Introduction to College Scorecard Data
This dataset contains information regarding universities (both public and private), trade schools, community colleges, etc. The table has tracked details such as locations, admission rate, total amount of undergraduate students, cost of attendance, average faculty salary, percentages of male and female, and much more.
| Average Undergrad Population | Unique Institutions | Average Faculty Salary |
|---|---|---|
| 2426.058 | 6981 | 6617.128 |
In the table above, I wanted to know some basic calculations about the data. The first calculation I was curious about was the average undergrad throughout the dataset. Building off of that first calculation, I also wanted to know how many uniqie institutions were found in the dataset. The final observation I wanted to see was the average faculty salary. I was surprised by the last calculation, as 6.6K seems like a very low average.
Does Cost of Attendance have a relationship with Average Faculty Salary?
In the scatterplot above, we see as cost of attendance increases, so does family income. I also included the three types of universities as a color to see the pattern within the three categories. I think it is interesting that public universities are much more brunched together as compared to the private universities, which display a much wider range.
