Positive/ Negative aspects of the Hate crimes Dataset
One positive aspect of this dataset is that it has a wide scope and
coverage. The hate crimes dataset identifies the many diverse groups
that are in New York’s population. The wide scope of the dataset can
also be interpreted as negative. The large amount of information would
make analysis difficult to analyze unless reduced to meaningful points
using clustering.
List 2 Different paths that you would like to (hypothetically) study
about this dataset.
Path 1: I would like to understand how the NY counties populations
self identify into the different groups; what percentage of the county’s
population identify as one or more of the marginalized groups.
Path 2: I would like to see a comparison of hate crimes against
LGBTQ black women and heterosexual black women.
Describe 2 things you would do to follow up after seeing the output
from the hate crimes tutorial.
To follow up with this study, I would like to research the
collection method for this dataset, specifically how the data was
collected and how was it measured. I would also dissect the objectives
of the data and the organizer that produced it because the purpose of
the data is not identified. Additionally, I would like to see local
current events articles specifically from the years that saw a spike in
hate crimes against certain groups to give context to the figures.
