Big 5 Personality Theory

The “Big 5” Personality theory has been one of the most influential ideas in Personality Psychology.

  • Originally developed by Ernest Tupes and Raymond Christal (1961)
  • Also called the “Five Factor Model”
  • Posits that personality can be thought of as a combination of five distinct and uncorrelated personality factors.

Big 5 Personality Theory: Factors

  • Openness
  • Conscientiousness
  • Extraversion
  • Agreeableness
  • Neuroticism

Big 5 Personality Theory: Neuroticism

The calculator is based on the Neuroticism subscale of the Big Five Inventory (Goldberg, 1992).

  • Neuroticism is a personality trait typified by “anxiety, fear, moodiness, worry, envy, frustration, jealousy, and loneliness” (Thompson, 2008).
  • Ten quantitative survey questions reveal a “neuroticism” score.
  • For example, the following 10 scores would lead to the following score (which is in the “average” range):
3 + 4 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 3 + 3
[1] 27

Take the survey yourself!

Answer the 10 questions and determine whether you score in the “high,” “average,” or “low” ranges.

  • Low score: Less than 15
  • Average score: 15-30
  • High score: >30
