collection.
Charts that explain food in America
#Answer: I liked the interactive graphs used here to learn about the food culture in each region. The layout of the graphic is clear and easy to navigate, with each region of the country represented by a distinct color. However, some of the labels and annotations are quite small and difficult to read, particularly on smaller screens. The designer could have made these elements larger or used a more legible typeface to improve readability. The use of data visualization in the graphic is effective, particularly the use of proportional symbols to represent the prevalence of different foods in each region. However, some of the data can be difficult to interpret, particularly in the scatter plot that shows the relationship between different types of cuisine. The designer could have provided more information or labeling to help the reader understand the data more clearly.
