Background

Participants read about one of five situations: Tenant-landlord, contractor, car trade-in, job negotiation, and antique sale.
Then, they got one of three pieces of advice: deal-term related advice, demeanor related advice, and information related advice.

The advice is where the manipulation of label happened. These are the three pieces of advice:
Deal Terms
The approach you take with your [LABEL] is crucial for your success in this negotiation. With this [LABEL], I suggest you think very carefully in advance about your limits. What’s the worst deal you could still live with from this [LABEL]? At what point would you be better off walking away and pursuing another [OP]? That’s your limit. Keep this limit in your mind when bargaining with your [LABEL].
Demeanor
The approach you take with your [LABEL] is crucial for your success in this negotiation. With this [LABEL], I suggest you think very carefully about what impression you want to convey. How do you want this [LABEL] to see you as a negotiator? You should consider the specific behaviors you could display that would have the biggest impact on your [LABEL]’s impression. How your [LABEL] sees you and feels about you can make a huge difference.
Information
The approach you take with your [LABEL] is crucial for your success in this negotiation. With this [LABEL], I suggest you think very carefully in advance about what information you want to seek and what you want to share. What should you try to learn from this [LABEL] that could help you? What might the [OP] ask you during the negotiation … and how should you respond? Prepare in advance for the back and forth conversation with your [LABEL].

Then, we asked them to apply the advice to the situation in 1-2 sentences. And then, they completed the behavioral likert scales.

Main DV’s

As a reminder, we asked participants to rate the following behaviors on three dimensions: (1) How likely they are to behave that way in this scenario (alpha = 0.62); (2) How likely their OP is to behave that way in this scenario (alpha = 0.78); and (3) How effective will the behavior be in this scenario (alpha = 0.69).

1. Trying to mislead or misdirect my [LABEL]
2. Being transparent, readily sharing truthful information with my [LABEL] (R)
3. Acting in a tough, aggressive way toward my [LABEL]
4. Acting in a friendly, warm way toward my [LABEL] (R)
5. Trying to anchor the negotiation in my favor by putting forth a bold and extreme proposal
6. Pursuing a deal by offering my [LABEL] a proposal that is favorable to them (R)

Components of behaviors

First, let’s break down our DV’s. Each DV has three components: Deceitfulness, Demeanor, Deal-term making. Let’s see the items again before jumping in.

Deceitfulness:
1. Trying to mislead or misdirect my [LABEL]
2. Being transparent, readily sharing truthful information with my [LABEL] (R)

Demeanor:
3. Acting in a tough, aggressive way toward my [LABEL]
4. Acting in a friendly, warm way toward my [LABEL] (R)

Deal-term making:
5. Trying to anchor the negotiation in my favor by putting forth a bold and extreme proposal
6. Pursuing a deal by offering my [LABEL] a proposal that is favorable to them (R)

R indicates that the item is reverse-scored

Efficacy

After these behavior measures, we asked participants two efficacy questions:

1. At the beginning of the study, you read about a situation entailing [SITUATION]. If you faced this situation and hadn’t received any further advice, how sure would you be about how to handle the negotiation? (1 to 4)
2. In general, to what extent do you see yourself as an experienced and effective negotiator? (1 to 5)

Distribution of the first item:

And this is the distribution by scenario:

Open-text responses

After the advice and right before the behavior likert scales, participants wrote a couple of sentences in response to the following prompt:
How would you best apply this expert advice to your upcoming negotiation with the [LABEL]? Please provide a brief description of 1-2 sentences.

label sit_char adv_char behav_open
opponent tenant demeanor I would just state the facts to the property manage and ask for a timeline of when to get it fixed. I would only go to the “negotiation” phase if they refused or were not meeting the timeline. I would also assess how much damage is done and at what cost.
counterpart car dealterm I would ask a higher price for selling my car or lower payments.
counterpart car dealterm I would determine the highest acceptable price for the new car as well as the lowest acceptable offer for my trade-in. I would base my willingness to accept an offer based on those two values.
opponent antiques demeanor I would act as though I don’t care about selling the items quickly. The buyer seemed excited so they probably want the items.
partner car information I would look at other dealerships to see if there’s a similar make/model to what I test-drove and see what the price was. Use it for bargaining. I would also see what my current car is apprised for and look for similar cars for sale.
opponent antiques demeanor I would try to appear confident and like I know more about antiques than I do.
partner tenant information When negotiating with the property manager I would be sure to implement some of the advice I read in hopes of reaching a higher salary offer.
counterpart contractor demeanor The advice doesn’t really tell me to do something. It’s not great and doesn’t help me. I would probably leverage my feelings and mask them, to keep the contractor out of the knowledge of that, but it doesn’t help
counterpart job information I would prepare for the meeting by thinking about my goals for the session. I would also plan out what I was going to say.
opponent tenant demeanor I would show up prepared with all the facts of the situation, as well as all the legal facts. This way the landlord understands that I have done my due diligence ahead of time.
opponent contractor demeanor Based on this advice I would want to appear stern and like I understand what they are saying and cannot be taken for a fool. I would tell them a fair price based on what other companies could offer me, and see how they respond. If I take the lead I will feel more confident.
opponent car dealterm I would research the value of both the new car I’m interested in purchasing as well as my current car I am looking to sell. I would then think carefully about my “limit” and decide on the lowest price I am willing to accept for my current car before I would walk away from the deal.
partner contractor demeanor I would try to negotiate the price with them. By starting with a super low price
counterpart antiques dealterm I would state the lowest amount I would be willing to accept
counterpart antiques demeanor I would do some more research and walk in there with some knowledge about the objects I’m trying to sell. I would have proof of the higher prices that I want for the items when I go back.
partner contractor dealterm I would think of in my budget what is the absolute most I can be comfortable paying. I would then negotiate with the contractor accordingly.
counterpart job demeanor I would be prepared to not get everything that I am wanting, yet at the same time I would stand my ground on what I believe I deserve. If I knew I could make more money elsewhere, I would start with that, and figure out whether I valued my pay rate or my ability to work from home more.
counterpart job demeanor I would start off by asking is there any way they could raise the starting salary a little more because I was expecting a little more with my qualifications. Then I would mention that the hiring manager said that remote work was a possibility but on the offer email it stated that it wasn’t a possibility, and I was really looking for something that offered this option. thanks
opponent car dealterm I would figure out the highest price that I was willing to pay, first. Then go in and ask for something below this. Hopefully they will be willing to move on their price.
partner job dealterm I would try to not let the hiring manager see my disappointment with the initial offer. I would stay confident and try to move that number up to something I am comfortable with.
opponent antiques information I would apply that carefully as that came from someone who is good at negotiations. It would increase my chance of winning the bargain
counterpart tenant dealterm I would decide what I am willing to take and what I will not stand for. For example, if I insist that the water damage is fixed that means I will move if it is not.
opponent car information I would not back down on the price I am seeking for the purchase and what I would receive on my car so I would go back and thank the sales person for his offer but if this was his best offer then I would have to seek another car dealer who could do better and be prepared to walk out the door unless ….
partner job information I would prepare a list of things I would want to know from the hiring manager. I would prepare for back and forth conversations.
opponent car dealterm Based on the expert’s advice I would have a definite number that never changes. If the dealer insists on a higher number I will immediately walk away. It’s not like this is the only dealership in the world. I will very easily leave the bargaining table
counterpart tenant information I would start with my outstanding record as a tenant. I would have an estimate of the damages and ask for a time frame for the repairs.
opponent contractor demeanor Just make sure the contractor isn’t trying to get the best of me and hold my ground to ensure that I get the proper job done at the best rate.
opponent job dealterm I would stand fast on what I wanted in terms of money and teleworking. If I knew there were better offers that I could get, I wouldn’t lower my requirements for the HR guy just to make sure he made me an offer.
partner contractor demeanor I would apply it be showing I’m knowledgeable about price and contractors other reviews
opponent antiques dealterm I would have to think about the lowest amount I could accept form the trader, and also think of an opening offer to set the frame of the negotiation.
counterpart tenant information I would check my lease to see what it says about pests, if anything. I would avoid talking about the pantry items, they might try to blame me for attracting the mice. I would not expect a credit on my rent, landlords don’t do that. I would expect the hole repaired in a timely matter, and the radiator fixed so it doesn’t cause further damage.
partner car demeanor I would act like I have other options to choose from and that I’m not in a rush to sale or buy another car. I would make them feel like I’m doing them a favor by going to their dealership and that I can and will take my business elsewhere if I don’t get a deal that benefits me.
counterpart antiques information I would focus on gathering information about the true value of the items and keeping my responses measured during the negotiation. I would also prepare in advance for potential questions and conversations with the antique trader to increase my chances of achieving a favorable outcome.
counterpart tenant information I would review the terms of my lease to understand any applicability to mice activity and identify the specific outcomes I would accept.
opponent antiques information I will do research before visiting the trader. I will right down questions that I want to ask.
partner contractor dealterm the homeowner should identify their minimum acceptable deal and have it in mind during the negotiation with the contractor. This will help the homeowner make informed decisions and determine when it’s better to walk away from the deal if the contractor’s offer falls below their limit.
partner contractor dealterm My partner and I would discuss the pros and cons of taking on this project and agree on the budget limit we are willing to work it. During the negotiation with the contractor, we would want to know the risks involved.
partner tenant information My focus in property management will be on the partnership basis
partner job information I would try to negotiate with them and make sure they understand my requirements.
partner contractor demeanor I would choose my words wisely, to be sure they don’t make a false impression of my knowledge. I would avoid coming off as if I know nothing, that way they can’t think they will be able to charge more than I know the work is worth.
partner contractor demeanor I would be very friendly and act like i know exactly what is needed. I would ask the important questions right away and make sure they answer honestly.
opponent contractor information I think I would keep my cards close to my chest during the interaction with the contractor
opponent contractor information I would use the advice to listen carefully to what the contractor says and then use that in my negotiations.
counterpart antiques information Research what factors would increase the value of the items. During the negotiation, try to get the dealer to tell you which of these factors is or is not present in the items.
counterpart job demeanor I would apply this advice by thinking of the type of impression I want to make
partner job information I would consider what information I’m asking for and sharing. I would think carefully about my answers during the negotiation.
opponent antiques dealterm I would bargain in increase of price
counterpart tenant demeanor I would prepare to be reasonable but assertive. My request to repair the apartment is in fact very fair, so it’s just a matter of properly conveying the situation and requested repairs.
partner car information I would prepare my strategy in advance and prepare talking points. I would think of my lowest price I’ll take for trade-in
counterpart job demeanor would approach calmly while leveraging my experience to edge me
partner job dealterm the expert advice seem to be professional and would assist my negotiation with the HR. ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DISCUSS IT AS IT RELATES TO MY WELL BEING AND BETTER WORK PLACE EFFICIENCY
counterpart tenant dealterm I am a fighter and deserve to live in a healthy environment. I would let my counterpart know that I will not allow this situation to go unaddressed and will take legal action if needed.
partner tenant demeanor I would say the convenience of the apartment is great but there is a major problem that needs correction immediately of mice infestation.
partner car demeanor I would go back to the dealership with a counter offer that included my old car into the total price of the new car.
opponent car information I would think about the experts advice properly, then when i go back for the negotiation i would try to bargain higher for the sale of my current car. And i would also try to reduce the price for the car I would want to buy.
counterpart antiques demeanor I would not want to seem overly hostile because then I think the trader could shut down and refuse to offer me more money. I would try act firm about considering other options, but would also try to be conciliatory so that we could work towards the best deal possible for me.
opponent contractor information I would make a list of any and all possible questions/comments that may arise and my responses to them.
opponent tenant information I would let the property manager know about the damage to the wall that was caused by the leaking radiator and caused mice an entry way into the apartment. I would let them know about the food thatw as damaged and had to be thrown away because of the mice and that this wouldn’t have happened if there was proper mainetence on the leaky radiator. I would also ask for a check for mold to make sure there was none present from the water damage. I would let them know that if this is not repaired I would take the matter to higher authorities and report them.
partner tenant dealterm I would figure out what I want and what I am willing to accept in this negotiation. My end goal would be having the issues repaired, the credit would be nice but I at least want the issue fixed. if it won’t be fixed that would be my breaking point in the situation.
opponent contractor information I would think about how much I have available to spend. I would then talk with my friend about negotiation techniques.
partner antiques demeanor I would try to apply this expert advice when negotiating on pretty much everything. I would ask for the lowest price and then go up/
counterpart job dealterm Probably make sure everyone on same page and same mindset during negotiations to make sure each party is understanding and amenable to each other’s demands.
opponent antiques dealterm I would research the coins to check their possible value, I would check on Ebay and other similar sites to get an idea what the clock and china are actually being sold for. I would figure in the owner may have to hold on to the items for some time before recovering his investment and I would ask for twice what I would settle for.
counterpart car dealterm I would consider what I want in terms of monthly costs. I would consider whether the additions they are offering offset some of that cost and is worthwhile to me.
counterpart car information To be honest, I’d probably just go on and try to sell my current car (and find a new one) elsewhere. I just don’t like dickering with people enough to mess with it.
opponent contractor demeanor I would make sure the remainder of my house is clean and I would look put together. Giving off a complete adult and capable impression would give a better chance at the contractor taking me seriously.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would be calm, but insistent on being the hurt party that deserves repairs and reparations. I will make bullet points as to the main issues and concerns I want to mention in the negotiation.
counterpart job information I would think about what it is that I willing to accept. I would speak confidently in what I am asking for.
opponent car information I would find out what I could sell my used car for elsewhere, so that I could negotiate to get more. I would find out what other dealerships are charging for the car I want and the extra add-ons. I would also be prepared to ask how long it would take to get a model of the car without the extras and at a lower price (because a) that’s what I really need/want, and b) the salesperson might e motivated to make a sale TODAY and bring down the price to make that happen when he/she realizes I’m not in a rush to buy.
counterpart contractor demeanor I would do some research so that I knew what I was talking about with the contractor. I would want to understand load-bearing walls, for instance, so I use the right terminology.
partner car demeanor I want this partner to see me as competent and knowledgeable. I would return to the lot after doing my research and present them with comparables for pricing of the car as well as KBB information for the trade-in. I would be direct noting that we both want the best options for ourselves and indicate the desire to fairly negotiate.
opponent tenant information I would provide visual evidence of the leak and also show where the mouse activity has taken place.
counterpart contractor dealterm I would make sure I come in my bargaining negotiation with confidence and try to make sure I get a good deal that works for me.
opponent car demeanor I would come in with confidence, and make an offer I would be happy with. If they didn’t work with me a little bit, I would be prepared to walk away.
partner job demeanor I would make sure to present myself as a professional yet firm negotiator by being polite yet stoic in my demands.
counterpart car information By understanding the full scope of the negotiation and what everything entails.
partner car demeanor I use all the advice the partner gave me. It is a very good advice
counterpart antiques dealterm Keep in mind a limit of how low I will go. Walk if the limit is breached.
partner contractor demeanor I would explain the work that I would like to have done. I would then propose a budget for the project that is lower than I am actually willing to pay, with the assumption that I will be bargaining.
opponent contractor dealterm Come in with a highest price you will accept and not accept anything higher than that.
counterpart tenant information I would tell the property manager that I saw vermin, traced their location, the water damage and my request.
partner job dealterm First of all I would wait to see what the HR rep said and then state that I had a few questions and ask about the money and flex time from Home. Perhaps mention another potential job and what their offer was - although this would be lying it would not be provable and would give me some leverage. I could also mention why I want the flex time and why I think I am worth more salary.
partner antiques dealterm I would think about what the items are worth to me and decide if the offer satisfies me. I would consider the potential value of the items and how much I might be losing if I took or didn’t take the offer.
opponent antiques information I would ask the trader if that’s the best they can do. I would tell them I’m going to get other estimates.
counterpart job information I would try to start off with a complement with a thank for the offer and that I would like to work here. Then talk about the issue I found with the offer letter.
opponent tenant information Bring up the mice problem, if that doesn’t budge then bring up the more expensive water damage situation as leverage.
opponent job information I’d make a list of possible questions and how I’d like to answer them. I’d keep this list in front of me during the call to help me focus.
counterpart job information I would ask what is the reason for the discrepancy between the verbal offer and the official one from HR. If possible I would present a recording of the original offer being made to me.
counterpart job information I would make notes about things like minimum salary I would accept and how often I would expect to be able to work from home. I would also make a list of questions I want to ask so that I wouldn’t forget anything important during the conversation.
opponent car dealterm It is how I buy a car. I set a limit on my net spending (cost of car plus add-ons minus trade-in) and I do not budge from that number. I also negotiate towards the end of the month when they need to make their quotas.
counterpart tenant information I would try to find out more about the history of this persons negotiations. I would also have a solid idea of what I wanted to obtain and what I was willing to give up before beginning the negotiation.
counterpart car dealterm I would first apply this advice by deciding how much I wanted to trade my car at minimal and how much I wanted to buy the car for. I would likely look online to see comparable amounts for both offers.
partner car demeanor I would go into the negotiations thinking about two different strategies. Make sure the person I am negotiating with knows that I will walk away from the deal and the trade in value if it is not on the terms that I am looking for. Come in looking strong.
opponent contractor demeanor I would calmly bring up my concerns about the reviews and hopefully be able to get a discount if the project isn’t done or has issues after installation within a certain timeframe.
opponent antiques demeanor I would take the advice of opponent perception to heart. I would make sure that I am perceived as fair and polite but also truthful and serious.
opponent job demeanor I would be kind but firm and explaining that my background qualifies me or greater compensation and also explain that my potential boss and I discussed optional work at home days
partner tenant dealterm
  1. Not comfortable living and sharing my food that i got to throw away because of mice.
  2. Disease and rabies if get bitten
  3. It is nasty
  4. If nothing is done asap manager will be sue and will be moving from apartment.
partner antiques dealterm I am not a very confident negotiator, so I would likely not be willing to walk away from the first dealer. I would be more likely to take the current offer as is, even with the advice.
counterpart contractor dealterm Think of what the worst deal is that you would except from the counterpart. Also set a point at which you would walk away.
partner antiques demeanor I would want to present myself as someone who is not necessarily in a big hurry to get rid of the items. I would make a high but fair counteroffer.
opponent job dealterm I would clearly identify my needs and make sure they fit within the framework of the role.
partner antiques dealterm I would do some research and make sure I am knowledgeable before I begin negotiating.
partner car information I would first create a list of everything that I wanted and prioritize the list. Then, I would look at what was offered. I would focus my negotiations on the few things that were on the top of my list and leverage the things at the bottom of my list.
partner car dealterm I’d go back in with both a counteroffer on each of the three points (price, plan, and trade-in value), as well as a decision in my head ahead of time about the least I’d be happy taking for my trade-in car and most I’m willing to pay for the new one.
partner antiques demeanor I would consider that I did not look confident from the beginning. They knew I had no idea of what the price was when I walking in. As soon as he gave me his quote, I ran off to the car to call a friend. In conclusion, I would have to go in the store and say I am so sorry but I will have turn down your offer because I know these are worth double, let them know you will go elsewhere and maybe they will offer more then.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would try to seem mature and professional and knowledgeable on renter laws and rights. I would try to stay calm and confident and make a good impression so that my concerns and demands are taken seriously.
counterpart job dealterm I would keep in mind that I could always choose to walk away and search for a better offer.
counterpart tenant dealterm Basically from the advice I got that I should consider the worst case scenario, what’s something I absolutely refuse to deal with and negotiate from there. If the landlord isn’t willing to give me better than the worst case scenario, I should be prepared to either deal with it or walk away.
opponent tenant dealterm I would figure out what the property damages are worth to me to start the negotiation, what amount to start and how low I am willing to settle for.
partner job information I would have to lay out all the facts to showcase why the negotiation should go in my favor. People tend to forget things easily so you’ll need to provide evidence.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would accept no less than a speedy repair of the damage and remediation of the mice issue as worst case. I would start with asking for repair, remediation, and compensation for inconvenience and replacement of grocery items.
partner contractor dealterm I would only go ahead with the job if it were to be in writing that he would be able to do exactly what I asked for and if it were in the parameters of what I was willing to pay for the job.
counterpart car information I would have in mind a firm amount I need for my current car before trading it in. I would also research how much I can expect to pay for the car I want to buy.
partner tenant demeanor I would explain to him what evidence I have seen with the mouse and give a deadline for the problem to be addressed or allow me to take care of it myself and take it off my rent.
opponent job information I would take this expert advice to come prepared with responses to potential questions that the hiring manager would ask. I would have notes to predict what they may say and ask.
partner car dealterm I would do the same things the expert suggested in order for me to get a good deal.
opponent tenant demeanor I would try to have an detailed conversation about my problem and try to tell them what I need from them and what can we do so the problem is solved.
counterpart tenant information I would reserve some of my comments to see what the property manager said. If they said certain things it would dictate what I would say back to them.
opponent antiques dealterm I would try and do more research on what it could be worth, and then figure out my limit of what I want from this before I take it somewhere else. I would be exacting and back off when necessary.
partner job demeanor I would first decide if I wanted to negotiate or if I wanted to stand firm on what I was already expecting. If I am willing to negotiate I would let the HR person know that I will talk about the offer.
partner job demeanor I would make sure that the conversation I had was inquisitive and asking about options. I would not want to come across as demanding but would want to make sure I am being firm in what I am looking for.
counterpart contractor information learning from my counterpart, in other to make use of it in future for my own best. I will foolow the managers advise strictly.
opponent contractor dealterm This would get accomplished by following the installed guidelines to insure the best deal possible. It’s only worth doing business with the contractor if you can get a beneficial gain from it.
partner tenant information I would follow the advice. I will be careful of my conversation with the property manager.
opponent antiques demeanor I would act as if I could part with them or not. I would not let them know I don’t know as much about the items as I do. If they think your desperate to get rid of them then they would give you the lowest price.
counterpart contractor dealterm To have your limits in mind during the negotiation of what is the most you can pay before it is a deal breaker as well as what is the most that you want to pay.
opponent car information I would think about the value that I want to get the price down too and offer a little below that first. I would describe how I really think the used car is worth more than they are giving me, and that I can go to another dealership to get a better deal.
partner antiques information I would be prepared to provide more details about each of the items and find evidence of them selling for a more expensive price at other places.
partner job dealterm I would list out my friend’s suggestions and decide my ideal outcome, the least I would accept and what would make it not worth it at all. I also might do some practice role play.
partner tenant demeanor I would personally create the persona that my life is too busy and too important to have to deal with issues like this. give the impression that this issue is costing me time and money and it is simply unexusable
opponent tenant dealterm I would apply the expert advice by focusing on my main goal. I would set realistic expectations and I would understand my position.
partner tenant dealterm I would let them know that I am the best candidate for the job.
opponent tenant information I think I would try and work out why the property manager treats tenants poorly. I think I’d also try and come up with a high and low figure of what I’d be willing to accept for damages.
counterpart job demeanor I would gently let the HR Manager know that I had already been promised in the interview about a work from home schedule. I would also point out other competitive offers in similar jobs.
opponent contractor information Research to find the approximate cost of such renovations.
counterpart antiques information Have a fair value in mind if the antique trader asks, “what do you want for them?” or “how much do you think they are worth?” If there is a way to do any research on the coins in advance it would be helpful.
partner car information I would use the advice by looking up the car value for the vehicle I wanted. I would also take into account the car value of my car to get the closest value.
opponent car demeanor The image I would establish is someone who is giving the salesperson one last opportunity to earn my business. Either they provide a better offer or I will go to another to buy my new car.
opponent job dealterm I would ask myself what bargain I should get and how much I need for living expenses.
counterpart antiques demeanor I would try my best to come across as pleasant and knowledgable. I would want them to feel comfortable around me and believing that I am aware of the approximate value of my items, so they are more likely to give me a fair/competitive offer.
counterpart contractor information I would make sure to think about my counteroffer beforehand.
partner car dealterm I would get in my head my top payment and if the dealership cannot negotiate the deal that works at or below that, respectfully walk away.
opponent job demeanor Verify the exact expectations your prospective employer has of your job duties. Get them in writing. Have a bottom line number you would need to make this job acceptable. Do not go below that line. Your long term job satisfaction will depend on this.
counterpart antiques dealterm I would try to get a better deal on the coins. If not, then try to limit the places I visit to the ones likely to offer a better deal.
opponent car demeanor Be sure to dress nicely and not look sloppy. Make sure you show confidence in your conversation. Be firm and not nervous.
counterpart contractor information I would lay out what needs to be done and the minimum price that I fee like I can actually give to make this project happen. I would also have a max number in my head and if we can’t agree at the smaller price, I might give an in between.
partner car dealterm I would take the expert’s advice and consider my limits before negotiating with the car dealer. I would determine the minimum deal I would be willing to accept, and keep that in mind during the negotiation. This way, I can ensure that I don’t agree to a deal that is not in my best interest and be prepared to walk away if necessary.
partner tenant dealterm Focus on your limit and work backwards from that.
counterpart contractor demeanor In general, I’m not a great negotiator but one thing I know is that if I have credibility with the other party in a negotiation I’m more likely to be successful. I did this with contractors in my own home in the past by researching the structural parts of my house and the options to maintain load-bearing function so I could discuss the options for how to proceed.
counterpart car dealterm That night, I would come up with a limit for the purchase price and trade in value combined. If the final offer with the dealer is above/below that limit, move on and try to make a deal elsewhere. If the value is within my limit, proceed with the deal at the dealers the next day.
partner contractor demeanor Construction and carpentry contractors are typically very casual and impersonal. People are generally just viewed, on the job, as what contribution they make to their job - the person paying for it, the person who tells you what to do, etc. If you can appropriately match their social tone of casual and impersonal while not trying to push yourself as anything further than the person paying, you can theoretically wiggle out a better deal.
counterpart car information It would help me in the negotiation process and the selection of the car and financing.
opponent tenant demeanor Mouse in a house is a severe harm and threat to tenants life wellbeing. Rents should be reduced because of these.
partner car dealterm Tell them about other dealerships and their current deals and see if they could work something out. Would tell them about reviews I have read online.
counterpart antiques information Try to get the antique trader to give me a reason why he thinks the items are worth what he is offering. Then try to use that information and what I know to get a higher price.
counterpart antiques dealterm I would think about the research I did and be prepared to take no less than the median value I saw for each item or the antique store’s offer, whichever is greater.
opponent tenant dealterm I would know that the minimum I would be willing to take would be a complete repair but no discount for damages. I would have to be firm with not letting them get away with putting it off for months or doing a bad patch job.
partner tenant demeanor I will apply the best advice to my benefit
opponent antiques information I would first try to not show how desperate I am to get rid of the items because I don’t want the trader to think that I’m an easy target. Then I would increase the offer price my more than double to see how the trader will react.
opponent car information I would take into account the interests of each party and make an offer that seems somewhat appealing to the dealership.
counterpart tenant demeanor I want them to know that I am knowledgeable and not a push over. I want to show that I am firm but don’t want to come across as hard headed and unwilling to listen and compromise.
partner job information I would look a few negotiating techniques on places like youtube. I would see what items mean the most to me to negotiate first, and items that would be a bonus. See what numbers or figures i’d like, then let my employer know why I’m the best person and why I deserve those items.
partner antiques demeanor I would make a bargain that would benefit both of us
opponent car information I would suggest a price that was lower than their offer but still reasonable and bring up that we can make this sale, that who knows how long the car might be sitting unsold.
partner contractor demeanor I wouldn’t spend much time bargaining with the contractor. I would get the quote and ask what the quote covers regarding materials and labor. If it’s not within my budget or his plans aren’t up to my standards, I’d get another quote elsewhere.
opponent contractor demeanor I would apply this by letting the contractor know that I have read their past reviews aren’t all favorable. I would also let them know I wouldn’t settle for less then the best from them.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would want the hole in the wall fixed, the leaking radiator fixed and an exterminator to come in to make sure that there are no other places the mice may be able to get in to my apartment.
counterpart tenant information I would read up on how tenants have dealt with this in the past and what questions they have encountered. That way I’ll be prepared.
partner job information Have a set idea of where I want my contract to be at the end of this negotiation. So I can go in with a position of strength and successfully negotiate my terms.
partner antiques dealterm I would decide what I need at a minimum to stay and deal with this trader and tell them the amount, and let them know that if I need to, I will drive to the other dealers to see if they would match my minimum.
counterpart car dealterm I would pre plan what are my lowest and highest numbers that i am willing to goto. this way i am not bamboozled when it comes time to negotiate.
partner tenant dealterm I think writing down some key points in a list would be a good idea. I want to make sure I get my point across to my landlord and so they can understand my situation more.
opponent car demeanor keeping my options open. Be willing to walk away
counterpart antiques demeanor I would project confidence when I spoke to them again. I would want them to think that I know the value of the items even if I don’t, as they will be more likely to offer me more that way.
partner tenant demeanor I would apply this advice to my negotiation by giving the impression that I know what the laws and regulations are for the area and what the landlord is responsible for. Then I would make it clear what I want to be done in terms of repairs.
opponent job dealterm I would consider an offer lower than what I expected but I would have a firm minimum amount in mind that I would accept.
counterpart antiques demeanor I would first do extensive research online, then I would also let the next dealer know that I had already been to other dealers.
partner job dealterm I would decide that I’m not willing to accept anything less than I discussed with my potential manager. During the call I would first express my appreciation and willingness to accept an offer and that offer will need to reflect what was discussed in the interview.
opponent antiques demeanor I’ll tell the trader I have a better offer in the place i visited before (even when I didn’t) and will rise the offer 3X. if the items worth more he will rise the offer
partner job demeanor I would present myself as someone who is ready to seek job offers elsewhere to give the impression I have nothing to lose in this negotiation. If they are ready to go at the negotiation with making the offer less desirable than it was advertised, then the negotiation is over and I will leave the job immediately.
opponent car information I’d get a few different estimates on the car’s value and present them to the dealer. If they don’t want to give the amount I feel it’s worth then I won’t go through with the trade.
partner tenant information I would reflect on the advice and write down answers to expected questions, Also, as part of my preparation, I would write down my responses. I would also document damages.
counterpart contractor information I would try and research to the best of my knowledge on what contractors are paid. And then I would try and research as much as I could the prices of the materials they would be using.
opponent car demeanor Car dealer should offer best and effective cars for services
opponent car information I would go in armed with as much information as possible. I would compare prices of the car that I want elsewhere with how much I can expect to pay at the dealership, as well as how much my current car is worth for trade in so I could suggest taking my old car elsewhere.
partner job dealterm I would keep in mind the lowest compensation I would be willing to accept, and aim for higher than that so I have wiggle room for negotiating. I would also consider whether not working remotely was a deal breaker.
opponent contractor demeanor I would first understand the topic myself, how walls work and utilities are connected, then understand the people I am talking to, make sure they have all the licenses, training, and proofs I need to be sure they know what they are talking about.
partner contractor dealterm Please do not cause any structural damage to the house. Please make sure the electrical connections to the kitchen island are maintained.
counterpart job information I would be diplomatic in my approach with the hiring manager and reiterate the initial terms under which I had been willing to accept the position.
counterpart job information I would first try to observe the hiring managers facial expressions, Tone of voice, and body language when i give my demands. I then would demand the highest i can get, then work our way down to something we cam both compromise on.
counterpart job demeanor i will state all my assets and what i will bring to the job and how i can help..i will ask for a little higher pay
counterpart contractor information I would expect the contractor to be the one providing me with information, and me listening to responding. I want him to come up with a price first and to bring up structural issues first.
counterpart car demeanor I would think about how I want to be perceived, and I would then come up with a plan of how to behave differently in my next negotiation about the car; namely, I want to be seen as firm and knowledgeable, so I will make sure that I am educated on the car I want to buy, the car I want to trade in, their value, and anything else that will ensure that I am well informed and can speak with confidence and expertise. In addition, I want to be seen as firm, so I will make sure to project myself as confident but humble, and also persistent in my terms, so that I am not seen as wavering or being uncertain.
opponent job dealterm I’d come to the negotiation with a set of requests that, if not fulfilled, would make me look for another job. My limit would be those requests fulfilled for me to consider that place of work.
partner antiques demeanor I would follow it to see what happens, after all, he is supposed to know all about negotiations. If it doesn’t work and I don’t get what I want, I can always leave.
opponent car information I would likely get quotes of what the new car and my current car are worth, from a Kelly Blue Book-type source. I would also make sure I knew every single service done to my current car, and be asking about repairs or services done to the newer car.
partner job information I would research what I’m going to negotiate with the hiring manager so I’m well prepared.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would make sure to be prepared for the possibility of moving out and I would prepare by looking at different apartments for rent so that I can be prepared if landlord is unwilling to help
partner job information I would prepare for how I’d handle it if I’m told that I can’t work from home and if no higher pay is offered. How hard am I willing to push, or at what point am I no longer interested need to be thought out in advance.
opponent car dealterm I would try to negotiate for lower payments or I would try to get more for trading in my car. If none of that worked, I would walk away.
counterpart car dealterm I would start out high and only go to my lowest offer and not any lower to what they are willing to pay.
opponent job dealterm I would focus more so on negotiating the work from home days than the net pay, as that would be more valuable to me and my home situation.
opponent contractor dealterm I would first offer my lowest expectation. Then I would work up from there increasing acceptable pricing.
counterpart tenant information I will contemplate the image I wish to present to the property manager before negotiating and practice beforehand to ensure that I leave a positive impact and maintain a successful relationship with him.
opponent contractor dealterm How much time it will take and the cost of materials?
partner tenant demeanor I would assume that they didn’t know about the damage and try to avoid an accusatory tone.
opponent contractor information Honestly, this advice I found to be vague and somewhat unhelpful so I’m not sure how to apply it. I suppose I would just plan what information I specifically needed from the contractor and set a hard line for my budget.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would come up with some ideas of what the minimum I would accept and a few choices also.
counterpart antiques dealterm I would go back to the trader and negotiate for a higher price. I would tell the trader that this stuff is actually worth considerably more but that I don’t want to make a longer drive if I don’t have to.
opponent contractor demeanor I would want my contractor to see me as confident and knowledgeable in what I am talking about while negotiating.
partner tenant demeanor I would make sure that when speaking with the property manager, I am very clear in what I am looking for and that they need to resolve this mice problem.
counterpart car demeanor I would immediately tell the dealer that the price for the new car is too high and the offer for my car is too low.
opponent antiques dealterm Yes I’ll take the advice of the expert. I’ll set a limit of 300-500 on each of the items and negotiate
partner antiques dealterm Asking them the historical value to the trader, the region where it came from, the material composition of the coin.
partner car dealterm Simply make your idea of a best counter offer to the selling agent. You have nothing to lose by saying exactly what you want, but be willing to walk away if you don’t like their answer.
counterpart contractor demeanor be fair and open minded . do not get lost in the weeds with minor details
counterpart car information I would begin by telling the sales person that I plan to sell my car privately, so that we are strictly negotiating the sales price of the new car with options. Once that has been agreed, if it can be agreed, I will ask him to offer me a trade-in value.
opponent tenant demeanor I was to come across as a good tenant and also a valuable tenant. I have already been here a year, so I will probably bring that up.
counterpart antiques information I would include the fact that other people have offered interest in buying the items and that you know some of these items are worth quite a bit. I would maybe include that I know they have a minimum value of \(100 or latex85f7be3d32cce3b040b08b598cc19d47\)$ compensation) and here is why I’m entitled to it. I would expect the landlord to push back, so I would consider how far I’m willing to go to get the compensation I think I deserve (lawsuit?).
partner antiques dealterm I suppose I would set my limit to $500 firstly, $100 more than the initial offer. I would then tell the shop owner that I already had an offer of $600 from somebody else for the collection and that I was just shopping around to gauge their reaction.
counterpart car dealterm I would tell the dealer that I liked the car, however, it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. Could we renegotiate? If no…I walk.
opponent job information I would think that what I want to achieve is to get higher compensation and more flexibility with remote work. I would think of questions HR might ask, like “Why should we give you higher compensation?” and be prepared to argue my case with examples from my experience/qualifications.
counterpart job dealterm I WOULD APPROVE THE HIRING MANAGER IN A WAY THAT HE WOULD PROBABLY CONSIDER GIVING ME A BETTER OFFER IN TERMS OF GOOD PAY AS WELL AS ALLOW ME TO WORK REMOTELY SOMETIMES
opponent tenant demeanor I would mention going to the health department if there was no resolve within a certain amount of time. I’d also try to get them to reimburse me for mice traps and replacement food as a motivation to get the problem solved quicker.
partner antiques demeanor I would want to appear confident that I knew quite a bit about the value of my items.
counterpart job information I would definitely negotiate the salary and the hours, if not the flexibility or I just wouldn’t take the job.
opponent tenant information I would probably look for someone who dealt with a similar problem on reddit. I usually have to look for answers on reddit because google doesn’t work anymore. I’ll see what a couple of threads say and follow that advice.
counterpart antiques demeanor I would try not appear too desperate with the antique trader. I would act as if I didn’t care if the items sold or not.
counterpart contractor demeanor I would make sure I understand the work involved so that I do not come across as someone who is clueless about home repairs. I would also make sure I have one or two other contractors that I am talking to so I can convey that I am “shopping around”.
partner contractor information I think I would look online to find what sort of information this contractor may ask about. Such as a forum for contractors.
opponent car demeanor I would tell the car dealer that while I appreciate his assistance, I’m not sure I’m getting the best deal I could possibly get. I would quote the Bluebook value of my older car as what I’m looking to get on my older car as well as explain what I’m looking for in terms of payment for the new car, and then let the dealer know that unless we can meet a compromise I will unfortunately have to look elsewhere.
partner contractor dealterm I would think of the price range I have in mind and what would fit my budget. I’d think about reasons for requesting the contractor to lower his price, because that’s what I expect I will be doing.
counterpart car dealterm I would think about the things that are deal breakers and what is my absolute bottom line and move accordingly. I will not be bullied into buying.
counterpart job information Before meeting with the hiring manager, I will contemplate the message I want to convey and engage in rehearsals to make sure I establish a very positive relationship and leave a good impression on him.
partner antiques dealterm I would first consider what would be the lowest price I’d be willing to accept for the items. After that, I would start negotiations at a higher price and not come down from the prices I thought of at the beginning
counterpart car demeanor I would ask for a lower price.
counterpart contractor demeanor Come from a position of it would be nice to be done but doesn’t have to be, and doesn’t have to be done by them.
partner tenant dealterm I would ask for the maximum compensation that I want and be mindful of the minimum I would be willing to go. I would also be aware that even if they allow me to break the lease without any negative consequences, moving to a new place will cause unexpected expenses.
partner contractor demeanor It is important to be mindful of the impression that you want to convey during the negotiation. You should take your partners concerns into consideration as well.
partner antiques demeanor I would want to com across as a reasonable and productive negotiator. I would convey: let’s get to a deal that makes us both somewhat happy.
opponent job demeanor The advice was super vague. If I decide I want to sound smart and confident, I would think about how best to convey that.
opponent antiques information I would prepare as much as possible for the types of questions the antique trader might ask me about the items. I would also prepare to respond to why I felt as though the items were worth more than the initial appraisal.
opponent tenant information I would try to be as honest as I can with the property manager in order to get some sympathy from he/she.
partner job information I would consider all the possibilities I can think of for questions the HR manager might have and how I would respond to each question.
partner tenant information I would practice the negotiation with someone ahead of time.
opponent contractor dealterm I would be very weary. You can’t cut corners with contracting. Any time somebody wants to give you a deal, most of the time you’re going to get a nightmare job.
partner car dealterm I would ask the dealership how they arrived at the value that they are placing on the car I am selling. I would also ask the dealer about any incentives regarding the new car. I would make sure I had an idea of what my bottom line was, or the worst deal I would be willing to accept from the dealer.
partner tenant information I would show them pictures I took of the water damage and where the mice came through as well as pictures of what stuff of mine was damaged. I would ask them to fix this as soon as possible so there’s no further damage and to give me a discount on next month’s rent.
opponent job demeanor I would try to be polite but firm
counterpart car demeanor I would do a little research so I was more knowledgeable about the price of the car, the need for the extras, etc. I also would research the going price for my trade-in, so I could be better prepared to negotiate.
counterpart car demeanor Try to appear knowledgeable about current prices for cars. Give my desired amount and be firm with it.
opponent job information i will follow the expert advice by thinking carefully about the information i will be giving.
opponent job dealterm Keeping my thresholds in mind, I would add an additional twenty percent or so to the numbers for negotiations, so that if I were to “compromise” I would still be getting what I really want.
partner contractor dealterm I would tell them I want a certain price for all the things I want to be remodeled if not no deal.
partner contractor dealterm I would apply this advice by deciding what maximum price I feel is fair for the amount of work, based on research into how much the work typically costs in my area. I’d have this number in mind as I start the negotiation at a much lower number in the hopes that the price we arrive at is still lower than my limit.
partner job dealterm Very sound advice. Don’t let my excitement on getting the job get in the way of real life needs that have to fit my lifestyle.
counterpart antiques demeanor I would try to enter the headspace of the trader, see what they are thinking and figure out what I’d do if I was them.
partner contractor demeanor I intend to think about the image I want to project and do some thinking to foster a successful partnership and leave a positive impression on the contractor.
opponent antiques dealterm I would figure out that ‘floor’ or bare minimum I was willing to get out of everything. I would then offer/ask for a total for all three items that was higher than that floor.
partner car dealterm I would definitely map out not just what I’m hoping to get from a car deal, but also what I’m willing to give up in the deal. Thinking about it this way gives a wider range of my limits and makes it easier to say “yes” or to walk away.
opponent antiques dealterm I would tell the dealer that I believe they are worth more. I would then ask for his best price.
opponent job demeanor I would want the hiring manager to see me as a strong negotiator that had a lot of self confidence and that could not be pushed around. I also would want to appear to be a team player that could negotiate in good faith and not be a stubborn person that would not see both sides of the issue.
counterpart job demeanor I would alert them of the salary and that I can get a higher salary at another company. I would also let the manager know that I was told that working from home was an option offered to me, and several people at the company already work from home.
opponent antiques dealterm I am a busy person, and sometimes convenience is much more on my mind than money. If I do not have to travel, I will not.
partner contractor information Ask the contractor specific questions about the kitchen island and how he will accomplish it.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would prepare an argument by gathering as much evidence about the situation and the costs as I could. I would enter the negotiation by being reasonable and would be willing to listen to what they have to say.
opponent contractor demeanor I would look up comparable costs online to get estimates or ballpark range for my negotiations. I would start the negotiations at the lower end of the range I found information on for similar work. I would also get quotes from other contractors to include in my negotiations with the contractor that I want to do the work.
counterpart antiques demeanor I’d act confident. I’d pretend that I was certain the coins were worth much more.
partner job demeanor I would start by trying to ask for an increase in salary as it should be somewhat close to the standard in the industry. If that does not work I would push for work from home as then I would not have transportation costs to budget for so the lower salary would be acceptable.
counterpart contractor information First I would come up with a strategy in order of what I want. Than I would write down all my questions thoroughly for when they come back and forth with the negotiation.
partner job dealterm I would come up with my limits for compensation and work from home limits and go into the conversation with these in mind.
counterpart tenant information I would mention that there is some minor water damage near the radiator that is getting worse over time and that so far, it has made a hole that has allowed mice to enter the apartment. I would make sure to be nice and understanding about it, but also mention that the problem is worsening.
opponent job demeanor I would be firm in my needs while citing my experience and stronger points.
counterpart contractor dealterm I would know what price I’m wiling to pay. I will not accept an offer over that price.
partner tenant demeanor To be able to make the most impact with a Human in the shortest amount of time would mean I have to do keep his intention. Although the landlord has the upper-hand coming into the conversation, an informed tenant can match that power.
opponent job information I would explain that in talks with the potential future manager we discussed some things that are critical for your work/life balance and would appreciate that they be reconsidered and if not that you will have to not accept the offer.
opponent car information I would refrain from sharing exact figures for how much I was hoping to pay each month or for the value of the trade in. I would ask fro information about removing the extras I didn’t ask for along with increasing the value of the trade in.
opponent car dealterm I’m not an expert in negotiation, but I would definitely approach this by making a lowball counteroffer in a very upfront, matter-of-fact way. This offer would be somewhat less than what I would want to pay, hoping that we could negotiate closer to my original desired price.
counterpart tenant information You are 100% in the right for this situation. you tell the landlord that the damage was caused from the radiator and you want the hole patched up immedietly. you dont have to live with pests and damage in you apartment. you paying rent and you deserve a safe home
partner tenant dealterm I would make sure that I know what my limits are before negotiating.
opponent contractor dealterm I will consider the impression I wish to make on the contractor prior to negotiating and engage in some research about the project to ensure that I maintain a positive relationship and make a good impact.
counterpart contractor demeanor somewhat helpful i would want to come across strong for sure. I would need to do some research so that I can show I know the whole situation proplerly.
opponent antiques information I would be clear and concise with the trader on what I’m needing.
opponent car dealterm I would think of the maximum amount I would pay for the car - including financing terms and the minimum I would take for my trade in. I would use those numbers to determine when to walk away
partner car dealterm i would be transparent and i will be sharing truthful information.
opponent car information I would make sure I plan my questions in advance.
counterpart car dealterm I would come up with a separate range for both the trade in value and the purchase price of the new car. I would treat each as a separate negotiation so one result wouldn’t be contingent upon the other.
partner contractor demeanor It’s important to understand, in detail what needs to be done with the house and a limited understanding how it is actually accomplished from a technical perspective. Without having proper knowledge, there is no leverage to negotiate.
partner antiques dealterm I would have an offer in my head that I would be my lowest offer I would accept. Any offer above that, I would greatly consider
opponent antiques information I would be prepared to inform the antique trader that I had found in my research that the coins were of a greater value than what was offered and I would like to negotiate a higher price. I wouldn’t give any information that I wasn’t sure of their value.
counterpart contractor information I would get some other quotes to see if they are competitive and compare.
opponent contractor information I’m not sure why you would negotiate with a contractor, in my opinion you shouldn’t. You’re not buying something. You’re paying for a service. However, if I had to take the advice and negotiate I would sit down with a family member and have them act as the contractor and practice a conversation with them.
counterpart job information I would try to know the range of pay. I would have something to show why I should get the higher pay. I would get the higher pay and then use that to negotiate my work from home. I would take lower just a bit to work from home.
counterpart job dealterm I would need to clearly understand my limit before speaking with thr hiring manager. I would ask for what I want, yet be prepared to walk away from s low offer.
partner antiques demeanor I would approach the negotiation with confidence and make sure they understand that I can walk away and not sell anything.
counterpart antiques information Honestly, I probably ask the new chatgpt powered bing for some assistance and see what it recommends, I’m pretty socially inept and have no idea what to expect of the antique dealer, at least to any helpful degree. Failing that, I’d probably spend a few minutes trying to think of things before giving up, and then just going in and being honest about my doubts. Or I’d just give in and ask around at the various distant antique dealers. Or post the coins on reddit and ask for help there.
partner car information I would ask numerous questions about their terms, but have a hardline stance when it comes to my own expectations.
partner car demeanor I would definitely try to bargain more on the issue of lowering the price of the former car. Also try to get them to agree to a reasonable price.
opponent tenant dealterm Ask for a better outcome than you expect. That way you can bargain down without crossing your threshold.
counterpart contractor information I’d start by asking about their base cost (I.e.) labor and materials, then about the projected length of time for the project. I’d come in prepared with my list of must haves, and maybe even ask if the expert can come along for advice. Also, I wouldn’t be afraid to mention that I’d get a second appraisal from someone else.
partner job information I would devise a detailed plan of what I expect and the lowest amount I would accept. I would be prepared to be firm and resilient when they try to push back. I would also state that the hiring manager said that there are no issues with my original proposal and ask them to contact that person to verify my statement.
opponent job demeanor Before speaking with the hiring manager, I will think about the message I aim to convey and make sure I leave a favorable impression and foster a productive relationship.
opponent job dealterm I would take the advice of the negotiation manager and think about the pros and cons. If I am good with working in the office and not at home, then I would not bring that up. I would only bring up what was necessary and important to me.
partner tenant demeanor I would explain what the issue is and also bring up the fact that it is causing property damage.
counterpart car demeanor I think the best way to apply this advice would be to make it seem like my options are open. I would tell the dealership I really want the car but I can’t justify paying that price when another dealership is offering me more for my car.
partner car demeanor I would try to convey confidence and authority as I counter offer on the car purchase.
partner job dealterm I would write a list of what is absolutely essential for my living with this job. I would write the lowest salary and working conditions but ask for a salary higher than the HR manager offered.
counterpart antiques dealterm Figure out an exact limit that I am willing to accept and then go into the negotiation with that number in mind.
counterpart job information I would prepare in advance exactly what I wanted to ask for as far as job accommodations. I would research what others in the company are doing in regards to work from home and average salary.
opponent contractor information I suppose I would research what prices to expect when doing this type of remodel and I would also research which problems tend to arise during these remodels and I would ask about those things.
counterpart antiques demeanor I would be confident but not arrogant. I would also have some knowledge of the worth of my antiques so I would not be taken advantage of.
opponent tenant information I would list all the reasons this needs to be addressed.
counterpart car dealterm I would make sure I made a concrete set of what I wanted and amounts I was willing to budge and not budge on. I would also make it very clear what my wants were to the salesperson and that I am more than willing to go elsewhere.
counterpart antiques dealterm I would go to other shops and compare their offers. If it was about the same everywhere, I might try the local shop again and ask for a higher price.
partner tenant demeanor I would ask how to speak to the property manager without sounding accusatory. It’s not the landlord’s fault that the mice got in. But it’s their responsibility to handle the hole in the wall.
opponent job dealterm I would look at my other employment opportunities and use those to help me set a lower limit of what I would expect from Blue Bay. I would especially think about wages, but also about future potential and benefits, such as work from home.
opponent car information I would look at other dealerships and see if the price was fair for the new car. I would also research how much my current vehicle was worth.
counterpart contractor dealterm I would be pretty moderate to conservative in my negation proceedings with the contractor.
counterpart antiques dealterm I wouldn’t. The premise was absurd. And the so called “expert,” just regurgitated common sense. It would be completely useless “advice” in reality.
partner tenant demeanor I plan to consider the image I want to project to my partner, the property manager and practice beforehand to establish a positive relationship and make a favorable impact.
partner contractor demeanor I would attempt to appear confident and knowledgeable to the contractor.
opponent job demeanor I would try to appear professional and reasonable, but also very firm. I would basically want to show that I’m valuable to the company but that I’m also ready to stand up for my n eeds.
partner job demeanor I would first send an email or set up a call with the manager I interviewed with to clarify details before any negotiation with the hiring manager. If directly dealing with the hiring manager, I would first address the salary and then the work from home options stating that the details presented in the offer letter differ greatly from the conversations had with the manager.
counterpart antiques information I would want the trader to know that I am considering driving further away to get a few more estimates.
partner tenant demeanor I would apply the advice by explaining the exact circumstances that led me to discover the mice, being clear in what my expectations are, and taking all steps to ensure that I come across as calm and confident, yet still assertive.
opponent antiques information I could learn about my opponent to help my negotiation so that I can sell my items for more.
partner car dealterm I would know what my bottom line was before I got there. I would move the conversation to the salesperson offering a deal that met my bottom line and if they did not I would walk away.
partner car dealterm I would apply it so I have better sales and deals for customers
counterpart tenant information I would make a list of issues. Then I would provide visual documentation of the damage and where the mice are coming in from.
counterpart tenant demeanor In advance of negotiating with the property manager, I will reflect on the impression I aim to make and engage in some rehearsals at home to ensure that I foster a successful partnership and leave a positive impression. I wouldn’t take it easy on my opponent.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would look into the financial and time consequences of cancelling my lease and searching for another apartment. Then I would figure out my bottom line, and thinking about asking for more, so I could bargain down.
partner job dealterm I would decide on the lowest offer I would be willing to take and begin negotiating far above that limit. I would set a hard limit on walking away if they lowball me past the lowest I would accept. i would not state this limit to the partner.
opponent car demeanor I would want to leave the car dealer with the impression that I am under no pressure to buy; it is not a need. Hopefully they would perceive the need to sell me on the car or fear that I would drop the deal or go to another dealership.
opponent contractor demeanor I would do some research on this so I could talk the same language as the contractor. I would also tell the contractor about getting multiple bids
partner car demeanor I’d explain to them that I was looking for a better offer on my trade and before I returned, I’d checked another location and the offer was better. If they would match or present another offer, I’ll consider doing the deal.
opponent job information I would be thankful for the offer from the company, but I would also be firm in my requests regarding working from home. If the company values the employee then they should be flexible.
opponent tenant demeanor I would try my best to remain unemotional and level-headed. I would be very clear on my gripes and expected outcomes.
partner tenant demeanor First, I will not be confrontational from the get-go. I will be serious but firm and offer options/ solutions to solve the problem as soon as possible.
counterpart antiques demeanor Act kind and passionate about your items. Know their worth and be friendly and complimentary to the trader.
partner contractor dealterm I am in a strong position because I do not need the island—of course I want it and therefore might have persuaded myself I need it. I can walk away if the deal is not completely to my satisfaction. That is how I would apply the advice: get everything I want; failing this, try another contractor, or simply give up the project for now.
partner tenant information You want to learn from the manager how you are supposed to file a work request for maintenance and repairs needed on your property not caused by you and how that work request is followed up on and how you would file for reimbursement caused by the needed maintenance and repair (In the process, you would have to explain the issue with just the facts.). The property manager may ask questions about how long you were aware of the issue in which case you need to say you just now learned of it (otherwise he may try to put some of the blame on you for the extent of the problem).
opponent contractor information I would be prepared to negotiate. I would be prepared for back and forth and possible negative feedback.
partner contractor dealterm While I agree with the advice I am getting at least two possibly three quotes from various contractors. I would also want references from previous customers and not just reviews.
counterpart antiques information i would try to bring some of the less expensive items over in a lot and try to unload it. the items that seemed more expensive i would deal with on an individual basis.
counterpart job information I would try to anticipate what the hiring manager might ask, and how I would respond. I would also try to bring up what the mentor or the interviewer had offered with the job.
partner job information I would carefully consider what I hope to achieve. I would also be upfront and honest with HR rep.
counterpart antiques information I would ask what the buying knows about the items, but I would be guarded about how to use this, and what I should reveal.
opponent tenant dealterm I would take this advice and ask the property manager for a repair. If they refuse to do so, I would ask that they decrease the overall rent price for the upcoming year if I have to live with mice in my apartment.
opponent car information I might try to see if I can leverage a third party value of the car. This might help them increase their trade in value.
counterpart contractor dealterm When asking for estimates, I would take his low and high quotes and compare them to my limits. I would then ask him how we could lower the overall costs of the project.
opponent car demeanor The advice you got said it’s very important for you to present the best impression. This means dress nicely and be confident.
counterpart contractor dealterm I would keep in mind what price I am hoping to pay and what the maximum is. I would consider how I would negotiate if the price fell outside that. All that being said, I do not like negotiating and do not know if I would try and negotiate or just decline their services.
opponent antiques information I would follow the advice, but ultimately go with my own intuition. I would still contact the other potential buyers for offers as well.
opponent job demeanor You should be prepared to compromise, but also know what the bottom line you’re willing to accept is. It’s always important to get everything offered in writing.
partner antiques information I would definitely listen and come in with a plan which initially I didn’t.
opponent job information I would explain my need for more flexibility in my schedule. I would ask them what would be required for me to have a higher starting salary.
counterpart contractor dealterm I would ask questions to the contractor if they have the experience to connect the island to the electrical/water systems and have any pictures of their work. i want to know how long will it takes for the work to be finished and a reasonable price to pay for the specific work to be done.
opponent job dealterm I would try to bargain for at least slightly higher pay that a tight market gives with my trade off being the flexibility to work some of the time at home. I already know that some employees do some of their work from home so this should be an option I can negotiate.
opponent car dealterm I would ask for a higher price to sell my car and a lower price to buy the new car. I would leave a lot of room for movement so I can get around the prices in my head I previously decided on.
partner antiques demeanor I would be assertive, but not condescending, regarding the value of the items and I would be honest that I think that particular items may be worth more. I would not act like I was a know-it-all or be flippant about their offer, realizing they also need to make money when they sell said items.
partner contractor information I would think about what I want before I speak, and try to be sure about it.
counterpart job dealterm I would write out on paper my limits like the expert advised. I’d write out the things I’m willing to be flexible on and the things I’m not. I’d also try to get a couple of more offers before calling to negotiate. I’d then call the HR department to negotiate with them.
partner antiques dealterm I would have the set dollar amount I want and prepared to stand my ground. Also, I would anticipate the trader will try to negotiate a lower price.
partner car information I would do my research online, especially about my trade in’s value and what the model of car I like is selling for. I would know my facts and figures before I went back, but I wouldn’t hurry to go back right away, I’d make them sweat it a little bit waiting for me.
partner tenant dealterm I would set a limit of no refund of my rent, but I would demand the landlord pay for extermination and a follow-up exterminator appointment. I would not move out yet, if I just signed a lease.
partner antiques demeanor I think that I would go back and politely state that while I understand they are in business to make money, I also need to make a fair amount from the items. I would let the antique trader know that I had done some research and that the items seemed to be worth a bit more.
partner car dealterm I give the dealer the price that I want both for selling my car and the car that I want and start negotiating with him. If he deviates too much from the price I want then I walk.
counterpart tenant demeanor Before the negotiation, I would write out exactly what I want in terms of repairs, compensation, and pest control so it is clear in my head. I would strive to be professional and firm in tone and remain calm, so this remains a business discussion and not about fear of mice or getting contentious. Since I just renewed the lease, this is a place I want to continue living, with this one problem quickly resolved.
opponent car dealterm I need to set a limit on what I am willing to accept with this seller. If it gets to be too much in the sellers favor I need to look else where for a better deal.
partner tenant demeanor Prior to the meeting, I would review my goals over and over to ensure I appear as confident as possible without questionable inflections in my voice. I would maintain eye contact throughout the meeting to convey assertiveness.
partner tenant information I would prepare ahead my points and reasoning as to why this should be dealt with quickly. I’ll try to gather proof that this damage was no way caused by me or negligence on my part.
opponent car dealterm Using the element of the “limit” provided byt his expert. I would come up with a number and really hold fast to it when the time comes; which is easier said than done. One thing I could do is prepare for the numbers that will come before my last number.
counterpart antiques dealterm I would tell dealer that I must be able to live with myself. I am feeling like my items may be worth more and would like him to reconsider his offer. It is best if we both walk away happy
partner job information I would try to imagine that I am having the conversation with my partner, And also try to stick with the topics that my partner and I discussed.
counterpart antiques demeanor I’d like them to see me as not in any hurry to sell, and as planning on shopping around for the best deal.
partner contractor information I would need to know what prices the contractor usually charges.
opponent job information I’d try to anticipate what they’d say or ask and have a good response ready. I’d give a lot of thought to how the conversation will play out beforehand and be prepared.
counterpart contractor information Prior to meeting with the contractor, I intend to think about the image I wish to convey and do some homework on projects and rates to better understand and maintain a positive relationship and leave a favorable impact.
opponent contractor information I would ask them to verify that the removing wall was indeed not load bearing and to explain how they got to this conclusion. I would also ask if the contractor intended to use sub contractors for the electrical and plumbing aspects.
opponent job information With the knowledge that members of Blue Bay already work from home, I would inquire about how many people do so, even if I already know the information. Based on the response, I would lead into the benefits of joining that existing work from home group.
partner antiques demeanor Explain the assumed value of the items and see if you can get them to increase the offer. If you lead with assumption that the coins have a higher value then the store offered, they may raise the offer.
opponent antiques dealterm I would sell the clock at the first antique shop as it was rated as the most valuable item. Then I would have the other items appraised elsewhere with the hope that they would be rated as more valuable.
partner tenant demeanor I would nicely explain that I am aware of my rights as a tenant and find the living situation unacceptable and unhealthy. If not corrected, the department of housing will be contacted.
counterpart contractor demeanor I would try to find a price that works for both of us and both hopefully that goes over well. I don’t want to go too low because they would be insulted.
counterpart car demeanor It would be best to show no emotion facially as if this was a game of poker. The salesman can see and react to my gauge as well as try to justify the prices they set so to counter therefore I must play the haggle game cooly and not show many reactions and perhaps go to different dealers to get the better deal.
counterpart job demeanor Being assertive about your skills that you would be bringing to the table and convey that you have background information collected about salary data for that position, flexibility to work from home in the company, and being open to discussion and negotiation, after listening to any other counter-offers the company may have.
opponent car dealterm I would have a set price for my trade-in, what I wanted for a payment contract, and be negotiable on the add-ons to get to me where I wanted to be. If that did not happen I would remind myself that this was not the only dealership around and cars are easily found.
counterpart job demeanor I would want to come off as sensible but not a push over. I would insist that they offer over the minimum market value and provide details about where I obtained the data from.
counterpart antiques information I would ask the antique trader the sorts of questions my friend has advised me to ask. I would also listen for the kind of things they might say about my antiques that imply more value than they are saying.
opponent car dealterm I would bring another person with me. I also would never accept the first offer.
opponent tenant dealterm I would just be very blunt with the landlord. Telling exactly what I want. And be honest about it. What? My choices were if I did not receive those requests from the landlord.

We also asked them what they thought of the advice they received. Here are their responses:

label sit_char adv_char thoughts
opponent tenant demeanor I thought the advice was a little bland, I would have preferred examples, etc. It also seems like common sense.
counterpart car dealterm I thought that it was good advice.
counterpart car dealterm I felt the advice helped to frame the decision in concrete, numeric terms. This is helpful when making a financial decision, especially a large one like a car purchase.
opponent antiques demeanor I thought the advice was generalized and useless.
partner car information I think the advice could have gone a little deeper into conversation.
opponent antiques demeanor I think it was okay but not very specific.
partner tenant information It was generic but helpful. I would probably provide more specific advice.
counterpart contractor demeanor It didn’t make sense and doesn’t help.
counterpart job information I think the advice was good because it made me more aware that the meeting was a negotiation. The advice would make me less transparent which is favorable to my side.
opponent tenant demeanor I think it is good advice. How you are perceived when you enter the negotiation can have an impact on the overall outcome.
opponent contractor demeanor The advice was extrememly broad and not directly related to hiring a contractor. I still would have had to research on my own, this advice was not great.
opponent car dealterm I thought the advice was helpful and easy to follow. I would use the advice in my overall negotiation process.
partner contractor demeanor I think it is very good advice.
counterpart antiques dealterm The advice gave a better idea on how to negotiate
counterpart antiques demeanor I think the advice was very helpful. It gave me confidence that the approach I had in mind was the right one.
partner contractor dealterm It was very general advice, and not very tailored to the exact situation. It was good advice though.
counterpart job demeanor I believe it was very good, important advice. You have to be prepared to not get everything you want, but know how to work them to get what you need.
counterpart job demeanor I think it could be some good advice to have because it makes you bold. I also am torn on if this technique would work or not in this situation.
opponent car dealterm It was good, but pretty obvious. I expected more from an expert negotiator
partner job dealterm It is helpful advice in framing my own needs and limits. Not all that helpful in the actual nuances of negotiating, however.
opponent antiques information Very informativ epiece of advice that could change my chances of winning the bargain. I’m glad the advice came through
counterpart tenant dealterm The advice was good and was what I would have done anyway.
opponent car information I don’t think the advice told me anything I didn’t already know from my experiences of negotiating what I wish to buy.
partner job information I thought the advice was too high-level, so it was difficult to think about how to actually apply them.
opponent car dealterm For someone who calls themselves an “expert” this seemed like the most basic, surface level advice they could have possibly given me
counterpart tenant information Honesty is always the best policy. The advice was good, not overly specific, but reassure my own thoughts and ideas.
opponent contractor demeanor I thought it was okay but not as applicable to civilian negotiations on price.
opponent job dealterm The advice seemed pretty general and didn’t take into account what I expected to be offered to begin with.
partner contractor demeanor It was okay advice, nothing new or groundbreaking
opponent antiques dealterm I thought it was pretty good, it covered important negotiation concepts about your walk-away number.
counterpart tenant information It’s not really my style, and may be useless because of the lease i signed.
partner car demeanor I think it could have went more in-depth about dealing with someone who is trying to sale you something. Pointing out what methods they use to get you to buy from them and what tactics you should look out for.
counterpart antiques information The advice given to prepare in advance for the negotiation by thinking carefully about the information to be shared and sought, and to prepare for a back-and-forth conversation with the counterpart, seems practical and useful for the given negotiation situation.
counterpart tenant information The advice was fine, but I wanted to be more aggressive in my negotiations.
opponent antiques information It seems realistic to try. You need to be comfortable to use the information received.
partner contractor dealterm approach the negotiation by setting a clear limit in mind and being prepared to walk away if the contractor’s offer falls below that limit. This can help the homeowner to have a successful negotiation
partner contractor dealterm I think the advice is very helpful in negatiations.
partner tenant information I think the suggestion is correct
partner job information I think it was not really connected to the problem.
partner contractor demeanor I think it was helpful. It was similar to something i would naturally think to do.
partner contractor demeanor I was happy to hear the advice. I trusted it and was ready to negotiate price.
opponent contractor information I thought it sounded like ok advice, but there wasn’t really anything specific I could follow
opponent contractor information I honestly don’t think the advice was helpful. It was very vague.
counterpart antiques information It was helpful in general, but did not help in the specific situation where my counterpart has much more information about the value of the items than I do.
counterpart job demeanor It was an “okay” advice. It wasn’t really specific
partner job information I think the advice is good. It mainly is about being mindful of the exchange while negotiating.
opponent antiques dealterm It is actually a good advice,so as not to be duped
counterpart tenant demeanor The advice was generic and non-specific. I didn’t find it very beneficial for advancing my negotiating ability.
partner car information I found it a little vague and broad.
counterpart job demeanor it is a good one if it works but it is unlikely with the personality of the HR
partner job dealterm IT WAS SOMEWHAT HELPFUL IN DEALING WITH THE TECHNICALITY OF THE ISSUE
counterpart tenant dealterm In the scenario, it says that my negotiator is an expert. If this is true than I trust them to advocate for me and give me the best advice.
partner tenant demeanor It was too lengthy and goes on about basic advice
partner car demeanor It was very blunt advise. It would’ve been a lot more help if they would have given a more direct answer
opponent car information I think it is a really good advice. Most people especially businesses are only interested in a deal that will favor them so i have to take the same approach.
counterpart antiques demeanor I thought it was good advice but rather general. I suspect the advice was meant to make me learn towards being more bold and direct, but I would not be good at that and it would probably show.
opponent contractor information I thought it gave me a helpful insight on how to prepare for a negotion with the contractor.
opponent tenant information I think it was good advice that should be taken however dealing with situations like these I already know how to handle these situations so the advice didn’t really make a difference to me.
partner tenant dealterm The advice is good, you want to have a plan/outcome when negotiating. Having an outcome in mind is beneficial in receiving what you want.
opponent contractor information I thought it was good advice. I trusted most of it and feel like it would work.
partner antiques demeanor I think the advice was a decent one.
counterpart job dealterm Probably consider the advice, weigh all the pros and cons, then decide whether to use or discard the received advice.
opponent antiques dealterm It was kind of generic and obvious.
counterpart car dealterm It made sense. I think if I walk away with something I’m happy with, I was successful.
counterpart car information To be blunt, it was spectacularly unhelpful.
opponent contractor demeanor The advice was very generalized and it would have been helpful to have some advice specific to this type of negotation
counterpart tenant demeanor It was pretty generic but somewhat helpful. If it were my friend, I would likely inquire on to further points they’d suggest (or have previously used in similar situations).
counterpart job information I think the advice would be helpful. I would use what I feel is helpful but keep in mind my end goal
opponent car information It really wan’t anything new or revelatory. The problem is, salespeople do this every day, all day long, and if you rarely negotiate, it’s hard to put what you know about negotiating into action.
counterpart contractor demeanor This advice lacked the specificity to be really helpful.
partner car demeanor I thought that the advice was vague and too general. It wasn’t really that helpful especially from a master negotiator nor was it specific to the situation.
opponent tenant information It was good advice. If I had not known it, I may have tried a different approach.
counterpart contractor dealterm I think any advice is good advice. One should always prepare themselves for any situation, especially negotiations.
opponent car demeanor The advice was kind of vague, and didn’t really give a strategy.
partner job demeanor The advice is good for some circumstances but it would be nice if it had more actionable examples within it.
counterpart car information I think the advice was in the middle and not straight forward.
partner car demeanor It is a good advice to follow. I will definately follow the advice.
counterpart antiques dealterm I though the advice was helpful. If it was related advice, it would reinforce the tactics earlier described.
partner contractor demeanor I think the advice was sound.
opponent contractor dealterm I think the advice was a little extreme but I understand where they are coming from
counterpart tenant information I thought the advice was too vague and unclear, especially if dealing with someone who sought out concise and clear answers.
partner job dealterm I would think it is worth a try as it sounds like it might work. The advice is what I was given by the person who helped me in the other situation
partner antiques dealterm I think this advice wasn’t that great and wasn’t specific to my situation. I believe that the advice was relatively generic and not exactly helpful.
opponent antiques information I thought the advice wasn’t specific enough or helpful.
counterpart job information I would plan my response for every statement they have to defense their first offer.
opponent tenant information I take the advice of others whom have experience in such things as very valuable. I try to use what I get, as long as it is still good advice.
opponent job information I thought it was very helpful, and it gave me insight into what my opponent was doing.
counterpart job information It was very vague and could be applied to any situation. It sounded made up.
counterpart job information I think it was too broad. If I were speaking to a friend with experience in this area, I would expect more detailed suggestions.
opponent car dealterm Good advice. Logical. Rather obvious.
counterpart tenant information I thought the advice was not very useful. The advice was generic advice I would use in any negotiation or unknown situation.
counterpart car dealterm I thought the advice was helpful and provided insight in to forming limits to allow me to know when to walk away.
partner car demeanor The advice wasn’t really all that specific. It was more just some general statements and guidance.
opponent contractor demeanor The advice was a little vague, I wish it was more specific and helpful especially for my cases
opponent antiques demeanor I thought it was good and comprehensive advice. It was rather typical, though - there was no silver bullet per se.
opponent job demeanor I believe the advice was rather vague and generalized
partner tenant dealterm I think the adbice was an eye openener and It was useful
partner antiques dealterm The advice was reasonable, I just personally am so uncomfortable with negotiations that I don’t know how much difference it would make for me.
counterpart contractor dealterm I thought it was good advice. You have to know your limits and what you are willing to accept.
partner antiques demeanor The advice was sound and helpful. I would have prefered more advice than given though.
opponent job dealterm The advice I was given was relevant and helpful.
partner antiques dealterm I thought the advice was good and that I should apply it.
partner car information I think the advice was very general. It helped, but not much.
partner car dealterm I think it was very sound. In anything regarding money, it’s always a good idea to go in knowing what you’re ok with, and it’s easy to forget.
partner antiques demeanor I didn’t feel like the advice was helpful, kinda vague. But it was kind of simple knowledge that most people would know off the bat, not very detailed to fit with the situation and it was impersonal.
counterpart tenant demeanor I thought it was good advice. It is important to make a good impression on the person you’re negotiating with so that they respect you and your demands.
counterpart job dealterm I thought it was good advice, keeping in mind it’s for my benefit and not for the counterpart.
counterpart tenant dealterm The advice was pretty “wordy” and kind of lacking details. I need more details and less intellectual words. Apparently we’re dealing with a slum lord
opponent tenant dealterm I don’t believe the advice was specific enough to be helpful.
partner job information I still would be somewhat uncertain on what to do.
counterpart tenant dealterm I think it is wise to go into a negotiation with the minimum I would settle for and for what I really would like and be prepared to argue for the most and negotiate the minimum.
partner contractor dealterm I thought it was ok, but kind of vague. There were not a lot of specifics.
counterpart car information The advice was good, but very general. I did not learn anything new from this advice.
partner tenant demeanor The advice was okay but I consider myself a good negotiator anyway.
opponent job information I think the advice would help me to negotiate effectively.
partner car dealterm It was good advice that I would of never thought about.
opponent tenant demeanor The advice was helpful because it can help me see another point of view about my problem and how to solve it
counterpart tenant information I think it is well thought out advice. It made sense to listen to the expert.
opponent antiques dealterm I thought that it was somewhat contentious, but that could be what negotiating is a big part of.
partner job demeanor I didn’t find the advice helpful.
partner job demeanor I think the advise was good for general advice. However, it was a bit vague and could have been more beneficial if examples were included.
counterpart contractor information The advise is so effective and helpful.
opponent contractor dealterm The advice was pretty effective. The advice came from a very experienced individual who’s one of the best in his business.
partner tenant information I appreciated the advice. I tried to use the advice.
opponent antiques demeanor The advice was something to go by when negotiating, but sometimes it doesn’t always work. I think I would take parts of the advice and use it with what I know.
counterpart contractor dealterm I think it was great advice. When you have those set limits in your mind, it is much easier to negotiate or walk away if needed.
opponent car information I don’t think the advice was that helpful because it did not give any examples, all it did was give you some questions to think about, some of which don’t really apply to a negotiation with a car dealership.
partner antiques information I thought the advice was helpful for someone who does not have any experience negotiating.
partner job dealterm The advice seems self explanatory. I have to stand up for me!
partner tenant demeanor the advise was very vague. real advise in this situation would have outlined common excuses a landlord might make and how to respond
opponent tenant dealterm I think the advice was too generic to be helpful for the specific situation. And while the advice is helpful for negotiating in general, its application would not be effective hear and is so general to the point of being common knowledge.
partner tenant dealterm I think it would be good to take it into advisement and make the best choice I could.
opponent tenant information The advice wasn’t immediately applicable to my situation. I had to make stretches to what I need to work out.
counterpart job demeanor I thought it was sort of vague. It didn’t feel like it was suggesting a strategy at all.
opponent contractor information I thought that the advice was sound and made was logical.
counterpart antiques information I didn’t think the advice was particularly insightful. Without knowing both parties or the specifics of the items, the advice was rather generic and not tailored to this transaction.
partner car information The advice seemed to be very basic. It did not cover anything in depth and just really only told me to negotiate.
opponent car demeanor It was vague without any specifics. It was primarily advice for me to project an image to the salesperson that would allegedly improve my chances of getting a better sales offer from them.
opponent job dealterm I think that this advice can be useful
counterpart antiques demeanor I think the advice is helpful, but I’d prefer more direct advice (where to go next and what to say).
counterpart contractor information i think that it doesnt give mw=e much info,
partner car dealterm It was pretty basic common sense.
opponent job demeanor It may re-enforce my thinking or cause me to reassess my strategy.
counterpart antiques dealterm I thought it was helpful in setting my expectations.
opponent car demeanor the advice was clear and informative but more specifics would have been helpful
counterpart contractor information I would feel as though the counterpart is here to help me and wants to make sure the job gets done correctly and at a fair price.
partner car dealterm The advice seems reasonable and could be helpful in negotiating with the car dealer. By having a clear understanding of your limits and being prepared to walk away, you are more likely to come to a mutually beneficial agreement with the dealer.
partner tenant dealterm I thought it was mediocre. It didn’t really provide much substantive help.
counterpart contractor demeanor I thought the advice was generally helpful but didn’t have specifics for this type of situation. Negotiating construction work has different risks from say a job offer and I felt the advice was too general.
counterpart car dealterm I thought the advice was helpful. It’s good to prepare a specific value in advance to be prepared. That seemed sensible.
partner contractor demeanor It’s pretty common advice for dealing with people and convincing them. Being on good terms with anyone generally makes them more agreeable, so of course it’d work in negotiation.
counterpart car information It was somewhat interesting and valuable. I listen and think about what I have heard and then proceed with caution and use my values to make a final judgement.
opponent tenant demeanor I feel like this suggestion is really hard to understand. I read it for like 3 minutes and could not get the essense of it. Sorry.
partner car dealterm I think it would be helpful. But I would also feel a little pressured by it.
counterpart antiques information The advice made sense, it gave some ideas on a strategy to use going forward.
counterpart antiques dealterm The advice was actionable, which I appreciate. I can formulate a plan based on it.
opponent tenant dealterm I think it was fairly solid advice but it also seemed super obvious to me. It was the very basic principals of negotiating.
partner tenant demeanor i will seek advice on how to go about the negotiation
opponent antiques information The advice was kind of broad and generic. I don’t think the advice was helpful that much.
opponent car information I think the advice is not actually harmful. However, it is what people would immediately think of when deciding how to negotiate.
counterpart tenant demeanor It was rather vague and not really helpful.
partner job information The advice was good, but very broad
partner antiques demeanor I thought it was helpful because it helped me be a better negotiator
opponent car information The advice was good, I have an idea of how to negotiate but I factored what they said in.
partner contractor demeanor It was weak advice. First off, the jargon you guys are using for this particular example is terrible. Pick a different scenario like salary negotiation.
opponent contractor demeanor I Think that the advice is useful in alot of situations and you don’t want to show weakness when negotiations .
counterpart tenant dealterm The advice was good. I need to know exactly what I am willing to live with.
counterpart tenant information It was a good theory, I’m sure, but vague on specifics for my situation.
partner job information It sounded canned and generic I would probably walk away thinking that didn’t help.
partner antiques dealterm It would help me to focus on what is important to me.
counterpart car dealterm I think it really helpful to be prepared.
partner tenant dealterm I thought the advice was good. It helped me think of a good bargain for myself and my landlord where we both could win.
opponent car demeanor The advice was somewhat helpful. but not as expected
counterpart antiques demeanor I thought the advice pretty worthless and generic.
partner tenant demeanor I don’t think it was the best advice, but I do think it helped a little. I believe making a good impression on my partner would get things started on the right track.
opponent job dealterm I think their advice was good. Although I would have been disappointed that I was being offered something lower than expected, I would need to consider what I could “live with” or if I need to walk away.
counterpart antiques demeanor I listened to the advice, then used the advice in my negotiations.
partner job dealterm The advice was preparing someone for success
opponent antiques demeanor It made sense. to be friendly and to make a nice impression is important in any bussines
partner job demeanor I believed the advice was good to know how come to the negotiation without being not ready.
opponent car information I think most peoples’ advice is biased because in the end, they’re not the ones directly affected by it.
partner tenant information I think it was reasonable advice.
counterpart contractor information The advice I got was somewhat informative. I would just need to think of what they would ask and how I would like to reply with them on what they are going to be doing
opponent car demeanor Relate to be effective negotiator
opponent car information It felt a little generic. It didn’t really seem all that helpful to me, to be honest.
partner job dealterm I felt that the advice was somewhat helpful, but a little bit vague in terms of strategy.
opponent contractor demeanor The advice was good in a generic way, fortunately i understand the topic well enough to f=ine tune it to my purposes. If I really did need construction done to my house I am sure I can get it done right and with a low cost.
partner contractor dealterm I felt like I needed more information. I would have asked for additional information.
counterpart job information It was somewhat helpful but vague.
counterpart job information I thought it was helpful, and very easy to understand. If i were negotiating i would definitely use that advice to help myself prepare my tactics.
counterpart job demeanor i thought it was very vague and not direct
counterpart contractor information I thought it was great advise. WIth out it, I don’t think I would have held back saying anything to the contractor.
counterpart car demeanor I thought the advice was somewhat helpful, but it was a bit too open ended for me; I would have preferred more concrete advice of the best approach to take to ensure a positive outcome. The advice left a lot of room for interpretation, and if I chose the wrong impression that I wanted to convey, it could lead to a very different outcome than the one I wanted.
opponent job dealterm I think it was solid advice. Keeping our limits in mind helps to make better decisions for ourselves.
partner antiques demeanor Advise is exactly what it is, advise. I can be successful whether I follow it or not.
opponent car information It felt really broad. I still didn’t really know what to do even after receiving it.
partner job information I think it was a little too vague for the situation.
counterpart tenant dealterm I think it’s good advice to always think of the worse outcome so that you can always be prepared
partner job information The advice was generic and basic. Specific advice would have been much more useful.
opponent car dealterm I think the advice was very helpful.
counterpart car dealterm Good idea to have a plan to stick with going in to wheel and deal, they know what they’re doing and you need to too.
opponent job dealterm I felt it was helpful advice. In my opinion, it’s best to establish with yourself where you absolutely draw the line, and stick to it. Otherwise, you face the potential of agreeing to something you’re not actually on board with.
opponent contractor dealterm I think the advice was just ok. It could have been more specific.
counterpart tenant information The advice I received is extremely useful as it provided me with all the information I needed about the other party.
opponent contractor dealterm With advice and research, i would have a better chance of negotiating.
partner tenant demeanor It wasn’t great. I don’t know if the landlord is temperamental or not. If they are, they won’t care about negotiation.
opponent contractor information The advice was very vague and not incredibly helpful.
counterpart tenant dealterm The advice was very vague and general not really helpful.
counterpart antiques dealterm I thought in terms of working a bargain like that, it didn’t seem overly helpful.

partner antiques dealterm It reminded me to stay mindful.
partner car dealterm It was nothing out of the ordinary. Exactly what I would have done on my own anyway.
counterpart contractor demeanor it was helpful and enlightening
counterpart car information I think the advice was perfect. Negotiation in many ways is the art of being careful with shared information.
opponent tenant demeanor The advice was good. I had never thought about how I want to come across in a negotiation, only the desired end result of a negotiation.
counterpart antiques information I don’t think this advise was new or super useful, but it is definitely good stuff to know / review
counterpart contractor demeanor It was helpful but a bit more vague than I would have liked.
partner antiques information I thought it was kind of vague and didn’t really expand upon much. A lot of it was common sense,
opponent job information I don’t think the advice was specific enough, and I didn’t have a exact plan based on the advice alone.
opponent contractor demeanor I don’t feel as though the advice would have changed my goals which were to explain what I want and what I don’t want to happen.
opponent job dealterm I thought it was very sound advice. I would definitely follow through on this advice
opponent job information I think the related advice was sound and a good way to prepare for the negotiation.
partner tenant information Be prepared to not receive what is being sought and have a plan B. Know what laws protect you.
opponent job dealterm I think it was sound and reasonable.
partner antiques information I think the advice will help me negotiate an outcome in my favor. I would follow my friend’s advice.
opponent tenant demeanor I think the advice was reasonable, but far too general.
opponent contractor dealterm I didn’t think it was too off base to be honest. I would try and low ball the contractor.
counterpart contractor demeanor It was good advice and put me in the right frame of mind.
counterpart car dealterm The advise was particularly beneficial as it gave me insight into the dealer.
partner car information I think the advice is solid, if a little vague. It’s always good to take the time to articulate your priorities to yourself and to consider the position(s) and likely objections of your opponent or counterpart.
partner tenant demeanor The advice is satisfactory. The approach was nice and friendly and the advice will be of benefit to both the landlord and the tenant
opponent tenant information I thought it was extremely vague and unhelpful. Anyone would be able to provide that level of advice.
partner antiques dealterm The advice makes sense, I guess, but I would expect more from someone that called themselves an expert negotiator. It did make me think more on the negotiation itself, which is something I’m not very good at to begin with.
counterpart car dealterm It wasn’t bad. The best part was reminding that you can walk away. I know a lot of people who struggle with that issue.
opponent job information I thought it was basically good, but seemed adversarial in tone and was generic.
counterpart job dealterm WELL, IT WAS A VERY GOOD ADVICE AND I HEED STRICTLY TO IT
opponent tenant demeanor I think the advice was somewhat generic. I probably could have found the same advice online
partner antiques demeanor Doesn’t seem like very useful advice to any ordinary person. Hopefully most people would already know that the impression they convey is important.
counterpart job information I think the advice was good.I would really take their advice.
opponent tenant information I thought the advice was kind of vague. The negotiator could’ve gone into specifics like maybe precedents, tenant laws, something like that.
counterpart antiques demeanor I thought it was helpful, and it was useful information to use when negotiating.
counterpart contractor demeanor I think the advice is helpful, especially from someone with expertise in it. I would welcome the advice.
partner contractor information I think it was pretty clear and helpful. I have seen some people appear a little clueless, leading to higher quotes.
opponent car demeanor Honestly I don’t think it was as helpful as the person thought it was.
partner contractor dealterm The advice was fairly common sense and perhaps a little helpful. It pretty much confirmed my own thoughts about how to proceed.
counterpart car dealterm I believe the advice was spot on and correct.
counterpart job information I found the advice to be valuable as it covered everything I needed to know about the hiring manager.
partner antiques dealterm The advice seemed fine but wasn’t particularly helpful or unhelpful

counterpart contractor demeanor Advise was somewhat generic but could apply the principles of the advise to try and get an upper hand.
partner tenant dealterm It is sound advice that seems to be as unbiased as possible.
partner contractor demeanor The advice was very open ended, but would be effective advice in this situation
partner antiques demeanor I thought the advice was pretty generic in that it basically said oh think long and hard how you want to come across to this person. I would’ve expected more specifics, like ask for 25% more than you’re actually willing to settle for.
opponent job demeanor It was super vague and unhelpful.
opponent antiques information I think that the advice was really vague. I would have appreciated some examples on how to implement said advice.
opponent tenant information I think the advice was nice to have
partner job information I thought the advise was fairly good and to the point and gave me something to think about.
partner tenant information I wish it had focused more on what to actually say
opponent contractor dealterm I don’t think the advice was too realistic. Usually stuff in this field is pretty straight forward.
partner car dealterm I think it is good advice to go into a negotiation with an idea in mind of what your bottom line is, or the worst deal you would accept. It’s good advice because you know when you need to walk away.
partner tenant information I didn’t really find the advice helpful because he didn’t tell me specifically what to do.
opponent job demeanor I thought it was pretty generic and obvious. I would be asking for more specific tips.
counterpart car demeanor It was a little vague, but gave me a starting place to think about what I needed to do.
counterpart car demeanor It was good advice but rather vague. Some examples of the situations would have been more helpful.
opponent job information it is a good advice that everyone should take into practice
opponent job dealterm I received new advice or is this a reference to the advice from the friend of my friend? Assuming it relates to the advice I have already received, it is good advice as it relies on goalposts set in rationale rather than making an emotional situation in the room.
partner contractor dealterm It was appropriate because remodeling isn’t cheap and it’s something you have for a while.
partner contractor dealterm I thought the advice was helpful but pretty basic. It seems natural to have an upper limit when negotiating on a price.
partner job dealterm I thought the advice was good and concise. A little direction without giving me exactly what to say and how to act.
counterpart antiques demeanor It’s a lot better than nothing. But it’s not that helpful to someone like me.
partner contractor demeanor The associated advice proved to be very beneficial as it enlightened me on the contractor.
opponent antiques dealterm It was fine advice but far from complete. You should definitely have a floor in mind since getting rid of the objects is the ultimate goal.
partner car dealterm I think it’s great advice, and something I’d definitely use.
opponent antiques dealterm I thought the advice was thought out. And I found it a bit helpful.
opponent job demeanor It was very generic advice. Of course you always want to remember that when you are dealing with someone, that their impression of you is important.
counterpart job demeanor I thought the advice was kind of vague.
opponent antiques dealterm It was ok, I would still go to the other place.
partner contractor information It provided me with more things to think about. I would have a better approach.
counterpart tenant demeanor I did not entierly agree with the advice though I do understand how it could be effective in some cases. I don’t think the advice was agressive enough for this situation.
opponent contractor demeanor I thought it was good advice, but the only way you can get good at negotiating is practicing.
counterpart antiques demeanor It was about how to act - where if I were in the situation, I’d do more research to increase my knowledge.
partner job demeanor I feel like advice is helpful to the person giving it, not receiving it.
counterpart contractor information It was ok, didnt give to much information just about making a plan and prepare for alot of back and forth.
partner job dealterm The advice is what I would have done.
counterpart tenant information I thought it was generic advice that was more or less common sense. The real skill in negotiation comes down to execution more than anything.
opponent job demeanor I think the advice is a bit aggressive and lacked transparancey.
counterpart contractor dealterm It seemed fair and good advice.
partner tenant demeanor Start bold but not over stepping or angry. Include demands on how to fix the problem, not demands that subjectively selfish.
opponent job information I think it was good but it could have been better and maybe more specific.
opponent car information The advise is good in general. I would appreciate some more specifics on how to tailor my interaction for the best negotiation outcome.
opponent car dealterm It was relevant, but not enough advice was given. I know enough to establish my limits, but not necessarily what approach I should take when talking to the salesperson.
counterpart tenant information i think in this aspect you are totally in the right. you need a safe home and the landlord is responsible for the damage
partner tenant dealterm The advice seemed helpful since it made me think ahead of what I would negotiate for.
opponent contractor dealterm The advice I received was useful. It served it purpose.
counterpart contractor demeanor it was good but not anything new.
opponent antiques information It would be helpful in this situation
opponent car dealterm I thought the advice was a helpful reminder to set financial boundaries and know when to walk away instead of trying to make it work.
partner car dealterm It is a phenomenal advice that everyone negotiating needs
opponent car information I think it was sound advice and better than anything I would do without knowledge.
counterpart car dealterm The advice was good. I’ve found that one of the most common ways to have a deal go sideways is to get caught up in details that are not pertinent to an overall goal.
partner contractor demeanor The advice was general negotiation tactics, but not related directly to this case, which is somewhat unhelpful.
partner antiques dealterm I thought it was very useful. If you have a number in mind, then no matter what a person says, you have a limit.
opponent antiques information I think the advice was mostly common sense but it was still good to read anyway.
counterpart contractor information I thought it was pretty good advice.
opponent contractor information It was alright but i probably wouldn’t use it. I don’t understand why you would negotiate a contractors work.
counterpart job information I think it is very helpful to know and then cultivate that advice to your best leverage
counterpart job dealterm The advice didn’t help me to know how to advocate for myself, but it did help me understand when to walk away from a bad deal.
partner antiques demeanor I felt that the advice could have been a little more detailed and instructive.
counterpart antiques information To think hard about what the antique seller might do or want, be careful with the infomation I shared. Really generic stuff that sounds nice but not particularly useful without specific ideas.
partner car information Through some of it was a bit vague, it was largely helpful and easy to implement advice.
partner car demeanor The advice was very good and it was an eye opener. It would definitely help more than expected.
opponent tenant dealterm Generally sound. But not sure if it’s going to work in this case.
counterpart contractor information I thought it was really generalized and didn’t necessarily help or hurt in bargaining with a contractor. Contract work negotiations are so variable because there are so many external costs and influences at play. So the advice wasn’t too helpful in navigating that part.
