When did people have their best lap?
Helps us to know, do the winners tend to have their best lap early or later in the race?
- 3/5 of the best laps overall in the race were on the first lap, which is indicative of how these races start.
- Some folks had their fasted lap on 1 and then ended up with low finishes (red shading), these are the “poppers”.
- The winner had his fastest lap on lap 2. It was also the fastest lap of the race. So he pushed it on the second lap as everyone else was easing up after their fast first lap.
Did the best laps also have the best average times?
Here we take a look and see how everyone's best lap compares to their average lap time.
The blue line in the chart below represents what one's average time would be if you rode all your laps equally fast (that is, your best and average lap are equal). The interesting thing to look at here is the horizontal distance from the points to the blue line. The further away you are, the greater the difference between your best and average lap times.
- Here we can see some outliers. These are people who either cracked hard, or had a mechanical (or both).
- Again we see the overall winner stands out for having the best single lap too.
How much faster would everyone have gone if they did nothing but best laps?
This is a rotation of the graph above, where the blue line has been made parallel to the X-axis. So it shows how many seconds difference there are between each riders' best lap and average lap.
- Strong riders ride ALL strong laps.
- The old-faithful award would go to the guy closest to zero.
- Here our winner actually looks less superhuman, although he rode the best lap in the race, his average lap was about 15 seconds slower than that lap.
